| Hey everybody! Since a couple of weeks I'm working on some pieces of terrain. It's comming along pretty well, but I want to give the pieces a certain style. I would like to build a pirate town! But, I'm not very sure, what ''things'' do give buildings a piratey feeling.. Can you help me out by telling me what you think? I will make pictures of my WIPs tomorrow, so you can see it. I mostly get my inspiration from the Pirates of the Caribbean. Hope you guys will respond so I can take my buildings to the next level | |

| You might find Rob Jedi's Blog of interest. When I think pirate and town....I think pieces of old ships used to build. Rope, crates, netting, anchors .. Docks, floating barrels, barnacles | |

That is in Blackpool. It's a crappy amusement arcade on the waterfront. It's rubbish really but it looks awesome! (The shark is also in Blackpool, in the Pleasure Beach area)

| Good point.
Thanks Tagantor for starting this thread. We are heading back to Sartosa again and I'm trying to get Playtable to restart his Tortuga project.
Your buildings have all the right details. I would reconsider the tiled roof for the tower. If you make it a flat roofed adobe like the buildings in the Tortuga thread or the ones shown in WbK's post (since they are the source buildings for Playtable's thread), it will be more playable in a game. Those flat roofs with the low parapet make great shooting platforms.
Other than that its down to all the cool props you can cram around and in your buildings-- barrels, nets and ship's lanterns are a good start. We've been using stuff borrowed from Christmas villages, Playmobil and Megabloks ship toys. There are also several companies that sell miniature stuff for pirate theme games. Check cianty's blog for a list.

| @ von Kurst, that's nice! So I saw the tortuga buildings, and I liked them alot! And you're tip about the little things like net's, barrels etc, I think that will take it a step higher and finish it! I quess these buildings I've made are just for practice and for the first games, when I gain some more experience in building, I would replace them with better ones | |

NOT NECESSARILY SO...unlike minis which more or less reach a point of completion, baring stripping off the paint & start all over again, buildings & scenery in general are an ETERNAL PROJECT. There is ALWAYS some little embellishment, addition, modification that NEEDS to be done. Don't scrap the suckers; upgrade them as you gain experience. They're the cadre around which you will build a vast collection of GREAT SCENERY!

| +1 to what Deaf said. I am forever cutting into my old buildings to add or subtract details or just change the style. Or add doors, windows or other entrance points--gamers are so obsessed with USING things. ("This would be better with a window here.") | |

| I also also agree, dont scrap them.
I think they look great so far.
If I could offer a few suggestions.
The walls look a little thin, which might make them a bit fragile. I would suggest doubling up on the cardboard or foamcore to give them a bit more rigidity (Did I spell that right...to lazy to look right now)
Also you really have a good effect going with the plaster / exposed bricks. I think you could improve on this by giving the walls some texture to lend more to the feel of plaster. Two possibilities, light weight spackle, or premixed concrete patch. This can also help to blend the corners of your buildings a bit and hide the joins.
Another simple embleshment you can add would be to give those roof sections a few timbers on the under side. If you dont have or dont want to buy expensive balsa for this, try using coffee stir sticks or long wooden match sticks. I typically can find both of these pretty easy at the local $1 store.
Also adding a few of the above suggested pirate looking items from the thread above, and you got yourself some FINE buildings.

| Thanks guys! @ Horned Rat, I quess you're right about, giving the buildings a bit of structure would be nice! I will definetly get some of these big wooden matches for under the roofs, great idea! | |
