A reply by JohnYoung in one of the threads put this question into my head:

DOES ANYONE USE WHITE PRIMER SPRAY on his/her miniatures?

I personally have used it once with disastrous effects, but GW keeps producing and selling it with good success. If anyone uses white primer, please reveal to me the mysterious advantages of such a basecoat, because I really can't paint with that! (and I am VERY curious).

In your opinion, what's better (and for what purpose): BLACK or WHITE? (or any other basecoat colour for that matter...)

My experience is that colors look like crap when using white coat. The only person I know who ever used white coat is a Warhammer High Elf player (High Elfs are pretty white, so I guess it makes sense for them).

Do you remeber Tom? I bought both! But my black is in Vienna so I have to use the white for my 2 new warbands (one sister finished and minotaurus nearly finished)
in fact, I don't care about the undercoating. all my models look like "crap". I'm trying very hard, especially at the minotaurus, giving my best. But without talent...
The fancy looks are due to the fact that amazons and beastmen raiders are from the "chaos side" of mordheim :flower:. thats my lame excuse. anyway. I want to play, not to paint.

Although I've heard that many good painters(talking about Golden Demon etc) use white undercoats, I agree that most white undercoated models of mine look absolutely crappy!

But I've found out that you can make a paintjob which looks ok out of it, if you ink or paint the deep spots(those, which you whould keep black on a black undercoated model) with brown.
You still have a bright colour to paint yellow or red on it, but you also have some shadows where you need them.
Let me hear what you guys think about it Wink

And @Boehm:
I think I would undercoat elves in white, but Empire models definitly not, the newer ones have a quite dark/morbid air, and even the old, "Landsknecht"-models can be painted great on a black undercoat.

I undercoated 2 skavens in white yesterday - we shall see if I can make something good looking with that.
