PostSubject: Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery   Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery Icon_minitimeFri 10 Sep 2010 - 12:20

Some time ago when I was tidying up my basement I came across a huge box with my old scenery pieces. Instead of throwing them away I decided to give them a chance and the new life after some refurbishment Wink. Bearing in mind the motto "better to fix up than to throw away" I started up the project. In this and the future posts in this topic I'd like to show you the progress of my work.

Let's begin with something designed for "wilderness" settings as BTB or EiF: small hills with some trees and bushes on top.

After retrieving from the basement and before the restoration they looked like this (somewhat worn down and ugly as you can see):

Hill 1:

Hill 2:
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 2

Hill 3:
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 3

Hill 4:
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 4

The process of restoration was quite simple. I repainted the hills totally using the same paints as in case of my wargame board. Then I applied some static grass, moss, bushes and so on.

The finished work:

Hill 1:

Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 1b

Hill 2:

Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 2b

Hill 3:
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 3a
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 3b

Hill 4:
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 4a
Restoration of my old Mordheim/BTB/Warhammer scenery 4b

Next time I'll show you some refurbished stone walls Wink.

I don't think they looked too bad to start with, but your restoration definitely brought those hill pieces to life. Pretty clever using the same colors as your board.

I've shied away from making hills myself as I've had trouble with models falling or sliding off the slope. Any advice on this?

Thanks for your comment BBA!

Indeed, models falling or sliding off the scenery pieces (not only hills) can be annoying. I generally avoid building too steep slopes and I try to be extra careful when placing minis on a creased area, but disasters could happen even on much safer ground, especially when a mini is somewhat shaky due to it's shape and, consequently, center of gravity Wink.

The restoration goes on; today I'd like to show you some refurbished walls and a slightly ruined gate designed for my wilderness wargaming table Wink.

VERY NICE RESTORATION...bringing older pieces up to current standards is also one of my favorite activities. They all turned out TERRIFIC, but I LOVE the way the walls and arch came out. thumbsup

Doing a terraced effect on hills is about the only way I've found that they're workable for gaming. It's one of the concessions you have to make for utilitarian purposes. Suspect

Remember that this scenery is mostly for WFB and I play Wood Elves, who live in those bright, beautiful woods of Loren - we cannot have only dark, dirty ruins Smile

I'm going to be annoying and say perhaps you lost some detail in the repainting? I love the added mosses which are brilliant.

If I may make a suggestion: perhaps a light wash of raw umber from underneath to add shadow and one more colour. Or even better, glue splotches of fine sand to the surface of the rock in places just to break it up a little.

Well anyway that's my two cents.

That is quite a difference...I LOVE the addition of the statue in repose. The more vibrant colors add depth & interest to the piece. VERY WELL DONE! thumbsup
