Bad news... GW has contacted me and requested that all Mordheim materials be removed from our site.

What? Everything that is on Tabletopgeeks? How long do we have to download the last bits that aren't on our harddrives already anyway? And why now anyways?

They asked that I remove not only the Town Cryers and other official documents, but even some of the player made stuff because it uses GW material.

I've already edited the pages and removed all links. The content is still available if you have the direct links saved, but I will be removing it all this evening.

Well, Tabletop Geeks will still be going. I emailed back asking if I was allowed to keep my Roster Builder up. I'm really hoping they don't try and make me take that down.

This really sucks for Mordheim though.

That REALLY SUCKS big time...it's the sort of miserable, senseless thing that Greedy Old G.W. is becoming famous for.

I wonder if maybe they just now, after 2+ years, decided to do this because they are planning on releasing some new Mordheim stuff...

We were debating this exact possibility over at a german forum. A mod there says though, that GW might just defend their copyright because, after american law, it will be gone after a time otherwise. While I have no idea about american copyright law, this would explain the time of action since GW just now experiences the differences between british and american copyright (filing a lawsuit agains a small factory that releases models for units GW didn't release a model for yet).

I also am not sure how long a copyright remains in force; however, after a certain number of years, published material ceases to be copyrighted & becomes public domain. It's a point to consider with G.'s actions.

And now I was asked to remove the Roster Builder or modify it to remove all Mordheim stats. :-/

In the interest of truth in advertising, perhaps G.W. should change their name to Greed Workshop.

they give out the rule book for free on there web site; the old books you can't buy unless from a 3rd party (e-bay) so there is no proffit in it for them to cut this resource to the players; unless they plan a re launch of information/game to sell.
I don't hold it against them trying to turn a proffit; they made the game after all. But this just hurts there fan base with out having an alternative.
Heck I have got back into playing because of all the fan information out there and plan to start spending large amounts of $$$ again on minitures (many of the GW variant) due to this. had there not been the fan information out there I would not have near the interest in playing I do now and would not be getting my son involved who loves Mordheim but not so much the WHFB's.

Well, let's be honest here... the way tabletopgeeks hosted all the GW files just begged for them to become active at some point. Remember that we're not even talking the PDFs GW put up themselves back in the days... we're talking ANYTHING Mordheim here... scanned GW publications (Town Cryer) and such.

To get access to Mordheim PDFs there is still the somewhat/kinda/semi- official Mordheim Yahoo group which hosts everything you need to play.

Seriously, a private blog with googleads and donate button not being allowed to host ripped commercial content shouldn't be a reason for "fans" to start bitching about a company.

I do partly agree with you Cianty. From my perspective though it is disappointing that GW want the roster builder taken down.

It's probably a "all or nothing" move that may not be totally necessary. If the site had always only hosted the rosters then it probably wouldn't have gained GW's attention at all.

If there was a way to get them through GW then I'd understand that they don't want them out on other websites, if they charged money for them or not. But now it leaves quite a few players out of those resources. I'm glad I got to take a look at them before they were taken down at least.

If GW still want to support Mordheim and don't want others keeping sites with downloadable pdf's, then they should host them themselves. No problemo.

Per, that is exactly my stance on it as well and I'm sure most of the fan base. We want to be able to get the resources and enjoy this fun game.

I side with the free material front

From the a German Mordheim forum, I know that we usually are really into all this copyright stuff, but seriously, why? They stopped releasing all their materials, then also terminated the FO stuff, and it's hard to get much of the interesting things. The only way to get them legally is through third parties, which usually involves quite some money - money that might be better spend on miniatures or something.

Also, having all this material available for free helps players to create their own stuff, try alternative warbands, etc., giving players of Mordheim a lot of the things that make the game special and creating the revival and renewed growth in fanbase we have seen in recent years.

Considering an official relaunch by GW, I'd be thrilled (though given recent price developments, they should announce it a few months afterwards so we can all save a little money for the new releases without cutting into our pension's fund ). However, I wonder if they'd be willing to put a lot of time and effort in a game that might yield comparatively little revenue.

As for the copyright issue, I think it takes quite a while untill it runs out and just not prosecuting copyright violations shouldn't forfeit the copyright in any way.

Our Mordheim league hopped online at the store on Saturday to grab some rules I'd forgotten to bring with me... and we saw that all the files had been removed. Boooo!

Fortunately, I may or may not have downloaded all the files days before they were removed. Svenn, you deserve a beer for everything you've done for this community.

Unfortunately, I believe (at least in the US) if you do not attempt to protect your copyright you can actually lose it. I'm no lawyer and I don't know specifics on the laws but that's what I've been told.

I believe it is UK copyright law that runs it actually. US copyright law protects you even if you don't defened it for a bit, just not neccesarily retroactivly.

GW is mostly hit by the UK laws. For them if they learn of a use and do not take action within a specified time they lose the ENTIRE IP! Although from what I know this is an extreme case since it is not an active IP or publication.

Do you know what annoys me about this?

The fact that even if I wanted to, I couldn't buy the collected TCs from GW.
