The Uncertain Fate of The Nachtjägers

Da Nachtjägers - Orc Witch Hunters and follows of Sigmork!

Hailing from the dark forests of the Old World and working mostly at night, this small band of eccentric Orcs have dedicated their lives to eradicating the agents of the dark powers.

They hunt vampires, werewolves, ghouls and other forms of undead; warlocks, mages, witches, sorcerers, illusionists, fortune-tellers, seers, necromancers and any users of magic; cultists and worshippers of dark gods or daemons, beastmen, skaven, daemons, mutants and other creatures of chaos; and composers of corrupting music are all subject to their attentions.

The Nachtjägers search abandoned graveyards, dark forest clearings, deserted villages and ruined castles stalking their prey. They follow up any reports of supernatural activity and mercilessly exterminate any unnatural creatures they discover. They make a habit of breaking into crypts and mausoleums to root-out the foul beasts that inevitably lurk there.

Professor Fängmorder and his warband are unusual for Orcs being of dour and sombre demeanour. They take their chosen path very seriously and never seem to laugh or joke or even take much pleasure in what they do. Like all Orcs they are deeply superstitious but they have not taken to fearing the signs of bad luck they see in everyday life, but searching for them and using them as guides to lead them to their preferred enemy.

Excerpt from the journal of Grimmig, Warrior Priest of the Nachtjägers.

7th of Nachgeheim, in the year 13
Last night a comet was sighted falling to earth in the north-west. Professor Fängmorder decided to investigate - we packed up our gear and headed towards it.

8th of Nachgeheim
Met several stragglers on the road today, refugees from a village they called Karlsbad, or Karlsburg or Jarlsburg or some-such. During rigorous interrogation they all told a similar story: the comet fell on the hills above their town and the villagers either fled or they were killed. Some claimed their village has been taken by a Chaos Champion and his warband. Others said it was a Wight and a troop of skeletons. Either way we have work to do - the comet seems to have brought an ill-wind to the village.

9th of Nachgeheim
According to local legend, just over a hundred years ago the vanguard of an Incursion of Chaos nearly reached the town. It was stopped by the local militia but only with the aid of an infernal pact. A sorcerer, who was later burned as a witch, made a deal with a Vampire Lord who sent a contingent of undead troops to battle the Champion of Chaos and his followers - Mutants and Marauders. The Champion was called Lothar Darksun. The old man we questioned to death today claimed it was Darksun who had invaded the village - that the Chaos Champion of old had returned as a Wight with a band of skeletal mutants and monsters.

10th of Nachgeheim
Arrived at the edge of the town to find a cloying green mist hanging over the valley. The place stinks of death. At the Professor's order we advanced along the winding main road, only to be set upon by an undead Chaos warband. It was Lothar Darksun!

Blessed Knight and I played 5 games of Regiment of Renown on Saturday - it was amazing fun, just as good as Kill Team 40k, if not a little better for me as I prefer the setting!

Game 1 was a light skirmish really - both of us were quite cautious as we didn't really know what to expect.
The casualties were quite low on both sides and the game ended when we reached the half-hour time limit.

I killed 2 Dire Wolves and 3 Skeletons - 31vp.
BK killed a Black Orc, 2 Arrer Boyz and a Boy - 33vp.

Round 1 to Blessed Knight!

Woot! Great to see the lads in action again. And I notice you haven't lost your touch...

11th of Nachgeheim
After fatally questioning the owner of a local inn we headed to Grimm Hill in the north-western quarter of the village. There was a tomb on the top of the hill said to contain the bones and artifacts of the ancient sorcerer who instigated the infernal pact - this contradicted the story that he was burned as a witch but we thought we should investigate anyway. It seems Lothar Darkson knew something of the story too. He was already there when we arrived.

Game 2 was more decisive in Blessed Knight's favour but it was still a low-casualty affair, when compared with what was to come!

