When he had taken his post Al Bobo had been bright and alert for danger. However as long hours of the night passed he had grown weary, just now he thought he heard something.
"Who goes there?" the Mamluk Hassan called out. Al Bobo rushed toward Hassan's voice.
"What have you seen?" Al Bobo demanded.
"I thought I saw something on the stairs, there," Hassan pointed. "But now all I see is shadow."
Al Bobo peered into the darkness. There on the stair. A huge bulk that was not shadow. It was a Djinni of the Night!
"Aiiiieeeee!" shouted Al Bobo. "Foes come in the night! Awake!"
The shadow moved! An arrow flew out the night toward the Askar. Al Bobo flinched back behind the cover of the arch. Hassan took up his shout. In the distance he could hear the rest of his brothers take up the cry. But he heard nothing from Tariq, who had been patrolling this side of the building earlier.
Suddenly green fire engulfed Hassan. The Mamluk dropped his bow as he writhed in the flame. Sorcery and Djinni! The Faithful were undone. More shadows gathered on the stair.
Al Bobo turned and threw himself back into the shelter of the building. Arrows glanced off the mud-brick walls as he found cover.
Al Bobo looked around quickly. There were more things on the stairs from the upper town, one of the fiends was on the stairs of the building he occupied. Al Bobo tripped the hidden switch that Arem Shah claimed activated the trap that guarded his strongroom door. Then the Askar passed through the door opposite the strongroom to the canal ledge outside.
Al Bobo threw himself flat against the adobe wall. From inside the building he heard loud footsteps and guttural voices calling out in a language he did not recognize. Across the canal the Askar could see light in the boarding house. His brothers were coming, but they had to cross the bridge or swim the canal. Al Bobo listened for pursuit. It sounded as though the attackers had stopped at the strongroom door. The Djinni were thieves!
Al Bobo heard a metallic 'click' from inside the building. The click was followed by a sizzling sound, then the thud of a heavy body falling. A thief was down! Al Bobo decided to strike while the thieves were confused by the trap. Al Bobo lunged around the corner into the corridor. He could see something sprawled by the door. Al Bobo chopped down with his scimitar. He felt the blade bite, then he tried to lunge back as another shape moved to his left. The Askar felt a horrible pain in his left leg! He was falling...
Al Bobo awoke to pain. He tried to lunge at his attackers but a strong hand on his chest held the Askar down.
"Hold!" growled Haroum, the Emir of the Ghutani. "The thieves and our gold are gone. The Foreign Devil's soldiers pursue them, but I doubt they will catch such slow and clumsy thieves since they have stolen only Believers' gold."Post Battle Al Bobo misses a game with a smashed leg. The orc shaman survives against the odds. The orcs get rich. Next installment "Arrows in the Dark".

