Dream come true...

Hi, my step-dad inherited a small cottage in Oxford, about two years ago. Recently, some builders found a 1775 musket-bayonet complete with scabbard in the wall! And I get to keep it! Whoop-whoop!

Hang on... the musket was ALSO there? Awesome... I thought it was only the bayonet.

It was just the bayonet. I'll see what I can do as to pics (I'm currently in England, where my camera isn't, but I might be able to borrow my granny's, but she's trying very hard to pretend that the bayonet doesn't exist). After a closer examination I've noticed seven (posiblly chiselled) grooves on one of the (three) blades, kill marks? Seven is a lot of kills, possibly too many to be kill marks...

LOL, 'cos she doesn't like 17" blades, prob'ly summat to do with being an old-lady. (Also, remember people are a bit funny about knives in England. A bayonet in England is the social equivalent of an RPG in Texas.)

But it's true, if I walked down the street with it (even in bag) I'm going straight to straw. Keeping it in the house is just about legal (just). Remember, this is the country were under 18s can't buy kitchen-knives.

Quite right too, if you think about the things that British under eighteens want kitchen knives for! (It ain't cooking!)

LOL, but we also can't buy solvents, though GW will sell to me. Just 'cos some twats inhale superglue I can't fix a broken piece of work without getting someone else to buy the glue for me.

... hmmm, well I guess the ability to buy Cadbury more than makes up for that. Cadbury is really hard to get by here (possible, but hard). I have started to have withdrawal symptoms since I left the UK.

COOL! Looks to be a FINE example of a Tower aka Brown Bess style bayonet, The triangular blade BTW is intended to create a REALLY nasty wound that will MAXIMIZE bleeding...sweet, huh?!

I thought the triangular-blade was to allow flex but not bending? Anyways, I must look up if any Oxfordshire regiments recruited in that area, but it will have to wait as I'm tens of miles from the parish records.

PS. I just posted pic on a Bayonet forum (I signed up overy-fast, so I'm not sure when I said I was born, oops), needn't have had to now.

wicked find! and well preserved as well! the only ones I have have been mutilated sadly... out of nescesity though... but still it's soo much better to have the original piece in it's original shape! treasure this!

Turns out it wasn't what we thought it was at all, it's actually from an 1853 pattern Enfield Rifle Musket.

That would explain why it wasn't all pitted. It's STILL a fine little heirloom. I wonder why it was found in a wall...good mystery there.

Yeah, they also said it's quite rare to have the scabbard with it.
