Hi guys. I'm working on some buildings without interior. Nothing fancy, just some dwellings built onto a crumbled bridge. The problem is: I'm totally out of inspiration when it comes to selection of colour on the rocky parts. So give me a nudge in a direction, will you? It's for a competition over at TG

Here's one of the three builds.

Looking great, man!

For stone you can start with a dark grey and then drybrush it with lighter greys and creams to highlight the stone.

Cianty has some great terrain painting tutorials here: http://cianty-tabletop.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/Tutorial

Keep us posted on your progress, please! Smile

Stone is very rarely just grey in real life.

I'd recommend starting from a dark brown, rather than grey. Use as much grey as you like in the dry-brushed layers but having a dark brown base makes for a more natural, realistic looking stone to my eyes. I'd also add a few thinned washes of black, brown and green to some areas as well for a greater range of colours.

Damn, forgot to mention the washes!!!

And yes, dark brown as a base is also a good idea. For variation, you can have dark grey on some, dark brown on others. It also helps to add some weathering with lighter browns, and/or greens for moss effects.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I got something to work with now.
@ von Kurst: I was looking for something more varied than the Hirst Arts site, Inspiring place it has been for years though.
@ JoaoS: Great link! And good to see Chianty is back to the important stuff.
@ Warboos Curgan: Yeah. Great tip with the washes and base.
I'll try out your suggested washes and drybrushes and see what I come up with. And there will be liberal amounts of weathering off course - staining, powders and foliage... Pictures coming...

That turned out to be an EXCELLENT piece of craftsmanship. The colors you chose are TERRIFIC I especially like the crumbled section with the variety of different colored rocks. VERY WELL DONE! thumbsup

I can't take credit for the soil and rocks, I'm afraid. Just letting nature doing its own work.
