With the fury of the death of Happy still coursing through their veins, the Underminers thundered down alleys and streets that lesser bands would have baulked at walking down.
As they emerged into an open square an arrow pinged off Doc's impressive belt buckle and a second thudded into a doorframe next to Grumpy. "Right lads, I've had about enough of this... HAVE 'EM!"
Right across the square the beleaguered dwarfs moved from cover to cover or hunkered down behind crumbled walls and took up aim. Sleepy the remaining slayer, as always, charged forwards but before he could reach a foe, a strange masked, fishy smelling figure stepped out of a doorway and unleashed a storm of shrapnel and smoke.
On the opposite side of the square, bow fire was being exchanged between two dark window openings and the street below where the young thunderer, Mori, had crouched behind some rubble with his crossbow stock resting on the masonry.
When the smoke had cleared from the blunderbuss discharge the naturally-inclined-to-line-up-and-march Underminers had three spluttering but unharmed warriors.
A wardog came from nowhere and leapt at Doc whilst Sleepy moved in behind a wall away from the arrows that had started to find their range.
Meanwhile the two young beardlings had crept up on their enemy and prepared to charge when he stepped from the shadows and launched a flurry of small knives felling the first henchman and sending the second scuttling for cover. Curses.
However, 3 of the witchhunters (for after the skirmish, the abandoned weapons and ragged clothing of the fallen gave them away as such) lay still, and with the determined dwarfs closing in, the call to fall back was given.
The battle for the farms had finished with the dwarfs remaining in control. The upped sticks from Soup Alley and dug in. The warm fire and beer barrels in the farmstead were too important to give up!

| WEEK 8 RESULTSWith appologies for the delay, here are last week's results (without Richard's updated warband rating, obviously... ): IF YOU'RE INTERESTED... The most fought-over locations are still Hangman's Square and The Boarding Party Inn. The most successful warband is still The Lost Waaagh!band with a 71% win rate. The estimated campaign result is now a win for Raziel's Court or The Lost Waaagh!band. Mark, Nick and Richard - I'm afraid your territories have become uncontrolled, but please feel free to come and retake them! | |

Zelophahad was away at a conference for a week (so we couldn't get into the Mill), then I was away on annual leave for a week. I'm back in action now - I played a game against Raziel's Court (Davespaceman's Vampire warband) in Cathay Town yesterday: Report and photos on the way!

| Take Away of the Dead8th March the year of the Metal Tiger, Wyrdstone Hunt in Cathay Town Both the Gloomwyrms and Raziel’s Court attacked the recently vacated Cathay Town. ± Two Wyrdstone shards glittered in the rubble outside the ruined tower. The eastern Orc Pirates and the shambling horde of former-heroes both headed straight for them. Yu-Dan cast Cloud Trapeze and leapt over the old Chapel, as he sailed through the air he spotted Raziel the Vampire lurking just below the building. He crashed head long into the Ghoul-King, sword and dagger glittering in the sunlight. Two slashes opened gushing wounds in the Vampire then a thrust pieced his chest! The Vampire howled and slumped to the ground. Yu-Dan twirled his blades with a slightly showy flourish and looked around the street – just in time to see two Ghouls and a rotten Ogre barreling towards him… Pig-Xi and Bo-Sun clambered up a ladder into a low tower, crossbows at the ready to rain death upon the heads of the rotting masses. Li-Ping and the (possibly) re-incarnated Mung-Qi, known as Yung-Qi jogged forward and but were met with more former-Vercuso-explorers who made short work of the Orcy pair. Droo-Ling the Troll bellowed a challenge at the great rotting hulk of an Ogre. The Ogre crashed into the Troll, smashing the scaly blue beast about the head with his club. The Troll’s wounds rapidly knitted themselves back together and he looked at the Ogre with an evil glint in his eye. With an unexpectedly swift piece of sword-work Droo-Ling felled the Ogre and impaled the brute where he lay! Tricky Tarka the Orc Shaman looked around at the onrushing swarm of zombies and the rapidly diminishing number of greenskins and he called it a day. The eastern Pirates once more fled Cathay Town, much to their annoyance and frustration. ±

| WEEK 9 RESULTSThis week's results (without guess-who's updated warband rating...): IF YOU'RE INTERESTED... The most fought-over locations are still Hangman's Square and The Boarding Party Inn. Vercuso Bridge is now the only location yet to see action - so someone go and attack Andy there! The most successful warband is still The Lost Waaagh!band but their win rate has dropped to 65% now. Raziel's Court has moved up to second place with 54%. The estimated campaign result is now a clear win for Raziel's Court, although it will still depend on the dice... The seemingly indestructible Raziel is most definitely in ascendency in Vercuso. Will we stand for this, or gather our courage and banish his foul presence from our streets...? | |

