| How do you prime your terrain, black or white? Since I'm a bit of a painter (and got all the art school brainwashing), I think I will go with white, since it is easier to cover with any color. Still I see that a lot of black is popular! | |

| Black for the dark & dirty feel. That said, I quite fancy giving zenithal priming a go. Best of both worlds perhaps? | |

| Because the Citadel and other gamer-centric brands of spray are spendy for the amount of terrain we work on, Inquizitor and I usually go with a Krylon gray or brown (on terrain only, not minis). Works fine, inexpensive, and easy to basecoat with cheap acrylics!
For large pieces, like foam hills and game boards, I get quarts of exterior primer/sealer tinted to a dark color (usually green, dark gray, or dark brown).
For very small pieces, like a barricade or something, I'd just use citadel black primer or something similar. I like how white takes color, of course, but to me Mordheim is all about dirty, dark, sinister, and did I mention dirty? The place got hit by a comet so I imagine there will be a lot of dirt, dust, and other debris around for miles. Thusly pretty much everything gets the dark undercoat treatment, and a decent amount of home-made dirty washes.
I try and reserve my white primer for minis that I like brighter colors for (elves, some dwarves, halflings, richer human factions, etc) or when I want colors to pop a bit more. Whatever color you want works though - it's really a personal preference and it works just fine for anything! The important part is that it seals the surface, and gives your paint something to stick to and help it cover better.

| I prime with cheap acryllic black paint because if you later miss some parts or recesses it blends in, white doesn't | |

| YES...I do a thin coat of black then I dry brush white. It gives you the best of both AND it makes it easier to see details. | |

| Well since I use some styrofoam I won't go with the spray, so I was also thinking acryllic. I might try the black with drybruh. I mean Nala, your by far the oldest here, and most likely the wisest! ^_^ | |

Thanks...I guess. UNFORTUNATELY wisdom does not necessarily come with age...only senility seems to be a certainty. I use acryllis also...the spray is a bit on the pricey side in addition to being a foam killer.

| I have to throw my lot in with Sartori, I use Krylon grey too. Sometimes, I'll do Citadel black and then paint over it to get that "dark and dirty" feel to it. Throw in just a tinge of green for warpstone dust that you can see from only one angle and viola! | |

| The first two sets of boards I made I primed black, mainly because I prime my figures black and I always have cans of cheap black spray paint around. However, in more recent projects I have not primed the boards at all, but rather put a
polyurethane coat on as a sealer afterwards.

| It's like a clear wood sealer (sometimes yellow-tinged). Similar to lacquer, but it's a polymer compound instead of a natural resin-type of material. | |

| I mix it up sometime white, sometimes black, sometimes grey, a couple of time green, and sometimes other colors.
I use white when I want bright and vibrant colors.
Black when I want something that looks a little darker or dirty.
I use Grey or Off-White if I want to paint a sickly human, or something that I don't want to look dark, but not bright and shiny either. It works well in giving that slightly melancholy fee that you can't put your finger on.
I don't use green too often but I have with Orcs and Goblins and it works pretty well. If you wanted to paint something that will be mostly green like trees or grass I would think that starting with a Green primer would be a good start.
I have had people tell me they have used Blue, and Brown, for Space Marines and Skaven and they say it works well. I am thinking that Brown primer would work well on anything that is supposed to be wood, or dirt. In Mordheim I think it would work well. I think blue would work well if you wanted water to look clean, but everything is dirty in Mordheim.
Back in the day GW made a lot more primers and they were pretty good, a little pricey, but good. I kind of miss the options. Granted 90% of the time I would purchase black or white, but it was always fun to pick-up a Bone White Primer, or a Green Primer. Oops I went a little off topic. I mostly switch it up between black and white, with Modheim everything has a dirty feel so I mostly use black.
