| Rifle counts as club! You could include a special rule where upon a successful hit it might randomly fire and shoot the guy holding it in the belly for random laughs! Love the ravenswyrd! | |

| According to published sources, is it not typical for the marauders of Norsca to make used of horses. This doesn't mean they won't mount up on something. I had a few ideas of how to overcome this mobility problem and my favourite one was to get involved in the smuggling of lizards eggs off the shores of Lustria. Having completed 5x conversions for explorers riding cold ones, and managing to paint one, Games Worshop had the cheek to pay Jes Goodwin to sculpt new lizard steeds for the Dark Elves! Jes is one of the best designers on the books in my humble opinion. It turned out to be impossible for me to switch my mounted warriors to the new cold ones because my models are so heavily customised with baggage/supplies. The new models are also too slight of build for burly marauders to be hacking around on, so I decided just decapitated one of the lizards. I replaced its head with my favourite component from the new model. The new lizard head is looking way more dynamic and it looks more Jurassic Park! A gold star goes to anyone who can identify the young woman who is hitching a ride on the cold one to the right... Regards, Stu. | |

| My guess is the Slave Chick from Asdrubael's Flying Thingy. I concur on Jes Goodwin's sculpting abilities. The new head looks REALLY good, AND gives the group/unit a bit of variety. Nice bit of conversion & painting, VERY WELL DONE! | |

| Yeah those new cold ones are some of my favourite GW minis, so well made! However (with my deepest apologies for being so anal) how are you justifying their survival in the icy North?
Am I just reading too deeply into it?

Really? When I've painted lizard number 2, lizard number 1 is marked for a head-swap too! - Quote :
However (with my deepest apologies for being so anal) how are you justifying their survival in the icy North? 1. Cold ones live in Naggaroth. It is bloody cold there. 2. C L Werner's splendid (I'm on page 50 and it's sick) new Warhammer novel Blood for the Blood God describes a region of the Northern Wastes where the Tsavag & Muhak marauder tribes hunt, known as the Prowling Lands, where huge lizards called zhaga are encountered in the ravines of this cold harsh landscape. | Fair play! (I really know relatively little about the GW universe) I was gonna say that there are some theories to suggest that some dinosaurs were endothermic anyway so you've got the back up of (at least a part of) the scientific community as well! And yeah definitely go for the head swap, so much nicer!

| Oh yeah definitely, I always like to try to justify things like that for myself as much as possible though and I was seeing if anyone else's minds worked in the same way! Deaf head on over to the Battle Reports and Fluff section for more of this kind of thing! | |

It is not. A clue would be that this is the mistress of an extremely famous fantasy character who wouldn't be too pleased to find her cruising around on the back of a marauder's scaly ride. - Quote :

Marauders on cold ones is the way forward. These are my Skeggi explorers who sail around in a longship. They take these trusty steeds on tour with them. - Quote :
Getting plenty of love on the forum Stu, nice to see some of these conversions finally making it out of the grimoire... I should post up the latest conversions so as folks can kick my ass to paint them. A new marauder seer, plus a couple of Norse marauders. Oh I guess now the putty work is completed on the Skaeling chieftain, he should be looking to get a (long due) lick of paint. Regards, Werekin. B-)

| COOL! A VERY nicely done model & VERY well painted. My only crtique [no offense intended ] is that, being a model sled, it MIGHT look better on a snow base. Other than that, WELL DONE! | |

| I've experimented with a wide range of basing materials.
I haven't been totally convinced by 'popular' snow flock. The effect and the look is not something which I have found to be totally convincing. I doesn't look real and especially in great quantities, well it just looks like an unworked/incomplete modelling effort. When used sparsely there is a greater impression of reality.
There is a white/blue/grey flock mix which I discovered. You can see this on the base of the sled and my other Norse models.
While this does not emulate the look of snow in a completely satisfactory fashion either, I like it. My interpretation of the material was that it can be used to represent snow, melting snow, or blasted wasteland. Each of these is common terrain for marauder tribes which is enough for me.
There opinions are just my personal preferences really.
I forgot to finish painting the slate/rock on the base of the sled before the shots were taken DeafNala, whoopsie.
Regards,
Stuart. | |

| This is my snow method. Our Fearless Leader Tom has a nice tutorial about his method under his Autumn foliage title.
- The areas I intend to have snow I do with blue sand [natural color sand is also okay]. This is AFTER the ground cover sand has been applied.
- I then do a wash over the blue sand with a light blue [Baby Blue]. The blue undercoat adds a cold effect.
- AFTER the mini has been otherwise completed AND a protective spray finish applied, a coat of a slightly watered down 50%white paint/50% tacky glue is applied over the blue sand [NEATNESS COUNTS! ].
- A mix of equal parts Snow flock [I use Woodland Scenics] & Hudson & Allen Slush is sprinked over the white paint/glue areas. Blow excess off & lightly brush off any that gets where it SHOULDN'T be, like on the mini.
The Hudson & Allen Slush has tiny Mica chips in the mix which add a sparkly effect to the "snow', which is why it's applied AFTER the protective finish. The H&S Slush ALSO has a bit of powder glue in the mix which will react to the water in the paint/glue coat for a stronger coat & necessiates the removal of the mix from unwanted spots. Additional layers CAN be applied for greater texture or depth. You never know; you MIGHT like the effect.

| Unfortunately nothing with snow, YET. However, there are a few threads with my stuff floating about. The best photos are of some terrain I did for Aston in the Gallery Section, & my D&D Horrors in the Fantasy Shout It Out section. Also in the Terrain Section I have The Tree, in Miniature Gallery Thunder Road Night Goblin Style, & in Painting & Modeling a WIP of my Night Goblin /Uber Goblins: the Red Brotherhood. The latter have photos taken with my Demonically Possessed Camera from HELL!They MIGHT be worth a peek merely to determine if you should reject any of my suggestions off hand [which I'd recommend ]. | |

| Oh, wait a second, Werekin, did Thrud the Barbarian ever have a female sidekick that GW did a model for? Failing that, is it some Conan model?
By the way, the Norse are looking very, very cool!

This earns the gold star! Hell yes, one of the Thrudd releases came with female companion. My photographer friend Bob even recalled the miniature from his old collecting days. Regards, Werekin.

| Ha ha! I can't say that I knew it for certain, but I definitely have a vague recollection of seeing the model myself one time, years ago. A friend of mine has the Thrud model, so I guess it must have come with that.
A gold star - cool. If I get more, I should start collecting them...
How are the Skaelings coming on, by the way? They're looking fantastic so far, and they are making me want to start my Norse warband RIGHT NOW!

| Hey folks. A bit naughty to post unfinished work. Forgive me as Cianty and I are entrenched in assembling the you know what download. Before xmas I signed up to play in a Path to Glory campaign at GW Poole. Having read the rules I wasn't impressed by the system so instead I started using marauders bits to convert some basic henchmen for my warband. I ended up totally customising these marauders. My first two Norse warriors are based on the 2x characters seen in the Skeggi artwork from White Dwarf #309. I had a lot of fun with these and when BTB goes live they will receive modelling putty treatment and a lick of paint. First though, I will be painting two completed hero conversions. These being the Warlord which was previewed (I've done some more modelling work on this man mountain) at the beginning of this thread, and an as yet unseen Marauder Seer who has been gifted by Tchar... Regards, Werekin. | |
