| Stone is very rarely just grey in real life.
I'd recommend starting from a dark brown, rather than grey. Use as much grey as you like in the dry-brushed layers but having a dark brown base makes for a more natural, realistic looking stone to my eyes. I'd also add a few thinned washes of black, brown and green to some areas as well for a greater range of colours.

And yes, dark brown as a base is also a good idea. For variation, you can have dark grey on some, dark brown on others. It also helps to add some weathering with lighter browns, and/or greens for moss effects. Joao | |

| Thanks for the feedback guys. I got something to work with now. @ von Kurst: I was looking for something more varied than the Hirst Arts site, Inspiring place it has been for years though. @ JoaoS: Great link! And good to see Chianty is back to the important stuff. @ Warboos Curgan: Yeah. Great tip with the washes and base. I'll try out your suggested washes and drybrushes and see what I come up with. And there will be liberal amounts of weathering off course - staining, powders and foliage... Pictures coming... | |