Ha! ______________________________________________________________________________________ The Tale of Elf Arrows from the DarkMir Sher paced the deck of the dhow called the Dancing Cloud. It was well after sunset, but Emir Haroum had yet to return from the town. The harbor was dimly lit, the moons had not yet risen. Mir Sher could barely see the bulk of the nearest buildings.
"He will return soon," said Babiars, giving voice to her concerns. "We should away," said Mir Sher needlessly. Everyone was aboard save the Emir and the Mamluk Tariq who guarded him. The tribe's business in the town was concluded. There was no reason to linger aside from the absence of the Emir.
"All will be well, it is in the One's hands," said the scholar known as the Djinni Binder.
There was the sound of feet running on a wooden deck or floor. "Who goes there?" cried Hassan. The Ghutani made to secure the ship. Aside from the sounds of furtive movement, the crew could perceive nothing in the darkness around them. As he rushed toward the bow, the Mamluk Farid gave a cry and fell over the starboard rail. Hassan was down on the deck as well. Near the port rail the Holy Man screamed and clutched his chest as he fell back.
"Take cover!" yelled Babiars as he notched an arrow to his bow. The crew hugged the rails and peered into the night seeking their unseen attackers. Mir Sher pulled the body of the Holy Man to shelter, but it was too late for him. A slim arrow jutted obscenely from his chest. Suddenly there was a thump to starboard. Something had hit the hull. The Faithful eyed the rail as they prepared to meet their boarders. The Emir clambered over the rail. Farid and Tariq followed. "Cast off! Why tarry ye here!" hissed Haroum. The crew hastened to obey as more arrows sought them out of the night. Post battle The Holy Man died. Hassan recovered. The Faithful rolled the exploration event Loose Lips and cashed the three treasures they held due to the scenario. All the Mamluks rolled their first advance. Two +1 initiatives and BS 5. A new Holy Man and a new Mamluk are hired. The Elves gained an easy victory sniping from beyond the range of weak human eyes. They also rolled the Loose Lips event and cashed in the three treasures they held from the scenario as well. The Elves received 130 dinars. ____________________________________________________________________________________ The Tale of the AbominationThe Ghutani moved in a rough line through the slums of the Theives' Quarter of Al Haikk. The tribesmen and woman walked with their hands on the hilts of weapons. Tales of blasphemy had reached the ears of Emir Haroum. As a servant of the One he and his tribe were honor bound to seek out the truth of these rumors. Aye and to punish the evil doer if the rumors were true.
Half men had been seen down by the docks: Mockery of man and beast; Men with hooves; Beasts with the hands of Men and the faces of toads or lizards. An evil priest was said to worship the Old Gods of Jafar the Accursed. The Djinni Binder said the rumors were true. Emir Haroum brought the tribe out on this moonless night to seek the evildoers.
From the roof of the house of Hasput the Believer, Emir Haroum surveyed the slums. His plan was to approach the docks using the walk boards joining the house of Hasput with that of the Miser Arem Shah (may camels spit in his soup). Before the Faithful could cross the bridge, the skies opened up with a stinging rain. Acid! The very sky was raining acid upon them. The Holy Man and the Djinni Binder began to pray. The Askar Majed screamed and fainted as the rain burned his body. The Faithful sought refuge in the house of Hasput and other nearby hovels. Amid the chaos Emir Haroum could hear other screams and howls in the night. Someone or something was out there in the darkness!
The stinging rain soon ceased. The Faithful ventured forward toward the sound of those howls in the darkness. Suddenly a man appeared to float out of the shadow cloaked alleyway behind Arem Shah's home. The man touched down and began to chant a foul litany. An arrow from Hassan's bow silenced him. As the man fell, monstrous beings were revealed crawling along the alley behind him. The Mamluks showered the monstrosities with arrows. One roared in pain. Both charged! Hassan was struck down! The Beasts surged forward. Farid blocked the bridge. More things appeared in the alleyway. Tariq had gained the roof of Arem Shah's house. The Mamluk shot one of the abominations with his crossbow. A man with hooves tried to charge Majed, but slipped on the foul cobbles of the alley. Majed rushed upon the fallen abomination and slew it. Suddenly a great terror fell upon the Faithful and the abominations alike. With terrified wails, all combatants drew apart and fled into the night.Post Battle The skirmish ended as a draw by store closing. All of the Faithful's casualties recovered. A Mutant named Malice perished. Both the Faithful and the Abominations gained one Djinni's Curse Point.

| An Ambush in the Thieves QuarterThe Khalibon Manpower Exchange and the Shadow Elfs attempt to rob the Ancient One of her ill gotten gold... Elfs waste arrows on skeletons. The elfs are far away. And not likely to get any closer. The Ancient One and a minion escape the Slavers. The Slavers are trampled by an invisible crowd fleeing the Undead. They are getting away. Bagel the Ogre is distracted by shiny bones. Post Battle Nothing is reported killed. The Lhamians collect twelve treasures before rolling for exploration. ____________________________________________________________________________________ The Eaters of the DeadThe Cathayans 'rescue' a Mad Prince from ghouls and Possessed The Cathayans listen to the Possessed fight ghouls off in the dark while escorting the Prince to safety. Despite having the faster warband (the better to reach the objective of the scenario), the Possessed become obsessed with fighting randomly encountered ghouls. Post Battle The Cathayans win. They receive a large ransom and roll five 6s in exploration. The Possessed end up with a wounded Mutant and 2D6 gold. | |

| Fancy Meeting YOU 'ere!An inebriated chance encounter in the Thieves Quarter It is a dark night. The Possessed, perhaps fearing more ghouls are about, try to hide in a convenient courtyard. The greedy Slavers, whose henchmen are mostly drunk, play hide and seek. Come out, come out! The Possessed swarm the sacrificial Ogre. It does not end well for the Possessed. Post Battle The Possessed accumulate more injuries. The Slavers cash in more gold. ____________________________________________________________________________________ A Skirmish in Al-HaikkThe Slavers face the Lhamian horde The Slavers defend the very building they just captured from the Possessed. The Undead are coming! Post Battle A Slaver hero was robbed, however the Slavers captured the thief. The captured thief elected to join the warband rather than be executed. In a fit of gratitude the thief tells the Slavers of the Tower of the Elephant, a rich treasure hoard hardly guarded at all... The Lhamians win. Nothing dies but Nabil the Overseer is reduced to T3 due to a chest wound. | |

| Well it seems like everyone is enjoying the return to Araby...including moi. The scenery is WONDERFUL...someone ought to tell the store owner that unbroken, green flocked tables look crumby with every setting. GREAT STUFF! One question I've never found the answer to: what is a treasure worth...in gold pieces that is? | |

| On The Eaters of the Dead,
Tis not really the Possessed's fault they could not recover the prince, as the prince felt the need to run straight towards the Cathayans and then charge one of them, who graciously decided to fight back only with his hands.

