Ugly buildings of Horror a.k.a. first steps

Here you are, my first experiences with buildings.





First I tried the instructions of magabotato 17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xhGjnfTQ4E (german only, starting at 1:15). I used a cerials box and a lot of glue. After a while, I realized that a cottage without windows and a missing door looks strange, and because there is no chance to leave the roof removable, plus I've got no intention to make some interieurs, I'll try and split the roof in two to make it look like a burnout house.






The next thing I bought some styrodur. But the thinnest I could find is still 30mm thick. Tough luck! I have noch Styro-cutter. Things got nasty and it is quite a mess to handle it with knives. Again I wanted to have a removable roof, but when you look at the inside...

Looking good - both buildings. And the wooden door and windows are promising.

The inside of the building also looks nice (even with all the foam slaughter that happened in there!). It's great to have cracks and faults - gives a good, realistic feel to it!

They both look good, you are on the right track!

LOOKIN' GOOD! The swaybacked look to the roof is a cool touch. I like what you're doing with the door, windows, & the wood grain on the first building. Keep up the GOOD WORK...you'll have a great gaming board in no time!

You're off to a great start! Can't wait to see more!

That painted up VERY NICELY...I like the red roof. WELL DONE!

Since only buildings are boring you need accessories. So, here are some stone walls and ladders:




Phase one: cut a lot of blocks

Phase two: ???

Phase three: profit



Next try will be a (ruined) building with this kind of tehnique

looks good , looks good, but you can give those stone walls more character if you´d use some smaller stones in between, makes them look more ramskackled, or some deep gashes in between.

I like the ladders but agree with floedebolle on the stonework . Making them more vary in sizes and shape would add more realism:

Also, there is a really cool way of giving texture to foam to resemble stone. Get some tin foil, make a small ball with it and then roll it over the foam. Simple and very effective!

I wanted to honour DeafNala and painted one wall with the old citadel shadow grey, so now it looks like blue stone

The Building & especially the walls painted up VERY NICELY...you achieved a fine depth of color with the greys. VERY WELL DONE!

Finally real ruins are on their way:





7mm thick corrugated cardboard. Fits better than 30mm thick Styrodur.

Finished the left one today and some stones.

Man, I LOVE the work you did on that building on the left! So simple and yet so effective. The texturised wall looks amazing! What materials did you use? Filler?

hahaha my precious little secret. You will never guess it... NEVER...
I' m sure you have it at your place.... it is.... *drums*... toilet paper

mix wood glue 1/2 with water 1/2 ( a bit more water than glue)
make the surface wet with the mixture
put on toilet paper (or kichen tissue)
wet it again with the mixture and "make" some textures through moving your brush (it schould be really wet)
let it dry overnight - next morning it should be hard like stone



I used two layers on the cutting edges to hide them

LOOKIN' GOOD! The finished piece, the rocks, & the toilet paper wall all are WELL DONE!

My buildings so far:


Some accessoires made of milliput that'll be add to the walls and buildings.
upper row: 6 bottles (I hope they look more like bottles when painted) and a sleeping bag
below: fighting stick, rake, hammer, mining pick, 3 shovels and... something on a stick... someting round (suggestions are welcome)

That is coming along VERY NICELY. I like the rickety walkway between the two buildings...duels above the street are Oh-So-Cool.
The tools have definite potential. Keep up the GOOD WORK!

Looking good! The accessories will be valuable additions to your terrain.

What about the board itself? Do you have any ideas of where do you to place your buildings?

The plan was to use rigid foam


so I can curve cobblestone in it and it's pretty light. Not sure if it won't brake if anyone leans on in, though. So maybe You need some Wood reinforcement, that would make the board heavey on the other hand
It is the next thing on my list, before constructing more buildings. Have to paint the ready ones, and paint more minis

as to the tools, I'd say give them a thorough sanding/filing down, to make the angles sharper, and the surface smoother, particularly the hammer and mining pick are rather round, where they usually have much more 90 degree angles.
the shovels are a bit bumpy too, so if you just sand that down a bit, they become smoother, and much better looking. easy fix for great props!

and yes! ladders all over the place! excellent.
