As I am still trying to catch up with missed monthly entries for Ready your Retinue 2016, I am trying some experimental "speed painting" techniques on a Genestealer Patriarch (for August's "Conquerors or Comets" theme):





Black spray undercoat, zenithal grey spray base-coat (at bit heavy-handed, so it's slightly more grey than I intended), a selective Mournfang Brown spray on the base then very lightly drybrushed white, lots of times with a fairly large brush.





First washes on. The blue took two coats as one layer of Drankenhof Nightshade was not enough.





Total time so far is about an hour and a half, including drying time between sprays and washes.

LOOKIN' GOOD...horrifying, but good! The quick technique is very effective on the Gene Stealer...doesn't look quick at all. GREAT WORK!  

I recently tried a speed painting technique on my Skaven warband and was going to post on my thread but decided I wasn’t happy with the results (to each their own I suppose). You’re beginning looks more promising. Enjoying your wonderful conversions and Blanchesque colors. Can I ask what game system you will use if or when you decide to field them?

Thanks GameDoc! "Blanchesque" is exactly what I was going for.

We are thinking about trying WH40K Kill Team without the normal restrictions and being fairly relaxed about points values. Narrative-led games, rather than competitive. We have limited time for games as we play in our lunch breaks mostly.

Just the base to finish on the Genestealer Patriarch "Grandfather Kurgan". About 2 hours work so far (not including any drying time), mostly in 5 to 10 minute bursts of activity.

Excellent speed painting technique. I especially like the effect on the claws.

The technique is working; that is an OUTSTANDING creation...or creature in this case. VERY WELL DONE!  
I would have suggested trying Death Squad, but the rules & the forum are no more. C'est la vie, eh?!

Thanks GameDoc - hehehe! The claws took almost as long to paint as the blue and purple sections combined I think!

I looked at Death Squad when it was still live and it was interesting but not for me. I prefer my rules a little more loose these days. Death Squads was very prescriptive, it was very much Mordheim for the 40k setting with set warband lists and the like.


Unfortunately the forum for it was not looked after well and for the last year (or possibly more) of it's existence it was mired by spambots that posted... "Not safe for work" content.

They way we have been discussing using WH40K Kill Team is to just use the rules as a loose framework for narrative games led by the models and the story we want to tell. They are designed to create satisfying 30 minute games, which allows us plenty of time for chatting!

The Big Bug looks suitably sinister, especially int the dark setting of the first photo. Brushwork & basing are OUTSTANDING. VERY WELL DONE!  

I decided to start an Imperial force to backup my Inquisitor in full sized 40K games. I wanted to really emphasise the medieval aspect of the 40K universe so going for robed and hooded Dark Angels Veterans with lots of scrolls and books appealed to me. One of my friends (Blessed Knight) pointed out that a Deathwatch force could consist of just the elements I like from the DA armoury, and I could use a colour scheme that more closely matched my Inq28 collection - so I have chosen to go with a DA-heavy DW army.

"Watch Company Secundus, out of Fort Obsidus, is a Deathwatch company formed almost entirely from Battle Brothers of the Dark Angels and the Unforgiven. They are currently assigned to Inquisitor Lenk and stationed aboard his Strike Cruiser, the Heartbroken Messenger."

A bit of progress. Once I have the basecoat on the paper and gold parts done I will drown them in Agrax Earthshade then start detailing them.

The Sinister Fellows are coming along SPLENDIDLY. GREAT WORK!

These came in the post yesterday.



I got the Terminators built, with two problems. One was that I don't have DW shoulder pads for them yet. The other was that I am somehow missing the back of a Terminator torso. But a Space Hulk Terminator stepped up and sacrificed it's Blood Angel insignia for the cause!

On to detailing next...

The Blood Angel is working very well with the other bitz. I like the paintjob. I can imagine however, that it would look even better if, after using Agrax and Nuln Oil over the yellow, you would paint one more highlight with the yellow tone. Just a suggestion of course.

Thanks Grimscull, but don't worry - the Deathwatch are far from finished. Have a look through the previous posts in this thread for an idea of how they will look when completed.

The Space Marines are always prepared to sacrifice their bodies for The Emperor...could be why there are so few of them.  

If they aren't finished I didn't say nothing. The Patriarch is superb btw!

I've nearly finished painting the first batch of Deathwatch models but I distracted myself building this.

Brother-Chaplain Zephon (just the standard Deathwatch Chaplain with a Deathwing Knight's head)

The WONDERFULLY adaptable parts are THE GREAT thing about G.W. kits for moi. Your Space Marine Holy Guy is a FINE example of the unique pieces the parts can yield with some imagination. WELL DONE!