I killed 2 Dire Wolves - 16vp
BK killed a Black Orc DoW, a Goblin and 2 Orc Boyz - 46vp

First of all i really am impressed by the quality of your figures and surroundings! I thought at first that the journal of the Nachtjägers should be written in Orkish, but the more i read, the more i got the feeling that the scribe is as the smart Gremling (who sings "New York New York")

Also, lovely enemies you gotten yourself! That vampire is superb!

All in all very nice to read!

Hehehe - yes, I know what you mean. I thought about putting the "pre-translation" in as well, but I like the idea of a literate, articulate Orc Shaman. I'm not a fan of reading Orc Speak either - it's okay for the odd bit of "Raaagh! Get 'em Ladz!" speech but as a whole report it's tough going.

The Blessed is (in the fluff) an undead Chaos Spawn and (in game terms) a Crypt Horror. With the emphasis on Horror!

12th of Nachgeheim
We were getting frustrated with being constantly thwarted by the foul undead minions of Darksun - especially the hideous Crypt Horror. The Professor was getting more withdrawn and moody - I could see he was about to kill someone. We really needed to find a way of avoiding the Crypt Horror and attacking Lothar himself. The local chapel had been desecrated but we banked on the residual power of the holy ground to give us some kind of edge. We lured the former Chaos Champion into the chapel's grounds.

Game 3 was a victory to me!

Even though Fängmorder was incapacitated the rest of the Nachtjägers held their nerve, took down Lothar and the Crypt Horror as well as a good swathe of the skeletons. The remaining Darksuns broke and ran!

I killed a Dire Wolf, 6 skeletons, the Crypt Horror, the Graveguard leader and I broke them - 197vp
BK killed my Black Orc Leader, a Black Orc DoW, 2 Orc Boyz and a Goblin - 91vp

Totals:
2-1 to the Darksuns
The Nachtjägers 244vp
The Darksuns 170vp

HOORAY for the RIGHTEOUS GREEN GUYS! That will teach the the Forces of Mostly Deadness to mess with Sigmork's Finest....probably His only at that. COOL report & WONDERFUL photos.

I know this is of topic but can you explain me about your terrain, please? I like it a lot! What was the theme of it? How did you paint it? Thanks! And btw great stuff, as all your work that you post here!

In RofR casualties don't carry over - the Leader gets experience but you start each game with your full list.

13th of Nachgeheim
After the success of the previous day we once more took the fight to the Darksuns in a bid to push them out of the village. Our overconfidence was our downfall.









Game 4 was a slaughter!
The Darksuns pushed back hard and took out all 3 DoW, all 3 Goblins and 3 HenchOrcs. They also got points for Seize ground and very nearly got points for Braking the Orcs - 113vp
The Nachtjägers scored a horrible 0vp!!

I googled regiment of renown and only found the rules for the regiments not for a skirmish setting in
warhammer 8th edition.

14th of Nachgeheim
In the middle of the settlement there was a fenced-in village green with the main graveyard in the centre, surrounded by the strongest buildings. This was to be the killing grounds for the final confrontation. It was here that we had to drive out Lothar Darksun once and for all.

Game 5 - the Battle in the Graveyard
The Witch Hunters tackled Lothar after dealing with his minions and brought him down. The remaining disordered undead afterwards fled.

I killed 2 dire Wolves, 4 skeletons and the Graveguard Leader, a Goblin Seized Ground and the Darksuns were Broken - 150vp
BK killed an Orc Boy, a Black Orc, a Big'Un DoW, my Black Orc Leader and Seized Ground with the Crypt Horror - 127vp

Totals:
3-2 to the Darksuns
The Nachtjägers 394vp
The Darksuns 410vp

Only 16vp difference!

All these games were played between 9am and 2pm - with lots of chatting, rulebook checking, tea drinking and cake eating in between. We laughed a lot at what was happening and we both felt like we had a chance of winning each game and the mini-campaign as a whole. The 8th edition rules play a bit differently to Mordheim but it's a fast-paced and slick game that we didn't have to "fudge" anything to work out what should happen.

Excellent little campaign! Good to see the lads back in action in a gorgeous setting.