| Ambush in the Thieves QuartersJournal of Jonias, "retired" Frankian Mercenary. It was a very dark night, and the foreign Cathayan Pirates, calling themselves some random assortment of syllables that apparently passes for a name in their homeland, were celebrating atop my house. They'd paid me a fine hoard of gold for the use of it, and so I would have called them kings if they'd asked for it. The best thing this stupid home had done for me since I purchased it after the crusades died out. Ironically, I was waiting until the rush home died out because I didn't trust the seaways to be safe. Now I'm accepting money to host garishly blue and red dressed pirates with squinty eyes in my home. It wasn't long until their revelry and frivolous uses of gunpowder attracted attention. From the south, vile undead drew forth, from the north green skinned savages. The revelry died down, and through the darkness, we could hear them close in. Eventually, I even heard orcs rustling through my home on the lower floors!"Get out of here, you can't fight in my home, you'll ruin it!" I bellowed at their leader, who was, oddly enough, was the group's only woman with a giant red flag strapped to her back. She simply raised her hand, waiting a few moments, before smiling. "Good advice... They are close. OVER THE WALLS!"Her troops suddenly vaulted over the walls, smashing into the undead attempting to scale the walls from above. Her men were ridiculously well trained, I didn't see a single one of them fall, and the undead were quickly routed before the Orcs could do more than fire a few arrows.
As the undead fled into the night, the Cathayans suddenly switching tactics and hiding carefully behind the walls to lure the orc savages closer before attacking. The Lady leading the pirates gives her orders in her native tongue at this point, so I'm left more or less in the dark as I watch the battle from the "safety" of my home. A few sudden charges later, and the orcs too have fled. Their leader approaches me once more, "You have seen how flawlessly we can defend ourselves.. How about we make our arrangement at your home more... permanent?""Flawlessly? What about those dead guys!" I point to the gaggle of dead Cathayans dressed in all black. "Mmm? Oh, those are ninjas. More of them just show up when you turn your back. Aren't worth caring about." She is quite dismissive of the fate of her men. "Huh... Well, how much you offering?""60.""90.""70.""80.""75.""78. Final offer.""Agreed." And so it was that I fell in with the Cathayan pirates. Well, my luck as the Cathayan Pirates was on fire for the entire game. I couldn't fail an initiative test, and I only failed two fear tests. My warband beat off both the orcs and the undead without losing a single hero. And then Karma came a knocking and took out almost every single henchmen who had OoA in battle, leaving my warband very rich but with 120ish gold worth of henchmen dead. Decided to buy them back later and invest in a house.

Amen, brother Alan! Yeah the store manager is very proud of his contribution to our games. He wrapped that table special for a holiday display, but said we could use it during the rest of the year. (Nice of him since the theater I work for donated all the 4x4s the store has.) I should be glad that he didn't decide to use one of the ocean tables. - Quote :

One treasure is worth one wyrdstone or one artifact or one cargo. They have no fixed value, you have to cross reference the number of 'treasures' with the number of warriors in your warband on the table provided in the rulebook. If you have fewer warriors your treasures will bring you more gold because your expenses are lower. Woot! Andrew is posting again!

