Yellow and orange colors shamelessly stolen from Admin Tom. The bow, arrow fletching and stitching isn't finished yet, but the major areas of color are there.

Any advice on hightlighting the skin (or any other constructive critism)? I've always had beef with elf flesh in the past as I always seemed to use way too much and ruin whatever flesh area I was working on.

Hey thats a nice piece!

You've got an interesting style there, very bold strong colour, yet not really a smooth transition of tones. Normally I'd say use a touch more water to help blend the tones together, maybe one or two more mid tones too. Yet in this case I think it would detract from the impact of your approach.

As for the skin tone, maybe just emphasize the creases a little more with a slither of darker shading. Honestly though I think the lighter tones are fine though.

I'm loving your style.

Depending on whether you want to keep that style or not, I have to suggestions:
1 (if you wan't to keep it): mix some Elf Flesh and Skull White and give the skin another highlight
2 (if you don't mind changing the overall appearance): use Devlan Mud, the painter's best friend. Actually, you can use it on the whole miniature (perhaps Badab Black for some areas (red, brown)). Afterwards, you can highligh with the underlying colour where necessary.

Oh, by the way, the miniature looks pretty cool Smile You apparently have a very steady hand thumbsup

LOOKIN' GOOD for an elf. Nice clean paint job, & a FINE choice of colors. Although it's fine as is, I'd go for more shadowing on the flesh: a reddish brown wash & highlight with the present skin shade; as outdoor types, I think Wood Elves should have a ruddier complexion than their pasty faced High & Dark Kindred. VERY NICE WORK! Keep us updated as you progress with your War Band. thumbsup

Sorry about the "for an elf" comment; that was my Inner Goblin speaking. Deaf Nala Smiley

Great stuff! The photo's quite unflattering though. I think it would look more 'natural' and real in a less-proffesional photo. Don't get me wrong, it does great credit to your photographic skills!

I'd be interested in trying out some delvan mud shading(?). Does anyone know where I can find examples or guides or just pictures?

I'm working on some metal waywatcher models right now but they're much, much more complicated and detailed than the plastic glade guard, and I'm having some trouble doing them with the basic layering (hard to layer in holes my brush barely fits in).

Using washes does not need a tutorial - you just paint it on Smile

Here are some before & after pictures.

Where? I dun see anything! Have I gone blind?!

[edit] I sometimes wish links stood out more from normal text [/edit]

Do I paint it on after I do normal painting or between each layer or whaAAAGH!

Anyway, the layers are very visible because this is the first time I've done extensive paint mixing and I want to colors to be consistent between models so I've done all the layers in easy-to-remember paint combinations (dark flesh:firey orange in 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 etc.). I don't mix very much paint (using citadel paint bottles) at a time and it dries up pretty quick, so I need to be able to reliably remix a color.

Haha, you are welcome Smile I am glad you liked my color scheme. There can't be enough autumn-style wood elves around.

OMG, it looks like an old vidoegame or something, like old DOOM where they tried to put shadows... I am not fond of that paintingstyle at all (I am of the drybrushing shool and drybrushes EVERYTHING) But that looks soooooo COOL!!! I love it!!!
