| This thread is dedicated to WIP scenery for the Border Town Burning setting. Enjoy! We start off with... Gaming table: The Cathayan borderlandsThe borderlands comprise of black forests with rotting trees as well as wide marsh land. Because of the marshy ground some of the few Cathayan people that live here have built their houses on stakes and at a few places large lake dwellings can be found. On the firm ground there are ruined temples of Cathayan civilisations that escaped the borderlands long time ago.
--Cathayan borderlands description (from the Border Town Burning supplement) I wanted to make a table for the Border Town Burning setting that represents the wooded area of the Cathayan borderlands adjacent to the Northern Wastes. The mix of grass and mud would make it suitable for the Empire in Flames setting as well. What you see here are two 'Styrodur' boards with a torn grass mat glued onto them. I used a mix of water and wood glue (good old Ponal) for that. The rest of the table was painted with that said mix and then I spread fine sand over it. The snowy area is made with spackling compund (good old Moltofill). The ground was painted black with Pelikan PLAKA (because it's cheaper than Citadel colour) and then dry-brushed with Dark Flesh, Bestial Brown and finally Bestial Brown/Bleached Bone. The table is not done yet as I will add more grass of various colours to it to make it look more natural. The snowy area will be painted white and then covered with modelling snow. Originally I was going to add some bigger stones to the table but then realized that this would make the various scenery pieces harder to move and position so I decided to keep the table flat and create more terrain pieces instead. Thanks for watching. I'll keep you posted.

| Bravo. Quite a work of art you're putting together there. I really like it. Can you take some close ups of the snow, dirt and grass? I'm extremely interested in how you made the snow. | |

| i'm looking forward to seeing this progress. I'm desperately wanting to make a board like this, but I have no space ofr it, and if i get a place with space i'll have no cash to make it.
that, and I can't get the right sort of foam anywhere near where I live or work.
I'm guessing the building on top will be some kind of pagoda. Is this correct?

I think Stu took the photos with his mobile phone. Considering that I think they are quite ok. I'll force him to make proper pictures when they are done, though. - Ashton wrote:

Ha, me neither! He did tell me about a mountain scene for caravans to go through with ambushing warbands. At least I believe to remember something in that direction. - thatirwinfella wrote:

I know this problem very well. I'm also running out of space and my girlfriend is not very pleased with all the scenery pieces laying around the living room. - thatirwinfella wrote:

Heck, I wish I knew. I looks like it could. I'll ask him and let you know. This reminds me.. I need to post some pictures of my Crimson Tower. The first floor is already done.

| In answer to a question posed here, the building is some sort of monastery/watchtower. One of our crew has been working on this. The shape is octagonal, as this was a popular oriental design in a library book which was thrust under my nose at Vets night.
One of my crappy shots is supposed to demonstrate that a section of the lower mountain can be removed, thereby making the game-board interactive, and allowing models to go 'underground' in the name of a 'Mordheim Quest' experience! I have a complete set of painted Warhammer Quest doorways and room tiles (normally used for Dungeon Bowl) to expand and compliment this feature.
If you are lucky Mad Bob might take some proper shots this week and upload them here.
I have just spent £17 on a tin of water-based emulsion (similar shade to Shadow Grey) paint to undercoat the completed 3-D terrain board, so watch this space folks...
Regards,
Werekin. | |

| See...this is why I don't like looking at forums some days. I can't go anywhere without being inspired in some way to add ANOTHER project to my list.
Everything is looking great so far. Now if I can just hold off on adding another 2x4 section to my table...

I thought you were going to say, something along the lines of: There's always a picture of some crazy guy having way to much fun building terrain... and I'm stuck in this box pretending to work... lol I think that week4 pic is my favorite though. Can't wait for the new pics!

| MORE, MORE,, MORE PHOTOS! There, that says it all. Well, may be a word or two more would be in order. I can hardly wait to see how that hideous Effigy of Gork in week 4 turns out, erm.... OOPs., sorry that's some ones head. The mountain terrain, tower, & underground sound great, & from the WIP pics this is going to be a many-time-visited spot. Und Ve Haf Vays Of Making You Post Der Pics! | |

| Those are awesome! Thanks for posting. I really like that board. It looks like it would be a great "Warband(s) vs endless week hoards" type game. (althought I'm sure you have a purpose for making it, so I'm excited to hear about it!) I got the jitters. Good work Look forward to the next post! | |