| Thank you for the kind words qboid. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Week Two--The Monkey's PawPlayers and WarbandsAndrew--Cathayan Pyrates (Sartosa) Bob--Savage Orcs Chris--(Lhamian Vampyres (Khemri) Jim L--The Kalibon Manpower Exchange II (Relics Slavers) Jim S--The Faithful (Relics Ghutani, Arabian Tribe) A Tale of Drunken Infidels"Has not the Prophet said 'beware the fruit of the vine?'' asked Emir Haroum as he parried the Outlander's clumsy attack. "We must bring enlightenment to our brothers."
The Emir smote the lout with the flat of his blade. The Outlander collapsed. "A few years on the galleys of the Caliph will cure his thirst." observed the Emir. His servants hastened to drag the man away.
The Faithful had come to the Street of the Grape to harvest a few Outlanders to provide rowers for the Caliph's fleet. The Ocuupiers' fleet had just arrived. The taverns and inns that catered to the Outlander's sailors were full of drunken men. Now that the curfew had been sounded, press gangs had begun to cull those who had indulged too much from their wiser fellows.
Suddenly a hound bounded from the darkness. Emir Haroum was forced to defend himself from the cur's attack. His Askar, Al Bobo, the scholar known as the Djinni Binder and the Mumlak Farid had become embroiled in a swirling fight on the Great Stair. One Outlander held them at bay with cutlass and dagger. The Emir dispatched the dog, but as he did so a loud voice rumbled from the shadows, "You hurt Puppi! You bad Man! Baghel hurt bad Man!"
The Emir found himself dueling an immense ogre. As he fought the Emir realized that the dog's appearance was not a random encounter. The Khalibon Manpower Exchange hunted for slaves in the night! The Faithful encounter the Slavers almost immediately. [Note the clever product placement. Sponsors are important, even to wargames.] The Cathayans approach from the west. Pickings were better over there than I realized. [I set up first.] There is one lone drunk on the Great Stair. The encounter between the warbands turns violent. Casualties on both sides. In the distance the drunk downs Farid, Puppi attacks! Kaldoon [or perhaps Fathi] captures a drunk. Baghel the ogre and Ruffi consider contesting a drunk with the Cathayans. Baghel and Ruffi go to help Puppi. The Cathayans watch them leave and mug more drunks. While the Slavers and the Faithful fight, the Cathayans begin to search the tavern known as the Officer's Club (It contains 3 drunks). Puppi falls ooa. On the stair the invincible drunk is knocked down! (He will get back up again...) The pivotal moment! The invincible drunk is ooa! Baghel fails to wound Haroum! Tariq (on the roof that has been removed) is about to make a diving charge to eliminate Kaldoon (who is fighting Babiars at the window, lower left). Once the Manpower Exchange fled, the photo record stops. Post Battle The Manpower exchange fled. Kaldoon survived. Puppi may or may not have died. The Slavers sell 2 drunks for 18 dinars. The un-blooded Cathayans eventually encountered the Faithful. The Faithful got a few licks in, but fled when Mir Sher went ooa. Mir Sher loses an eye. A new Mamluk becomes a hero. The Faithful are paid 19 dinars for their 2 drunks. The Cathayans lose one ninja(?). The Cathayans are paid 23 dinars for 5 or 6 drunks. The Cathayans discover a sale at Ahmed Suk's Fine Mounts and Conveyances.

First upper floor lower right. Second upper floor top of photo. Confrontation! Orcs pour up from the ground floor. The Court of the Ancient One descend from the top floor. Where have all the Unpainted gone? Post Battle As this was a fight between Chris and Bob, what happened in the bar fight will likely stay in the bar. Bob is reported to have won one of two games. Both games were over before Jim L routed in the multi-player game. In exploration the Court find a Monkey's Paw. One hero rolls on the rewards of the Shadowlord and loses the Paw.

The Second Cohort was called to the Street of Wine Merchants to quell a disturbance. Upon arrival witnesses claimed that a group of foreign sailors had skirmished with employees of the Khalibon Manpower Exchange. The foreigners were clearly at fault, but had fled to the Maze before the Watch arrived. Several foreigners were said to be sore wounded, but the only fatalities were an un-known eunuch employed as an animal handler by the Manpower Exchange and a foreign priest of some blasphemous cult. Post Battle The Cathayans fled with three heroes, a Holy Man hired sword and several henchmen out of action. Two heroes were hardened and the other fully recovered. The Holy Man died. No henchmen died. The Cathayans found a Map of Old Al-Haikk in a looted vendor's stall. The Slavers won a decisive victory. They purchased a House in the Arabyan Quarters. An experienced eunuch died. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Knives in the DarkA Lamentation - playtable wrote:

SLAVERS: One dog does not go OOA so my warband wakes up but can’t do anything with Orcs everywhere and no weapons. So they stand still for a turn to re-arm.
ORCS: Arrows whiz by, Wizard spell-shoots hero, Fathi on balcony and takes one wound off. Chargers take slave, Curley, OOA Slave, Moe, stuns his charging orc with his daggers 2nd dog holds out against the Orc boss again. Ogre holds out. Me vs Bob again (the others are doing a 3-player game). The fight took place during the day, Thieves Quarters. Slavers deploy 1st, Orcs have some special infiltrators.
My boss wins the shooting contest with the under-skilled, infiltrating, orc on top of the UPS building. Slavers leave dog and slave on south but most go to north.
Dog charges, goes OOA. Slave charges, knocks an orc boy down.
Big melee occurs between corners of walls and slavers are kicking butt, lots of good rolls.
BUT, rout since still outnumbered Slave #2, Larry, died Nabil, the Overseer, who started out as T4 but got a chest wound the first week, got another chest wound this game. He is now T2 with Resilient (T3 in HTH). Probably won't last much longer.

