We are about to embark on a new campaign path using the Lustria, Cities of Gold setting. We've been there several times in the past 8 years but this is the first time I've had internet access. One of the warbands introduced in the setting is Forest Goblins. The goblins have access to giant spiders as mounts and a gigantic spider as an independent big guy--like a troll or ogre--which may be ridden by the leader of the warband.

In the past we have (read I have) used the rules for ridden monsters from Warhammer 5th edition. The ridden model counts as a Large Target, but when hit the shot is randomized between the mount and the rider. A d6 roll of 1-4 hits the mount, 5-6 hits the rider. (the NC update has it 1-2 hits the rider and 3-6 hit the spider, whatever)
Moving back to Mordheim, if the rider is hit and wounded, he rolls on the normal injury chart and falls off the spider if knocked down or stunned (taking any additional falling damage). If he is taken OOA then the spider fights on subject to stupidity.
If the spider is hit it takes wounds as normal until its last wound when it rolls on the injury chart as well. If the spider is Knocked Down or Stunned the rider must test vs Initiative or take falling damage, if the spider is OOA then the rider must test as above or take a hit from the spider to simulate being crushed by the stricken beast.

Its kind of fiddly but the above seems to fit riding a monster better than the Whoa Boy! table. How does the rest of the world play the Gigantic Spider?

Monterous mounts in Mordheim sounds deadly! I can hear lizardmen players calling for carnosaurs already!

I like everything you have proposed with the addition of the one detail. When the riders falls off, you should treat all falls, no matter the size of the mount, as if they were from the same height (2" maybe). This would alleviate any possible arguments over model poses, measuring up to the saddle, and all that!

2 inches sounds good!

Except for the High Elf Dragon Rider warband. They fall from 6 inches and take D3+3 hits...

Hi Von Kurst.

Forest Goblins were re-published in their completeness in the Nemesis Crown campaign supplement for Mordheim. Please refer to this download. This is a revised version which maintains all of the original features of the Forest Goblins warband developed for the Lustria setting. It included the super-sized Spider monstrous mount, on top of the regular Giant Spider mounts already published in Empire in Flames.

There were 2x new monstrous beasts that could be mounted in the Border Town Burning supplement; Temple Dog & Rhinox.

Regarding specific rules for the reactions of mounts, I am not overly familiar with how this works. Cianty, what's the deal here?

Regards

Werekin.

For the ridden animals in BTB I avoided the problem of what to do when a mount is knocked down with a rider on top by giving them the Skull of Iron and Staggered, but not down special rules that cause them to ignore stunned and knocked down results. Problem solved. For the Gigantic Spider (note, not Giant Spider) of the Forest Goblins the question still stands so you have to come up with house rules for this, just as Von Kurst did. Or as in BTB. The current rules don't cover mounts with 2+ wounds.

I concur. This was not information which we supplied in the Advanced Rules section of Border Town Burning, neither has it arisen in an FAQ. We can add it to our FAQ, as a Gigantic Spider, for the same monstrous reason to a Rhinox, would not easily be knocked down.

I would like to FAQ this as a staggered but not down result for such similar purposes.

Cheers Christian,

Stuart.

Personnaly, we found a way to makes mounts more ''attracting'' and advantageous.

We COMBINE wound of the warrior AND the mount together as well as offering all the other advantages (and disadvantages) of mounts.

Mounts are VERY expensive for what they give and the ''whoa boy!'' table is a bit more damaging than the basic injury table. The fact that a skill is somewhat ''required for riders also limit the attractiveness of mounts.

Trust me, even if this looks very powerful, its indeed just fair enough for the price you pay !

I'm not sure what you mean by combine wound? For a Gigantic Spider or for a horse for example?

Simple Smile

If the mount as 1 wound and the warrior 2 wounds, then the whole model count as having 3 wounds.
You never have to roll to see which one is hit as they count as a single model (with the large attribute of course).
Whenever they are splitted, count the mount has having 0 wound left and the rest to the rider (0 in most cases).

When wounds reach 0 then you begin to roll on the ''whoa boy!'' table for injury.

Less dice rolling, less troubles, a single (simple) advantage that gives mounts a fairly interest !

PS : We also added the riding warhorse as a free skill to the bretonnians questing and errants knights ! (they are pathetic for their cost !!!)
