| COOL STUFF! The Chieftain ROCKS! I LOVE the way you did the scabbard. The casual pose is right on; i.e., it implies power. Nice choice of colors. The Condemned looks VERY promising; definitely the stuff nightmares are made of. WELL DONE & KEEP'EM COMING! | |

| Great work, Cat! I like them a lot! The Chief has a lot of character, his pose is really great. The paint job is very well done also. A big from me. I look forward to adding them to the BTB gallery once they're done. | |

| Nice, Catferret! The Chieftan model is great, and the condemned is off to a brilliant start too. That greenstuff work is amazing! Can't wait to see more of this warband... | |

| Aaaah, Cat Thanks for posting those! Your Jarl is REALLY cool. Actually, I nominated him for a medal (won't say witch one, you'll have to go check) at Golden Tom #1. Unfortunately the other judges don't know awesomeness when they see it I love the helmet under the arm. Excellent idea. He looks like a perfect Viking. Great mini! I'm counting on you for GT#2! [EDIT]: There is one thing you may be able to imporve though... and that's the base. It could look a little more intersting... * makes mental note for new basing tutorial* _________________ | |

| Cianty's right (of course! ) - the Jarl is excellent, in a wonderfully understated way. It's the small details, like the helmet under the arm and the throwing axe in his belt - that all add up to a wonderful mini. Great stuff. In fact - WE WANT MORE! And by 'Cianty', I mean 'Admin Tom', of course

Ey! As a proud medal winner I'm not sure I like this comment. Pretty sure I dont. Here is a frank and specific discussion of this wonderful model from the point of view of someone who has judged many contests at the local, internet, national and international level. Dont get me wrong - I REALLY like this model, but I am providing detailed frank critique of what I see here in order to help catferret and any others who are interested in raising their personal painting bar by giving a bit of insight into what a judge may see in such a model. I have put it as a spoiler so if you are thin skinned or unprepared to respect this constructive critique for what it is read no further. - Spoiler:
So this figure is really nice and it looks like your Marauder inspired guy is going to be great too - likely even better than the first one. I especially appreciate that your chaimail sculpting is really well handled and your putty is very smooth! The paint style you have, on the other hand is a very blocked out and layered approach which looks great on a model - but for up close pictures and painting contest pieces really ought to be carefully feathered around the edges to create transitions of colour - or at least the illusion thereof between your layers OR alternately should be clearly dilineated between colour layers to further emphasise this as a stylistic choice. This inconsistancy is especially evident on the top right hand pic in the area around the elbow/arm muscles. These same comments could be applied to the blue sections of cloth which - in the picture here - look less smooth than the rest of the model. THe upper leg of the pant in pics 1 and 2 look as though they havent been shadowed or shaded. The fur looks nice and soft which is a great plus, but it lacks the contrast and level of lighting evident in the surrounding areas . And it looks as though your grey loincloth fur in pic1 (top left) looks as though your wash either missed or didnt take to the right hand side of the loincloth (or you over brushed it all the way out to grey there - i cant tell which from the pic though id guess it was the former) as it looks solid grey without any emphasis to the depth of the fur texture. Your metals look excellent though again there appears to be more contrast ond tonal range (by virtue of your washes) in the axeheads than in the helmet though that could clearly be a result of the lighting and the photo. I also have to agree on the base - it doesnt detract from your model - which is good - but it doesnt really add anyting to the composition or the concept - even just a couple of patches of snow, grass, snowygrass, something to break up the visual deadzone would be to your advantage here Consistancy is the step forward - it looks as though you have the tools/skills/knowhow to do an amazing job - but the lack of consistancy and attention to detail brings it just down to a great job. A great job means you model will be better than almost anything your opponent puts on the table and will give you a fair shot at some competitions, but isnt going to dominate your painting competiion opposition
I hope you found this useful and informative - id be happy to do the same for anyone on this forum just post clear pics (like the ones above) and ask (though these take a while to write so I dont guarantee instant turnaround!)