| Week Four--Martyrs to the FaithPlayers and Warbands:Andrew--Cathayan Pyrates (Sartosa) Bob--The Unpainted (Savage Orcs) Chris--Lhamian Vampyres (Khemri) Jim L (playtable)--The Kalibon Manpower Exchange II (Relics Slavers) Jim S (Von Kurst)--The Faithful (Relics Ghutani) The Tale of Terror in the DarkA Sneaking into Town variant of Breakthrough It came to pass that in the early hours of the sixteenth day of Hadukannaš in the fourth year of the reign of the Caliph Ali ibn Hussein, the Emir Haroum, known as the Wanderer, did commit the Tribe to the defense of the district of Al-Haikk known as Boulaq. The Mamluk Tariq was the first to feel the Terror. The Mamluk guarded the foot bridge over the canal known as The Unspeakable Perfume. Jackals' howls alerted the sentry, but his diligence was for naught. The Terror swept out of the darkness. A cruel whip struck Tariq down before he could sound the alarm.
Next to feel the bite of the whip was Hassan. Again the sentry was alert and on guard, but the Terror enveloped him in darkness and he knew no more. Hassan did not fall in vain, the Holy Man Al-Ghazali clearly saw the jackals that accompanied the Shadow. The Holy Man shouted in a loud voice and all of the Believers nearby were alerted.
Alas with most of the sentries overthrown, the Faithful could not contain the invasion of the Undead alone. The Believers were overwhelmed before reinforcements arrived. The Terror moved on into the City on its unholy errand.Post Battle The Faithful inflicted no casualties on the Lhamians. None of the Faithful succumbed to their wounds, however. And a Hired Sword returned a favor, adding a Pit Fighter to the ranks.

| Not dying does beat the alternative. ______________________________________________________________________________________ The Second Tale of Orcish ThievesA reprise of the Yeggmen scenario Emir Haroum had secured his treasure in the United Pirate Shipping building. Unlike the miser Arem Shah (may his bread ever be moldy), the Pirate Shipping building featured a strong room on the upper floor. Surely thieves would have a more difficult time looting the Tribe's treasures from an upper floor.
The Mamluk Majed was in charge of the night watch. With him were the veterans Tariq and Farid. The night was dark, but the guards were alert and ready. When the orc rushed from the darkness Tariq met his charge with drawn scimitar. The Mamluk easily parried his opponent's clumsy blows, but wounding the tough orc warrior proved harder. Tariq bellowed the alarm. Farid and Majed hurried to his aide, as did the entire tribe who boiled out of the nearby inn armed and ready to fight. Alas Tariq was struck down by sorcery before the Tribe could reach him. But his attacker fell under a flurry of blows from the vengeful Ghutani.
Once the first orc fell the tribe rushed toward the Orcish shaman, eager for his foul blood. Another orc bodyguard fell before their scimitars. But before the tribe's vengeance could reach the shaman, he was joined by a huge Ogre Maneater, who offered to save the shaman for a bite of manflesh.
To add to the tribe's consternation, the rest of the Unpainted attacked from the north of the UPS building. Killing poor Farid where he stood. The Ghutani tried to rally, but the orcs seemed to attack from all sides. The Unpainted Ogre Maneater arrives to save the shaman. The rest of the Unpainted Tribe approach from the north as well. Post Battle Farid died. The Tribe do not make enough money to replace him, but do roll the result Loose Lips to increase the NEXT game's income. The Black Market supplies one Rabbit's Foot. The orcs may have lost a boy. They make lots of money and discover the Entrance to the Catacombs...

Darkness was my problem. Ogre fell down twice along edge of board and blocked 3 others from moving.
1 dog , slaves, overseer, and a eunuch went to the center and ended up back tracking.
Fathi II charged the Vampire and was taken OOA by her whip before Fathi II could swing. same turn, Baghel, the ogre charged some evil dude and was taken OOA. Other dog diving charged a wight and knocked him down, but he got back up and took the dog OOA. Vampire then charged Rahbert (Aka Bob, Caravan Guard#3) and beat him up. Really wanted a crate but routed instead. Fathi II missed the next game with an arm wound. Bob, Caravan Guard #3, suffered Madness. He is now known as the Frenzied One. The one who charged the vampire and got taken OOA with a whip. He is ws5, T5, and never got to strike a blow.
On another note, Aaghaa al Khaldoni, the Slave Merchant, got a 2nd wound. As did Nabil the Overseer. Yea. Baghel the ogre, has gotten Ld and I.
