| Hey, I just finished my miniature (yay!) and was taking some experimental shots. As the light is not that fantastic, with the weather being rainy and not having a daylight lamp or anything, the white background is pretty dark. Thus, I wanted to ask if it is allowed to do a colour correction (Tonwertkorrektur). Thanks, Sascha
Thanks for your entry! (and for finding a way to take bright pics and thus avoiding complicated discussions about allowing/disallowing pic treatment, Eli). --Admin Tom

My stupid question... By more than one model... should I send all of them by separate e-mails or in 1 e-mail, and they still count as "separate" ? (I said the question is stupid )?

Whatever suits you best. I think I will be able to understand what you want to submit, don't worry. But please do take separate pics of every miniature under different angles. A "group" picture won't do. _________________

| *thundering voice* THE FINAL DAY APPROACHES!A big THANK YOU to all you guys who have submitted your fantastic works so far! As you know, the competition will close tomorrow, october 3rd 2008 and I will accept entries until 00:00 (i.e. midnight) on that day. After that, the judges will recieve your works as a bundle and the hour of truth will sound We will try to get the results out quickly, but we don't want to rush it. It is the first time we are having a competition on this forum, so I expect some heavy debating going on amongst the judges, behind the scenes (franky, I am really looking forward to all the arguing back and forth! It'll be fun). I am hoping we will be able to announce the winners after october 10th. For those of you still feverishly working on your entries, I wish you the best of luck and am eagerly awaiting your entries * cracks whip* "Work faster!" Cheers, Admin Tom For those interested in "how it works"On october 4th I will send an email to all the judges, with all the entries that were submitted. Each entry will be anonymous and recieve a number for identification. Of course, this is not a perfect system since I know who submitted what and even the judges might recognise some miniatures that have already been seen on this forum, but as a whole, I think it will be more fair. There is also one judge which is not a forum member and thus has never seen any of the miniatures before So at least then there is as much objectivity as one can achieve. Each judge will award 4 things, each one individually. 1st place ( Golden Tom) 2nd place ( Silver Tom) 3rd place ( Bronze Tom) + a certain number of Honorable Mentions for miniatuers that might just not have made it to an award but have still impressed the judges. A miniature that recieves a judge's "voice" for 1st place will gain 3pts, a miniature that recieves a judge's "voice" for 2nd place will gain 2pts and a miniature that recieves a judge's "voice" for 3rd place will gain 1pt. Honorable mentions will not produce any points for the entry, but will be kept track of. So the more Honorable Mentions you get, the closer you came to an award and the more judges you impressed... still good, right? The winners will then be contacted by me via email, and asked to provide me with a mailing adress should they want the super cool certificate sent to them (free of cost, I'll pay for that). And finally ALL works will be posted in a Golden Tom #1 thread a.k.a the HALL OF FAME. Good Luck Ladies and Gentlemen! _________________ | |

| Thanks for telling us how this works, Tom! I just sent my entry. There's no way anyone involved with this forum cannot smell "cianty" from that model. LOL. Anyways.. I was wondering, with this point system couldn't you not only determine places 1 to 3 but also 4 to say, 8? Maybe that would be good for the losers (like me, he he) that missed the top spots only closely (maybe not me). If there really are like 20 entries then that should be good (whereas with 10 competitors it would be ... not so cool). Jus' 'n idea, y'know... Alright, good luck again to everyone! I am looking forward to a thread with lots of awesomely painted miniatures. | |

I'll tell you why I think this is not such a good idea in my opinion. I have seen the entries, and judging from my first impression, they all range from good to excellent. In fact, I think that it will be hard enough to decide on places 1, 2 and 3, which will only be divided by a little tiny something, just so we get a ranking, because they are all so good. I feel it would be a little unfair to rank everything after position 3. It would be like saying "You're a 5 so you are better than a 6", which in reality is not true. How can we say that? You can do that in sports, in the sprint discipline for example, where quarter of seconds differences allow exact rankings. But in an artistic contest, everything is more subjective. Maybe for 20% of the judges you deserved Silver although you got bronze. That's just a subjective, human factor (did you or did you not convince the majority of the judges) that is impossible to remove. That's why I would feel like splitting hair if I started ranking below 3rd place. 1,2 and 3rd are already hard enough to decide upon! - cianty wrote:

And stop that defeatism. Duce, the newspaper please! _________________

Exactly. If you can decide between 2 and 3, then you will likely also be able to decide between 3 and 4, especially since I guess more than three entries will get points, thus automatically creating an order of, I don't know, maybe six or seven entries. Okay, I really feel like getting on your nerves if I press on with this and since I don't want to piss off one of the judges this soon , I'll stop it now . It's nothing important to me, you know, I was just wondering. I do see your point that it's hard to pick three out of so many. - Admin Tom wrote:

You are right, it might be possible to create an order from the points. True. But that is besides the point in my opinion, because I think this order, although statistically correct, would hold no information value. That's why I said it would be a little "unfair". Sure, maybe you get 8 points and another entry gets 7. But what does that really MEAN for an outside viewer? I would say a 8pt and a 7pt miniature are equal in quality to me, you see? In another comp, maybe you would have gotten 6 and the other entry 9 points. That's why I introduced those Honorable Mentions, because that way, even if you didn't "win anything", you can still see traces of the judge's appreciation. It is a way for the jury to say "thank you" to the contestant for his effort and participation, even if he didn't make a place. [EDIT]: A little personal anecdote on that topic. I was taking part in a dancing competition. And my partner and me were getting through the rounds of Jive (my favourite dance) really well. For the first time, I was actually being recalled again and again and again. Then we reached the final (an unbelieavable thing for me), and we were 6 couples competing for 3 places. When they handed out the medals, it turned out that I was 6th place, and I was a litte disappointed because my whole team was saying "Wow, you guys did so great! You'll make silver or bronze for sure!". And then an unusual thing happened. The judge walked up to me (a very nice guy) and said: "You know, I had marked you for Gold. But then you went out of rhythm just a few seconds, just when I looked, and so I had to bump you to 6th place. Sorry mate.".
And that made me feel great! That was the honorable mention. I though, if not for this tiny mistake, it would be me wearing that gold medal up there So i went fron disappointed to actually feeling like I broke a personal record. Even if it was only for myself.
There. That's how important Honorable mentions can be! - cianty wrote:

Ow, don't worry, it takes more than that to get on my nerves. Besides, you never piss me off my dear Cianty! _________________

| I think I misunderstood/misinterpreted that honorable mentions system. You once stated that there will be places 1 to 3 and honorable mentions. Then you said that all submitted entries would be posted in that Hall of Fame. I thus assumed that the Honorable mentions categorey was a an euphemism for "the rest". From what I get now, there will be Gold, Silver, Bronze, Honorable Mentions and the rest. Am I right? | |

As always my friend So if you wil, entries will have different "quantities" of honorable mentions. But not a "real ranking". _________________
