Can someone direct me to a tutorial or good reference photos to help me learn how to paint an unrolled scroll that I have a figure holding in his right hand?

I dont have a specific tutorial, but i would do it like this:

if you have basecoated it black, i would do a layer of dheneb stone first. if you dont have this color, just use bleached bone for a few layers.

Then i would cover it with bleached bone and let it dry

I would follow it with a wash with devlan mud

When that wa dry i would highlight with bleached bone, leaving the wash showing on about half the surface

then an edge highlight with 50/50 bleached bone and white

For the text, just try to do some horizontal scribbled lines. individual words and letters are often to much work, and dont look very good anyway.

best of luck to you. if you try it out and then post a pic we might be able to give more precise feedback.

I agree with Moffe on the colours - I use a little less Bleached Bone and no white though as I wanted mine to look really old and dirty...

I also paint the highlights in thin horizontal lines to simulate the creased texture of tatty rolled/unrolled parchment.

I've done quite a few over the last couple of years!!
