| Hahah, that is much smaller than I thought it was lol. I blame this picture for leading me astray: - wamez wrote:
My personal opinion is it's going to be a small pain either way, and don't see enough advantage to doing all the extra work to make it removable... (unless of course it's very little work to make it removable.) What materials did you make it with? =]

| @Ashton - Yeah, I got a little creative with the photography. As for the materials, nothing unusual. The bases are matte board (thick cardboard). The walls are foam core. The roof tiles and wall carving detail are thin card from things like cereal boxes (pretty much whatever I could find which is why the colors are all different). And there are two kinds of balsa - very thin sheets and your standard balsa sticks (maybe 3/16"?). You can't really see where I used the balsa sheets -- they've been cut to look like wooden planking on the ceiling. And the balsa sticks are the ceiling framework on top of that. I still have a lot to do. The main door (which will be knocked off its hinges), the stained glass window (not sure if it's going to be just a frame or if I'm actually going to paint something to look like stained glass -- ugh), tiling the floor, finishing the wall detail. Hopefully, I'll get to a point when I can finally paint the thing... | |

It's awesome. I love your photography. I'd just recommend adding a mini for scale. (It'll also force you to paint more minis better so you don't always have the same mini in every picture... or maybe it's just me ) - wamez wrote:

Sweet. You've done a marvelous job. How do you cut the card? All your cuts are soo straight!

| The straight cuts are due to lots of measuring. If I'm not totally flying by the seat of my pants, I generally design the pattern on graph paper, then lay it on the card (or foam-core, depending) and poke holes at all the corners with a push-pin. Then I draw out all the lines on the card (because you'll start cutting away your reference holes) and use a metal straight edge and an X-Acto knife. Card seems to dull the blades very quickly, so I try to reserve new blades for foam-core (which really needs the sharp edge to get a good cut) and use old blades on card which is much more forgiving. Also, there's no such thing as a one-stroke cut no matter what the material. That way you're not wearing out your hand or pushing so hard that you lose the path of the straight edge. Also, plan for many mistakes. I think all this cutting is why it's taking so long. I'm really looking forward to my next project which will include not one piece of gothic stone design. | |

| Love it. All the way! I ran to the hardware store today after seeing this. I wanted foamboard and balsa wood. I ended up with the bubbly-foam ("let's pack our computers with something dampening.... like this white [insert the right word]"-kind of foam) and popcickle-sticks. Anyhow, I hope my building will turn out all right! | |

A quick tip here, most printers will print on some kind of clear sheets or transparncies, there's a few different names. Anyhow this is a much easier way to make it. Here is a great tutorial from Hirst Arts: http://www.hirstarts.com/tips3/tips3.html#glassWhat you've done so far is awsome! Can't wait to see it finished!

| I'm embarrassed it's taken me this long, but I finally got some work done on my ruined cathedral (as well as some other things). I still have a lot of little things to address -- not the least of which is some weathering that I hope will give it that special Mordheim kick. In addition to the buildings, these shots feature my new and nearly complete Skaven warband, my wife's Sisters of Sigmar (her first miniature-painting attempt!), and some dwarves I did back in the day. First up is another WIP: a fountain inspired by many other fountains found on this forum. There are heads on both sides, I just wasn't thinking when I took the shot. Next up is a ruined corner of a building that I built for testing purposes. Wanted to try flagstones, burned effects, etc. Simple, but I like how it turned out: Finally, the cathedral itself. Like I said, needs some weathering/moss/burned timbers. I'm also planning on gluing the roof and finishing the final ridge of tiles across the existing spine. Then I need to add some more highlighting both on the roof and around the building itself. And here's the crypt below. I need to build some stone coffins and such. Maybe a torch or two would be neat. And a bookcase? Anyway... I'm still open to criticism and ideas. I'm obviously slow at this, but I'm trying to dedicate a little more time to it for the next couple of months. | |

| WELL WORTH THE WAIT! You can't rush perfection afterall, & the creative experience should be savored. I LOVE what you're doing with the fountain; the faucet head is SO cool. The Catherdral IS magnificent, &, with the underground area accessible, it's not just a BEAUTIFUL piece, but also VERY gamesworthy. AND the corner ruin IS exceptionally well done. GREAT STUFF! | |

| Wow, that's just perfect! I'd love to play in that cathedral. Very nice. If I'd make some progress with my ordinary terrain, I sure would do one myself after seeing this. | |

| Thanks for the words of encouragement!
I did forget to mention the stained glass window. I've got a design on paper, I've just been avoiding it because it's going to be a pain in the butt.
Looking forward to seeing this through...

| Uh, there was a GW stained glass window tutorial once upon a time (before the new website), which basically involved printing the designs on transparency. It did not sound too pain-in-the-butt-like, so you might want to try that | |
