Two and a Half Week Terrain

THE DESIGN STAGE

I needed some terrain that could be easily transported for gaming at a friend's house and done both on the cheap and quickly.

So I approached making a set of terrain with the following brief:

Transporting
It had to be easy to transport from location to location. I had seen floating around online several images of tables with terrain made from boxes that would then fit into each other for packing up and transporting. This seemed like the ideal approach to the problem.

Materials
It had to be cheap to build with materials being from only what I found around the house. I still had plenty of glue, paint, and scraps of foamcore from building a Fallout inspired table for Infinity the Game. I also stocked up on a cardboard box and cereal boxes that would have otherwise gone to the recycling bin. The only real expenditure was on $10 worth of balsa wood. Materials were sorted!

Time
Construction and painting time had to be at a minimum, so I set myself a goal of getting this all done in two weeks. I tend to find that if you don't set yourself a goal, you may lose interest and the project will stagnate resulting it not ever getting finished. Life kind of got in the way, and the time-frame stretched out to around two and half weeks, which I'm still quite chuffed about.

Aesthetics
It had too look good. I strongly believe that you don't need to use the best materials (or even terrain in kits), or spend huge amounts of money to end up having an awesome looking table. The small details you add and ultimately the paint job will bring the project to life.

Testing out Colour Schemes/Techniques
Ultimately this would be a practice run for the colour and techniques I use for s permanent set of terrain at home later on.

Two and a Half Week Terrain

THE BUILDING STAGE

Two and a Half Week Terrain 2WeekTerrainWIP01_zps0b16a33f
the buildings reduced in base size at 2cm increments (left to right), allowing the building at the far right to fit inside the centre one, and that one fit inside the larger one on the left...

...and somehow it managed to work!

Two and a Half Week Terrain 2WeekTerrainWIP03_zpsbf1707a2
exposed/damage parts of the building which were visible were to made using materials with a little more weight to them (foamcore for walls, balsa for flooring, etc)...

...whereas parts that were not visible I used box cardboard instead

While the majority of buildings were just 'residential boxes' a few pieces of scatter terrain would add some variety and hopefully make it look a little more like a town

5mm strips of cereal box card were attached to the edging of the walls to try and add a little more detail

I glued a strip of shaped foamcore along a few of the buildings to break the monotony of having all the building looking the same. The doors were made simply from box cardboard glued to the reverse side that wasn't visible and then ran a pen along the grain with some pressure applied to make it look a little more realistic

Two and a Half Week Terrain

THE PAINTING STAGE

I've grouped images of the buildings how they combine for storage/transporting. All the terrain fits into two shopping bags once packed up.

Group A
Complete buildings.

Group B - scatter terrain
The scatter terrain (with the exception of the fountain) packs up inside the buildings in Group A for easy storage. Bridges and barricades are made from scraps of balsa, walls are made from shaped foamcore.

You are really talented. The scenery you made to be well transported, scratch built in so few time is really great.
I love the well/fountain scenery

It is a real bonus when easily transportable terrain can look SO SPLENDID. GREAT WORK!   thumbsup
Funny thing, I thought the Statue only had one arm...must have been another instance of imminent senility.  clown
