Rare item rolls

For years our group has made one roll for each hero looking for rare items and interpreted the result to mean that all items of that rarity or less are available for purchase to that hero. If, for example, I roll an 8, that hero can buy any one item of rarity 8 or less.

Now as I reread the rules I am not so sure. It could be read that a hero must first choose what item he wants to find and then rolls to see if he finds it or not. How do all of you play the availability of rare items?

We play that you have to choose the item and then search. If the warrior doesn't find the item then they've wasted their time.

Likewise, choose item and then search. Hope for the best. This makes skills like Streetwise a lot more valuable and the Opulent Coach a bit more tempting.

We do it the same way as RationalLemming. Looking at the availability rules on page 103, the author's intention was pretty clearly that it should be done like this.

+1 for the second version! Played in numerous groups so far and it has never been done differently in either.