| Thanks for the comments guys. Updates in this thread will be sporadic so don't expect more pics anytime soon. Yeah, the base is very plain. It will be getting replaced when I do the rest of the warband. tkkultist: I understand why I didn't win, and quite honestly didn't expect to. The models that took the top 3 places were very deserving of their awards. I've never had the patience for more advanced painting techniques like blending, I just aim for something that stands out from the more common tabletop look. I only enter Golden Demon to get in to the event an hour early. EDIT: Guess I should post my planned roster as well. Seems to be the done thing. Chieftain (Tolbjorn Stormwalker): 95 Sword: 10 Axe: 5 Helmet: 10 Total: 120 Shaman (Haukr): 45 Mark of Tchar: 0 Staff: 3 Total: 48 Champion (Agmundr): 45 Sword: 10 Total: 55 Champion (Dagfynnr): 45 2-handed Axe: 15 Total: 60 Condemned (Asgautr): 55 Marauder (Bjarngeir): 35 Throwing Axes: 15 Axe: 5 Total: 55 Marauder (Alfgeirr): 35 Mace: 3 Total: 38 Marauder (Gunnleifr): 35 Mace: 3 Total: 38 2 Warhounds (Ulfgar, Refkell): 30 Warband Total: 499 | |

| LOL - as good of a reason to enter as any that I know of! That being said - I want to say once again that your techniques are good and your models will probably look better on the table than just about anyone you ever play against, but that I hoped that I could share a little insight on judging mindsets for those who are interested on how such calls are made for contests and to provide some constructive critique - I have already had additional requests from others here on the forum for the same thing so I guess I made at least some semblance of sense Looking forward to seeing more - especially how you approach the shaman concept. | Yeah, I appreciate the post you made but it's just all things I've been told before I'm afraid. I have friends who judge painting competitions so I know all the requirements. I just do my own thing. The shaman is something I'm still deciding on. One idea was the fully robed, hunched over kind of guy. A bit like a LotR Nazgul I guess. Other idea was something similar to the Zealots in Warhammer Online. He'd be unhooded so his features were visible. Most likely empty eye sockets with crazy sorcerous glow instead of eyeballs. I'm still undecided. I'm putting off working on the henchman with throwing axes as it's likely to be a full sculpt and I haven't done one of those for a while now. Need to get back into the swing of sculpting first. | |

| Minor update on the Condemned. Finished the scales and his boots today. Just the fur around the shoulders left. Also did a little more prep work on one of the Champions but nothing pic-worthy. Maybe have something worth photographing by the weekend. | |

| Nice, Catferret! Those scales are excellent! That is one seriously condemned condemned - if that makes sense. Really looking forward to seeing this one painted, and to seeing the Champion, when it's ready.
I think Marauders are second or third on my list of warbands to do, and afer seeing what you're doing with them, I can't wait!

| Blimey, fast responses on here! Cheers guys, I'll get some paint on him at some point. Maybe even this week. I'm currently helping a mate with some commission painting and it's taking up a lot of time. | |

| Thanks Tom. I have decided I hate doing scales now. A bit of a non-pictorial update tonight. I started doing furs on the Condemned but decided it was hiding the Scales too much so am going to leave it without. I did add a Tzeentch symbol to the plate on his belt so now there are no doubts as to where his (new)loyalties lie. I think he's complete now barring a nice base, but I'll leave the base until I finish the rest of the band. I also did the first stage of the clothing on the 1st Champion. Just blocking in the robes that the chainmail will be sculpted over. He's getting an ankle-length hauberk so I had to build up the shape of a skirt around his legs first. I'll get a little more done tomorrow and get a picture of him then. I promise. No stalling anymore. | |

| Wow. I never liked Marauders of Chaos but in last weeks I've seen two very impressing warbands in progress, and one of them is yours. The scales on Condemned are perfect. Great work man. Now I'm sure I like Marauders - catferret wrote:

| VERY NICE WORK! You've got the Green Stuffing down to PURE artistry. Now you're set to quit all this Chaos stuff AND start putting out some GREAT looking Goblins & Orcs...no, huh. Looking forward to seeing the Condemned one all painted up; SO get cracking. | |