"Treasure lads. It's what we're here for, now are we gonna let this opportunity pass us by?" "N-" "It was a rhetorical question lad. Of course we're gonna go grab it!"
The quarter of the city squatted before the dwarfs, promising much excitement and much risk - like one of those filthy women of the night in the nearby docks area, mused Grumpy Gurnarsson. The buildings formed a confused jumble of sneak throughs and alleys with a lattice of walkways and bridging ladders overhead. The only clearing was before the prison tower, around the shell of a building exposing a basement entrance and ruined furniture.
As the Underminers hurried forward, two groups of shaggy orcs emerged from the shadows and swarmed forwards, spitting out stones from their primitive slings. Green glowing tendrils sprang from behind the prison tower and tried to reach forward to envelop the East Tunnellers but couldn't stretch far enough.
As the orcs moved from building to building the dwarfs surrounded the open ruins and prepared to fight off the horde. Their superior treasure hunting senses told them the find was beneath their feet and no stinking orcs were going to take it from them.
Crossbow bolts and pistol cracks whittled the orc numbers down some but there were enough of the greenskins to close the gap and hurl themselves into combat.
Gurnarsson, the Propshafts, the Canaries and both troll slayers fell under a hurricane of orc attacks, but unsighted the West Tunnellers had finally grabbed the chest of loot and were legging it.
The orc leader had fallen, the ragtag followers had taken grievous wounds and the shaman's orcy juice had run dry - the remnants of the warband fell back, giving up on the shiny trinkets and leaving the dwarfs the spoils.
Some time later, as the savage boss awoke, a rough, strong hand grabbed at his pelt and dragged him towards a gate with daylight streaming in, "You, ya beast, are gonna fight. Into tha pits with ya...!"

| The Green Mile15th March the year of the Metal Tiger, Wyrdstone Hunt at Slippery Jack’ Cave The Orcs clashed on the waterfront once more; looting and bloody murder ensued. Mr Book was on hand to bear witness and lend a silver arrow or two. ± While the rest of the Gloomwyrms rushed forward, hoping to get to the four crates of loot before the frothing Cave Orcs, Yu-Dan lurked under the arches of the Wall Tavern. From the gloom beneath the building he peered out at the noisy and rapidly advancing Savages. Pig-Xi, Bo-Sun and Pa-Lai fired off a steady stream of crossbow bolts and once Tricky Tarka had coaxed Droo-Ling the Troll into sight of the enemy he added to their barrage with a magical firestorm. Li-Ping cast Cloud Trapeze and somersaulted up into the attic of the Inn, landing lightly next to a bag of coins. Kang the Goblin, of The Flying Daggers, grabbed another bag of plunder and legged it. Yu-Dan leapt out of the shadows and flew into the line of Cave Orcs, jeweled sword and dagger flashing in the sun. His precisely aimed cuts and thrusts felled the hulking Orc before him and he turned to the next Cave Orc with a confident flourish. Unfortunately for him it was Uhg-ug-ugg, the Savage Orc Boss. The prehistoric persecutor brought down a massive stone two-handed club on Yu-Dan’s straw hat and caved-in his heavily scared head. The Hero of the East collapsed like a rag doll and lay motionless on the cobbles. After Yu-dan died the rest of the Gloomwyrms threw themselves at the enemy in a fury and brought down half a dozen of the Cave Orcs, who broke and ran. ± | |

