the "Random Little Questions" thread

I had an idea for a thread where you post any little questions that you might want a 2nd/3rd/etc opinion on. They won't deserve their own thread but it could be for things that are bugging you and halting your progress. Things like for, for example:

*What colour should I paint the horns of my bloodthirster?
*Do you think a skaven arm would look right on a human?
*How many eyes should I sculpt onto my river troll?
*can a possessed ever have too many claws and tentacles?

Ok here's the question that spawned the idea:

I've sculpted a skaven with pointy ears, I know they're not supposed to as rats don't but do you reckon with a bit of artistic license I can get away with it?

To answer your question: I do think you can get away with it. Especially as they are constantly wyrdstone collecting/consuming so a little mutation here and there is certainly realistic. Especially in Mordheim!

That's a great answer as well Cianty, now I'm 100% happy with my sculpt it might be appearing soon as a WIP along with a WIP rat ogre and the rest of my warband which is fully painted!

Hmmm... that is pretty flexible, as long as the giant looks "huge" comapred to normal guys but is not way out of proportion.

I would say anything around 20cm is fine.

Am I allowed to use NON-GW miniatures here? The SG Forums were under GW licensing dealio's and thus half the bands I ever played were NOT allowed to even be mentioned there. Will I get mobbed/burnt at the stake/excommunicated from what ever church I deem to be at worship at said time of statements if I reference non-GW materials and miniatures such as reaper Miniatures, Privateer Press stuff or any of the hundreds of other miniatures companies out there? Further is postings aid images forbidden here or can finally we have a place that isn't so ingrained in the GW crap that we can be free of it all and actually acknowledge that whilst GW stuff is great there are better models in the world and alot at much cheaper prices as well?

You can post whatever you want (as long as it's not discriminating, porn, etc of course!). There's a post dedicated to Avatars of War and you can see warbands using non-Citadel Miniatures in the Gallery section. So please go ahead and post your photos. We don't care about companies here. In fact, you are encouraged to suggest miniatures producers that you like or scenery/terrain shops you have found useful (like e.g. Antenocitie's).

Of course! If you look at the forum header you will see that the dwarf lady is a non GW model (Reaper actually).

God no! ... that is... yes, actually. But only if you knowingly and repeatedly do so in the wrong section to annoy the mods on purpose.

I read this as "so long as it is not descriminating porn" and my first thought was 'what exactly constitutes discriminatory porn in the first place?' It did puzzle me for a minute or two and then I re-read the post, lol. :p

I currently have few to none photo's i can actually post up as I don't have a digital camera. Actually I have a scanner BUT don't know how to downsize the scans yet...

Cheers and thanks alot, been quite happy posting thus far, though had a whole lot of free time also so that could explain it all.

Good to know I can post up whatever I've got for the game without being beaten down for saying "Hey, Check this guy out from spyglass miniatures" or something similar. Oh, also can we express our own views on GW also when we really want to vent? I noticed an opinion's section...heh.

The Opinion-Box is for meta stuff concerning the forum itself. If you want to rant about GW, which is probably a bit pointless, though Deaf just started his own rant, do so in the General Shout-it-out forum.

What glue should I use to stick a plastic model onto a flying base?
Also can you glue two bits of plastic together with plastic glue/polystyrene cement if they have paint in between them?

You can glue plastic parts together when they are painted, however, the paint will go off in the process so you will have to touch up the area afterwards.

Evo-Stick is good for flying bases, as it is transparent when dry. Gluing painted models depends on what type of paint you used, some will resist the glue creating a weak bond.

If I want to paint metallic parts on my miniatures, do I have to do a black undercoat on those parts ? Or will it turn out ok with a white undercoat ?

I use black, white, & a combination of both [dry brush of white over a black base]; AND metallics work just fine with all the differnet bases. Actually, the base color seems to have less of an impact with the metallics than the flat colors.

I only use black basecoat. I guess you can paint metallics on white too, however if you want to drybrush them (which is one of the easiest and nicest techniques) you need black.

So I suggest giving the metallic parts a black coat on your white mini before brushing them.

I find that even if you like applying a wash to your metallics, a heavy drybrush underneath still gives more depth than just a flat metallilc surface.

Fearless Leader Tom, as always, is correct. I don't dry brush my metallics, however. I do the same layering of shades as I do with NMM. Over the base coat I paint a dark metallic shade, then subsequent layers along high areas & the edges are done in progressively lighter shades.

Haha no, you haven't confused me Thank you very much for your answers ! I will probably just try a light metal color and wash it with a darker one. My dwarves have a bunch of small metal pieces everywhere and drybrushing small parts is not something I do easily.

The ABSOLUTE BEST method is the one that works for you.

I have never actually tried this, but it sounds a little dangerous... using metallics as washes that is. If you like washes, I strongly recommend Devlan Mud for metallics.
