When exactly are you defended when being shot at you ?

I know the standard ruel....if part of the body is behind obstacle then you count as defended...fine.

But here the tricky part:

1)
Are you also defended when being shot at you and the edge of a building who is 5 inches away from you is giving you the cover ?


2)
Boman on higher level shoots at hero that is partially covered by building and also partially covered by one of his henchmens standing in front of him.

Who gives here the defended status ? The building or the henchman ?
The reason I´m asking is the following one.
If you miss your target by 1 you hit the obstacle which is giving you the defended status.
This would meand to hit the henchman if he is giving the defended status.

That´s exactly the purpose of the question.

I'm pretty sure:

1) Yes
2) Both. I'd say roll for which one you hit.

We play that the defender gets to claim what he is taking cover from. Sometimes this means that cover will be claimed from an enemy model in the way, but this has not led to either any unreasonable, unflavourful, or unfun situations.

Something only counting as cover if the defender claiming for it tends to smooth the game's progress.

Aye, we play defender chooses his own cover as well.

We play it as it's the closest cover that risks being hit instead.
