Tortuga Inspired Buildings, Finished & WIP

I just love the Tortuga city and so I started building my own. Although you might note there are no rafters sticking out on the outside of them. I just figgured that they'd get knocked off only too soon and make it look used too fast.
The walls are made from foamcore with a little skim of plaster to give texture. The paper backing was ripped off in places to carve exposed bricks.
I went a bit overboard building doll house furniture for it.
Of course the Church of Mannan has to be the focal point.

Next comes the Port Authority building. Office in the front, bed in the back, who knows upstairs. Renters I think. No kitchen though, I think they eat a lot of take out.

I opened this thread and was like 'DAMN!! That's some real impressive scenery right there!!'then I saw the interiors and just started to drool and mamble incoherently!! Those peices are insanely good, and if the other stuff is 'only' half as good it will be one of the most stunning tables I've ever seen!!

That is some damn fine work. You should do stuff like that on commission. I'm very impressed

To cianty---That is exactly the game board I was copying the buildings from.
I love that Tortuga board too.
I have only these 3 buildings done for now.
I have a few more Ghost Pirates to paint and then I plan to work on my 4th building.

Great job on copying them! It's an awesome table and I was very impressed the two times I saw it in action at the Tactica.

I look forward to your next building! With all the detail you put inside them you have a great way of personalizing them and making them your own instead of mere copies.

Some red and yellow paint, a few skulls, some barbed wire and ya got the makins' of an Orky type outpost

Love the detail! This is one of the best pirate terrains I've ever seen. My only SMALL complaint would be that it looks a little bit too clean, since Tortuga was a pirate hideout that also housed 1.650 prostitutes (thank you Wikipedia).

I wish I were I criminal... so I could find out where you live and steal the terrain. AWESOME!

And there you have it. That is my main failing.

I agree that they are too clean looking. But, I don't have any artistic flair in that area and I couldn't figgure out how to do it without taking a chance on ruining the buildings.
I can't blend colors in any kind of splotchy, random way and make it come out good.

Although I am not an engineer, my mind works like one. Straight edges and all. Not at all artistic.
Suggestions are welcome.

Which is unusual that my first army was 40K Orks.

I will give you a secret... THE secret on how to get 'over' the fear of ruining a model.

Paint something for sale.

Decide to make a building for sale (here, in Games2Trains, in eBay, etc.) Then build and paint... do CRAZY things that you would never do for your buildings. Try weathering or washing some areas. Make it 'dirty'... go NUTS! Always remembering 'Hell... it's not for me! Someone, somewhere will like it and buy it!'

The end result? You will like the end result so much that you will end up kick yourself for selling it!

This is how I learned new techniques... before I was horrified of painting eyes, gems and drybrushing a 'finished' model. I though that gems were the hardest thing to pull off... now I thing is just 'simple' routine. I'm not bragging... I still have a long way. But any time I see a new technique, I just grab a model and paint something for a friend or for sale.

Trust me, once you paint 'without fear' the true artist comes out. You will be amazed. Then you will hate yourself... all those years painting and you could have done better! Stupid subconscious self-restraint!
