The City of Dunbrough - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: The City of Dunbrough   The City of Dunbrough - Page 5 Icon_minitimeTue 4 Sep 2012 - 2:54

This project was just another building in town, when someone suggested it should be a potter due to the big chimney on the one side. So I went with that concept and added a lot of little jars and bottles, a couple of scratchbuilt trees, some gripping beast swine. Based on sheet acrylic with a stripped foamcore layer yo carve the cobblestone out of. While the stripped foamcore is great for basing, I didn't get such good results out of it when building the actual structure. You can see that in the arches.

Wow! Look how quickly you managed to finish this amazing project!

I love it! Great composition, structure and details. The foliage on the staircase is superb. The paintjob is awesome too; the chimney with different colours, thus standing out, the wood painted green (a big lesson for me, as I usually paint my wood brown - too obvious) and all the products that they make and sell on the spot.

Thanks for sharing the remarkable photos - especially the last two, for the realism. Smile

My goodness, that is a great piece of terrain.
I like all the detail you've put into this. the pots, the signpost, and the leaves really bring the piece to life.
Very well done!

Recently finished this one, a pretty small set of buildings. The cooper saves building material by butting his shop right to the city wall. The tax cheat does the same, but his cottage lies outside of the city, putting it right in the line of fire if the city comes under attack.

Carved from blue foam and balsa. Woodland Scenics fine leaf foliage for the saplings, I love the way these turn out, kind of expensive though.

Once more you've created a LOVELY IDYLLIC Medieval Scene...I love the way your thatch turned out. BRILLIANTLY WELL DONE! thumbsup
Judging from the foliage in the background, I'd say your Woodhaven is in a Northerly locale. clown

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity, theo. There is a Woodhaven in Queens, New York that I'm familiar with; it's part of New York City & bears little resemblance to the pleasant woods in your background. What a Face

Your town is outstanding.
Had I not known any better (and I could be proven wrong) that your background trees were part of your table... It is that life like.

The one (and I mean 1!) thing that could be said to be "wrong" or not fit is the color of your city wall does not blend with the other two wall sections. Stand alone it looks perfect but next to the other two it doesn't blend well.

This building is several years newer than the other two buildings that sit on the wall. Before I always did just a drybrush on the walls, and I'm trying to get away from that. So yes, it is intentional, even if it doesn't match. The way the blocks are carved is different on all three sections as well. It doesn't bother me too much. Maybe I'll go back repaint the walls on the other two.

Thanks for the comments folks!

Wow, love it! Your ability to fotograph your scenery is quite good, you always manage to catch the right light, background and so on, perfect, a pleasure for the eye!

Thanks!
A few tricks I've picked up. Morning and evening give you dramatic, long shadows.
I prefer cloudy days, it diffuses the light and lights everything pretty evenly. It sets a mood too.
I also try to find a background of trees or whatever that is quite off in the distance. I'll shoot the building around 3 feet off the ground. This lowers the background, and makes it look closer to scale. It also blurs the ground a bit, obscuring individual grasses. It's tougher though, the more megapixels you've got. Finally, I just rest the camera on the surface that the building is on. That brings it to scale eye level, more or less.
