PostSubject: A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy)   A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) Icon_minitimeSat 20 Sep 2008 - 20:00

I recently found myself with a couple of weeks paternity leave and somehow managed to find time to put together a few buildings for Mordheim while the little bugger was sleeping so I thought I'd post some pics.

I'll warn you now though; I'm am to digital photography what Alexander the Great was to the knot making industry...

This is the first piece of terrain I ever built (I know, I came late to terrain bilding) about a year ago. It still isn't finished but should be painted soon along with the others. It's just a simple two storey house built out of foamcore and cereal box for the roof. I used polyfilla on the walls and worked it with a matchstick to get the rough stonework effect.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 24ab3d9c7898b6228abd5e111dcff5d73g

I didn't think to put a gable end on when I first built so I just added one out of a spare bit and it's a little to shallow.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 8f4e8b5ad6377596606d91ae4ea227633g

I still need to mark out the flooring on the inside before painting.

Next up is the second building I made, a lot more ambitious than the first. The Hand of Glory Inn was a location in an old WFRPs campaign I ran so I decided to recreate it.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 9f7d65b72e9e7f2998a9f96081f8dbd93g

I need to fashion the sign still and use polyfilla to give it a plastered sort of appearance. And, of course, paint it.

The stairs worked out quite well in that you can slide a base under the tread meaning models can stop halfway up the stairs (useful for dwarves).

The lower set of stairs are also removable (and missing in the next pic) which gives a little variety.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 3caa9bf273b98e75d8b14e44d203e1b53g

My third building came about because my son, Jordan, wanted a prison so I decided to make an old style gaol.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 2d0a9a9b61f1b579b8688fd7405d7c433g

Unfortunately the base is lifting because of the boards I laid down inside.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 319ef4b6020e14e98940b4dd9d3433163g

The cell (on the right) is going to have a skeleton on the floor under some rubble once it's painted up. Again, that was Jordan's idea.

Finally we have the tenement block which got slammed by a meteor to give that 'Stalingrad' look:

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 0e689051e1683bafd0570abafe96f1b13g

I still need to finish the window frames on the front and add in the timbers. I quite like the balcony at the top but think it would be suicide to actually put a model there.

A Fistful of WIP (Pic Heavy) 2997af66e2348a807b24235502c857443g

You can also see some of my unfinished Skaven (the Squeeking Death) milling around the sidelines.

Anyway, that's what I've got at the moment. I'll post more pics as they near completion.

wow, that is a very good first building! the roof is not too steep to put a model on so it has function and aesthetics.

I like your apartment buildings and it's balcony. I don't think it would be suicide for a model to occupy the balcony in a game. I have always played with the rule that you can't fall over railings when shot.

Nice buildings in progress man, If your ever stuck for some buildings check out the scans from the box set in a thread i think in this section, simple enough to throw up in half a day if you use some balsa and foamboard.

Liking the prison, any chance of a closer pic, and don't worry my photo skills are like an elephant and bull in a china store arguing about the costly items.

aka really really bad!

Cheers dudes. I really want to get them painted myself but I'm more concerned with building enough terrain that I don't have to rely on stacks of DVDs to make up the rest. desperate

I'm putting together some ruins similar to the stuff Tom put on his blog which should be nice and modular and then I'm going to build some more stuff from my WFRPs game: The Bader-Meinhoff Brewery and Sturm & Drang's Pie Shop (I know, I've got a problem with cheesy names; just ask my Skaven). Twisted Evil

The no-falling-over-railings would make it more viable but I always imagined it like the shootouts in a Western so people will be crashing ot of windows and the like. I'll give it some thoght though and I'll try and organise some more pics of the gaol.

Thanks for all the praise guys, I'm now even more eager to get them finished and painted so I can clear the CD and DVD cases from the table and only have proper scenery.

We had a game yesterday between the Reiklands and Dwarves which was very interesting and pushed me to build more terrain up. I may well write up an AAR of the game as it was very enjoyable to watch/referee.

After the game I sat down to work on the ruins and managed to get some OKish pics (if you ignore the harsh glare).

I can't wait to get the pentagram room painted so I can break out my Tamiya Clear Red and get it nice and gory. I'm also tempted to carve an altar and place it at one end.

The glue on the pentagram room was still drying when I took the pics; hence the red and white pinheads which are holding it together until it goes off.

Hey KingSkin,
that looks like some pretty terrain pieces you have there. And your son had a great idea with the jail. I haven't considered this for my terrain, but I'm going to add this to my To-Do-list. cyclops
And the ruin with the pentagram is great as place for dark rituals of a possessed gang. PErhaps you can write a special scenario for it? What a Face

Naked women are always a bonus! Harpy

And I suppose my good lady can't complain if I use the internet to research them beforehand... bounce

I was thinking about doing a well filled with body parts for another piece of scenery but I could easily combine the two ideas. I've got a spare box of skellington sprues lying around somewhere so I may have to get busy with making the room look like the sort of thing Clive Barker dreams about.

Actually, what with Mr Barker batting for the other team and all I probably don't want it to look like his dreams. Embarassed

Hmmm. Skaven come from the sewers. It would make sense to build some sort of sewer related terran to give them an active hideout. Nothing underground though (my board couldn't handle it currently) so maybe something more like a central pumping station (or it's medieval equivalent) would be more in order.

Hmmm, I think I'll do some research and add it to the list.

Thanks for the inspiration Duce.

