PostSubject: Making a start on the terrain for my 3`x2` board    Making a start on the terrain for my 3`x2` board Icon_minitimeTue 27 Jan 2015 - 16:12

Hello,

Lets start with an admission, I have been gaming for 27 years and I have not built any pieces of terrain since 1987, when I made a three level square hill painted with emulsion paint.   I have tended to buy everything that I have needed and never enough.  I have decided to change that though, I picked up a 3x2 notice board as the basis for my corner of Mordheim.
Now onto my questions; how many buildings do you think I should I be trying to cram into this small space?  I was thinking about making my cobbles from scraps of plastic that I have, is it an insane idea?  I am feeling a little daunted, so is there any advice that you would like to throw my way?

Thanks for your help,

David

here's some advice. Don't do the whole board right away, it will be a stupendous task and you will not enjoy it enough.

instead, go at it bit by bit, build some ruins, ad some details to the board, paint a bunch of it up, build some more buildings, test out what you've built and see if there's anything you like or dislike about how your scenery works in game situations. then work those experiences into your new buildings and test them out again. - if all else fails, you can always cut up some of your previous projects and make it work that way, but it saves you time and tears to test while building, even though it won't look as cool as a fully painted crammed table, it's worth it!

and have a look through the scenery threads here to see what has been built, and has worked for others, and how to achieve your goals.

4' x 4' is the standard for Mordheim games and I would prefer 4' x 6' for our group. 3' x 2' would still be very fun, but I would emphasize having some good elevations with travel between them.

I made a start today, I thought I would try something simple, a ruined arch, so far so good.  I am using corrugated card, I have a tonne thanks to Christmas, so it is a cheap way to develop my skills.  I am trying to decide whether to face it with some thin card to hide the corrugation or to just use textured painted.  I will try both and see what looks the best.

Well, here is picture number one of project ruined arch, more will follow when they do.

Good start thumbsup

I like using all kinds of materials for scenery. I am especially drawn to cheap and readily available. Cardboard is a great place to start as it is everywhere.

LOOKIN' GOOD! That is a nice start. I've never tried card board, so at least you'll be spared any advice from moi. Be warned: making terrain is highly addictive...have FUN with your new addiction!   thumbsup

I made a bit of progress today, it was surprisingly fun.

I have not glued it together yet but here is what it should hopefully look like.

That turned out EVEN BETTER than I would have imagined...considering my imagination that is saying something. The decorative stonework adds a nice finishing touch to the ruined walls & arches. GREAT WORK!   thumbsup

I'm glad you're enjoying the terrain making. It really easy an enjoyable & satisfying craft...the fun factor is what has kept me at it all these years.   What a Face

I love working with cardboard because the construction seems to go quickly. Nice work on your first ruin thumbsup

Thanks, I am enjoying the building process. I am going to try and glue it together, seal it with some glue and perhaps undercoat it tomorrow.

First attempt or the work of years of experience, that is a SPLENDID creation. The floral additions give it a WONDERFUL overgrown look....very Mordheim chic. VERY WELL DONE!   thumbsup

I used a Tamiya textured paint, pavement, for the texture.
