Alternative would be to pick up a sheet of cobble-effect plasticard from a local model shop and just glue it on.

I like to use the Vynl mats that are used for Christmas villages. Dept 56 makes it in rolls / sheets etc. If you google search for Dept 56 Cobblestone you should see what I mean. The rolls are easy to cut, and hold paint well. and you get a 3' sheet for like $10 +/- if you search craft stores.
They have far more selection in round bases than square but still, $1 a base for scenic bases is pretty reasonable. I'm not sure I'd do a whole fantasy army in it but for a warband? That's not bad overall.
