For me, this was my 3d game ever. My buddy has been playing for years, but has been away frmo the game in over a year. Being there is a campaign planned to start in a few weeks, we decided to get a practice game to shake out all the rust. Good thing we did.

Anyway, my buddy and I are both playing Marienburg for this campaign. We set up with 600 points, as if this was our first game of the campaign. We rolled a Surprise Attack, in which I became the defender and my buddy the attacker. Unfortunatly for me, only my 3 Xbow marksmen and 1 of my Champs with bow made it to the board. My other Champ, my 2 young bloods, my capt, 2 swordsmen and worrior with bow where too busy drinking Ale at the local pub exchanging war stories.

My Xbows took the high ground in the buildings, and my Champ took cover behind a wall far away from the attackers starting edge. GAME ON! My buddy, his name is Sal, started ALL his 10 troops together and bum rushed me all on 1 side. Scary to see soo many men rushing at you. He had full characters, and all 5 of his other guys were swordsmen! He had no shooting to cover his men...which was a bad thing.

I had a great time hiting his men time after time. He had 4 feet to chase me down and all I kept doing was picking him off. I must have wounded easily over 10 times, but the dice gods would not grant me a 5 or 6 to get his guys out of action. I did however get mostly stunned, which helped me slow the rush down.

I also had a hard time getting my other models on the board. I did manage to get 1 youngblood, 1 champion, and 1 worrior with bow on the table and it happened to be the edge he was hugging. So I decided to sacrifice those guys and place them with in charge distance! I put the bowman a bit further away to shoot them in the back. This worked as it caused 6 of his guys to split off and 4 to come after me. I charged his 2 swordsmen with my champ and youngblood. Bad thing was my champ wiffed and then was put out of action by his swordsman. My youngblood though was able to keep fighting off the enemy for 4 turns, taking a guy out of action and then finally getting put OOA himself. The worrior with the bow was himself put OOA after 3 turns of fighting with 2 enemy champions...I should say that he stunned one of them prior to going out himself.

So now I find myself with 3 men out...having to take route tests and only 2 enemy models OOA for my buddy Sal. Finally after another 5 or 6 turns of running, my models finally reaching the table and consolidating my force (doing some hit and run shooting with bows and dulling pistols) I was able to form a line of 1 champ, 1 capt, 2 swordsmen and 1 young blood while being covered by 3 Xbows.

It worked, we all met in a face to face battle where I lost my other youngblood but I caused him to lose a man and stunned a few others. Sal FAILED the first route test he had to take as I had put his capt OOA with one of my shooters (cant remember who) after scoring a critical 5 roll!!!! He failed with a 9 and the game was over!

It was alot of fun and now we are all inspired to get to playing and build terrain. I am going to buy a 4 x 4 peice of rigid insulation to start making a board this weekend.

Hope this passed your time. OH, and when we figured out who died and who moved on, I lost my worrior with bow, and recovered all my other forces. Poor sal lost a swordsman and youngblood.

A GOOD START!
Congrats on your Victory; WELL DONE! The Surprise Attack is supposed to be one of the toughest for the Defender.

There's NOTHING like a good game to fire up the enthusiasm for painting & modeling, AND, conversely, NOTHING like finishing off some painting or modeling to perk up the desire to play a game. It's WONDERFUL how these things feed off of each other! Suspect thumbsup thumbsup

yep. What saved me was my missle fire. Most kills were from HtH, but the missle fire slowed him down and also demoralised him...forcing him to make bad movement choices.
As soon as the kids are sleeping, its off to my war room...I posted photos of my war room in the workshop photos thread.

Sounds like you got some revenge for the horrible wounding rolls. How did the dueling pistol do? Was it worth the points?