Great stuff, I love the big open buildings. When I make my buildings I try to make sure my big clumsy hand can reach in there with a miniature! About the balcony, I've noticed that anything which takes more than a couple turns to get to rarely get used (unless there's wyrdstone to be had! ), and our group doesn't seem to mind risking return fire for a good shooting vantage! Can't wait to see some paint jobs!

Well skaven love burrows right? so make a house with a mound of land in it with a hole, then its like one of their tunnel networks around the city

or make a guarded small mound (Can attempt to draw it if your unsure what i mean) and use them maybe in special engagements where the skaven travel through them.

That's a very nice idea. I really like the idea of a tunnel emerging in a house.

In the WFRPs campaign I ran the Skaven were the primary enemies and undermined the entire town with Warpstone bombs, planning on levelling it like a demolition crew.

Now I've got in mind a wrecked cottage with a little garden outside. Big mound in the garden with a tunnel emerging and a defunct Warpstone bomb in the house.

I think that's jumped to the top of the to-do list.

Cheers dude.

Interestingly, in the last game between the Dwarves and Reiklanders someone placed a chunk of Wyrdstone on the balcony. One poor Beardling was sent up to get it (luckily it was covered in ladders or he would have been stuffed). Five rounds later and the prize was in sight. Except that a marksman on the other side of the battlefield (after missing repeatedly) finally zeroed him in.

It was amusing for everyone apart from the Dwarves...

THERE NOW, the Temporary Intrusion of Post Eating Daemons HAS subsided [tempoarily at least Suspect ] AND it's once again safe to post words of Wit & Wisdom [& my comments too Suspect ].

WOW!
You've spend your paternal leave WELL! I REALLY like ALL your nice, new buildings. The Tavern is my favorite; tying it into your RPGing is VERY cool. The Gaol is an EXCELLENT idea [kudos to your son thumbsup ], AND the buried Skeleton WILL be a GREAT little bit of detailing. LOVE that balconey!

That, if memory serves me correctly AND it RARELY does Suspect , covers pretty much what was said in my Daemon Chow post. NOW some new thoughts:
An idea for the Skaven Lair without resorting to doing up the Entire Sewer System of Mordheim; make a hollow, raised base for one of the larger building with the building being removable AND add a sewer grate for subterranean access & the trappings of Skaven occupation. I did this with a couple of commissioned buildings; it worked out REALLY well both from an aethetic feature & from a gaming perspective.

BTW ANYONE you remembers/knows who Clive Barker & Robert Vaughn were/are IS my kind of guy; you have my condolences Suspect .

Yeah, I've been busy Nala, I had to find something to do at home when I had time to myself or I would have gone insane watching daytime TV.

I really like the raised base idea, I'll have to source some thick foam board and give it a go. If I do it right I can have the mound above lead into the tunnels below.

By the way, it gets worse than just Robert Vaughn and Clive Barker. If I hear the names Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G Robinson in quick succession I get altogther too excited.

Damn, I've just excited myself for no good reason.

I started making "standard" size bases for my buildings using 3/8" fan foam board; i.e., I mount the structure on a 10"X10" square AND leave a spot in the paving stone to plug in the structure or whatever terrain piece seems appropriate. With the raised "basement" areas, I make a lip of stonework arount the top to secure whatever piece is plugged in. It gives a bit of multipurpusing to the thing.

The fan foam is COOL because its 2 ply, SO...I can cut out one layer & make a sewer grate/trapdoor that is flush with the paving stones.

On the Esoteria: with me, I got to see as regular TV fare ALL the REALLY great & REALLY old flicks when I was a lad. It had a CERTAIN effect on my developing mind. I tend to hoard TRULY useless information in preference to things that MIGHT ACTUALLY have an impact on the realities of life. I'm a Faye Raye freak among other things. Suspect

That sounds great, I've got a really good image of this structure in my head now. I think it needs to be a bit of a maze-like building for the rats to feel comfortable in it so I'll have to sit down tonight and start sketching it out. I quite like the idea of making it in two pieces as well so it can have different layouts each time it's used. If it ends up as big as I'm currently imagining it to be it'll need to be able to be divided into two sections so it doesn't dominate the board every time it's used.

I guess this means Antonocetti's will be getting an order from me after I get paid...

Do you have any pics of the terrain you've built? You definitely know what you're talking about and I'd like to be able to shamelessly steal your best ideas.

Fay Wray's going back a bit for me, I was always more for Raquel Welch or Kate O'Mara from the Hammer films. I know exactly what you mean about watching old movies on TV and storing useless facts. That sounds like a blueprint for about half of my childhood.

ALAS, the Mordheim stuff I've done were commission pieces, AND, considering I can't quite get my patron to drop off the E-Bay $s I've earned, the possibility of getting him to take some photos to post is rather poor. Suspect

HOWEVER, I'm doing a building for our own matt. I'm SURE he wouldn't mind having an extra piece of terrain included, AND might be coaxed into taking a photo or two of the results. Stay tuned for a Fast Breaking matt Reaction!

just wanted to point out that there are several minis from diffrent manufactors out there, that would suit very well for a captured women or ritual victim (even nude ones - don't ask where I knwo this from Very Happy Rolling Eyes )

in regards to the maze maybe use wood, so the skaven have made a maze to make sure people don't find the borrow.

Also a giant hampster wheel close by inside the building next to a small skaven armoury might be funny. like a small HQ where they store loot and weapons.