So it's safe to say it had been a while, since the farmers had seen some action, And now it was time to venture out, and find some interaction, They spied a prince who'd lost his way, all plump and strange and short, Although he didn't seem like a prince at all, more like a halfling of a sort,
He waddled here and pottered there, and walked in staggered rings, Surrounded by a hoard of monsters, and devils and rats and things, Not once did this stumpy fellow, show any signs of fear, In fact he just regarded, things as rather queer,
That was until an ogre, all rotten and dead and smelly, Grabbed him by his collar, and stuffed him in his belly, And whatever they would do to him, it probably wouldn't be pretty, But our farmers didn't care about, all that pointless nitty-gritty,
For their enemies were in front of them, in the form of some overgrown mice, And spilling their guts over the cobbles, would feel rather nice, But our shaman tried to cast a spell, that he'd given a lot of study, But whenever he seemed to try it, his nose just got all bloody,
The air would start to shimmer, and the clouds would start to roil, And the water in the sewer grates, would really start to boil, But the spell would never seem to work, like many of his tricks, Because whenever he rolled his two dice, he couldn't get a six,

| The Jingle Book16th March the year of the Metal Tiger, Hidden Treasure at Vercuso Ferry In a smoky tavern back room, bedecked in tatty red silk wall-hangings and paper lanterns, the Gloomwyrms sat round low tables drinking rice wine and chatted animatedly. Helving Book sat among them looking somewhat lost and bemused. The Cathayan Orc had lost two of their warband, including the legendary Yu-Dan, but they didn’t seem demoralised in the slightest. They were planning a trip on the Vercuso Ferry to the Ropewalks. Given that Papa Jingle's Cirque du Extraordinaire held the Ferry and the pirates had an antagonistic history with them, is wasn’t going to be a quiet trip. It would probably require the removal of the Circus from the Ferry station before the Orcs would be allowed to board. ± Pig-Xi and Bo-Sun took up positions under the cover of the ruined battlements, crossbows at the ready. The rest of the Orc Pirates rushed forwards in two large groups as the Circus was busy searching the ruins: The bandsmen set up a perimeter around the Cultist’s House (where they suspected a stash of gold and gems was hidden) and Papa Jingle took aim at the Gloomwyrms with his Hockland Long Rifle. The circus performers quickly rummaged around in each of the surrounding buildings to make sure they weren’t mistaken before they kicked in the door of the Cultist’s House and dragged out the heavy sea-chest. Mr Book’s silver arrows (for once) made an impression and three members of the circus troupe went down with grievous wounds from the magical projectiles, including a certain red-coated Ringmaster! Pig-Xi and Bo-Sun both claimed hits on the junior members of the circus, Tricky Tarka conflagrated another in the Flames of Gork. As the band dragged the chest clear the Gloomwyrms were left in possession of the Vercuso Ferry. The newest pirate (who looked a lot like the late Yu-Dan) was the most vocal in his celebration and taunting. ± “You can have him back for 50 gold crowns!” Tricky Tarka shouted over the dark harbour waters to the listening circus troupe. When the echoing reply came back accepting the demands a little too quickly the Shaman cursed himself for not asking for more. ± | |

Crossbow bolts flew through the air thudding into huge muscles or more often into the ground, doorposts and walkways but still the heathens came on.
Gurnarsson paced calmly up the street alternating his shots left and right as Doc, behind him atop the gallows platform, spewed out crossbow fire. The barbarians were made of tough stuff though and not nearly enough bodies were falling.
The two troll slayers, revelling in the delight of combat, received the charge and deftly parried blows before the weight of numbers became too much even for their fury and they fell.
Mori, his beady eye trained on a particulalry large barbarian, didn't see the second big brute coming in from his left till too late, and even though handy with a sword, he couldn't protect himself and he too slumped under a shield barge.
The dwarfs bristled with indignant rage at being robbed of treasure after the encounter. Questions about Grumpy's leadership were asked as yet again the dwarfs routed with victory in sight. Yes folks, the warband with the highest starting and highest average Ld in Vercuso has yet again failed another rout test. When will this perverse statistics-buggering end?

For some strange reason The Capstan has lain deserted for the last week or so, apparently avoilded by even the bravest and most gung-ho of Vercuso's residents. No one is yet sure why, but no one wants to get too close to find out why... The Capstan will not be available as a location to fight in until the final battle of the campaign, when it will be worth double points (it's currently uncontrolled). I'm hopeful we can arrange the traditional end-of-campaign multiplayer evening game probably on Tuesday 30th March, if not Thursday 1st April...
