PostSubject: Adventures in Mordheim   Sat 23 Aug 2014 - 21:31

Hi All!

Thought it was about time I signed up to this site and shared some of the war-bands (and other Mordheim related models that I've been painting). I'll be building and painting a fair amount of different war-bands, so please check in once in a while for some updates!

I got hooked on Mordheim - City of the Damned with the initial release back in the late 90s, and have played it off and on since then. In my opinion, it is quite possibly the best game Games-Workshop has ever released. In typical GW fashion, it does have it's fare share of flaws but it also has a lot of character and is definitely a lot of fun.

So here goes...

Witch Hunters

Before the Mordheim bug had once again bitten me, I repainted some of my old Witch Hunters models (I still have enough to do another war-band) to try out some different painting techniques (mainly new washes and metal painting). These were eventually sold off to another home, leaving me to put together another war-band in the future.

Middenheimers
(Part One)

I've never really used any of the Mercenaries from the rulebook, they seemed a little 'vanilla' compared to things like Vampires, Witch Hunters and Chaos Worshippers.

During the normal post-game discussion, we hit on the topic of 'which Mercenary war-band is the best'. Sure Marienburgers start off with more gold, Reiklanders have BS4 Marksmen and an extended LD range for their Captain, and Middenheimers have the S4 Captains, Heroes and (IMHO) a better Skill Chart to choose from. To resolve the discussion a challenge was thrown down. Each one of us would take a different Mercenary group from the rulebook and play through several multiplayer games to determine which one is better. I'll be putting the battle reports up on here soon. Before that happens though... I've got pics of my Middenheimer war-band to share!

Middenheimers
(Part Two)

Swordsmen
The Swordsmen were possibly the most kit-bashed out of the war-band. The heads came from the Greatsword sprue that I had spare, the torsos were from the current Bretonnian archer plastics, swords from the State Troop sprue, everything else from the Militia box, and finally some wolf cloaks made from greenstuff. I wanted them looking different from the other Henchmen and I think these worked out. Fingers crossed they don't die miserably in games... something that tends to happen with models that I like.

Marksmen

Group-Shot!
Seeing that all of the Henchmen were completed, it seemed like a good time as any for a group-shot.

Middenheimers
(Part Three)

Captain

Youngbloods
Very minor work with just changing a few of the weapons. A great axe and sword/buckler just seemed like a better fit.

Champions
Painted up an additional Champion for just in case I make the 'Lad's Got Talent' roll on the experience chart.

I'm not sure what brings me more joy; your beautifully painted collection of warbands or that your profile avatar is Hieronymus Carl Friedrich Baron von Münchhausen. Both are quite amazing.

The Hairy Lads looked impressive in your battle report, but up close they are SPECTACULAR. Your attention to detail, choice of colors, & brushwork are OUTSTANDING...the metals are the most striking part of the minis (pun accidental). VERY WELL DONE!   thumbsup

Who ever received your Old Lady Burners has a War Band to be proud of/treasured...equally VERY WELL DONE!   thumbsup

That is a brilliant warband! Love 'em! Not only some excellent work kitbashing the figures, but I really like your painting style.

I have always found the three "mercenary" warbands well balanced. My preference is for the Reiklanders, but I think that is just because it better suits my preferred style of play (fire and maneuver rather than wade in a smash). Good luck with the campaign!

Great work. I love the metals you've painted and the conversion work. The Middenheimer youngblood is probably my favourtite. He looks much better with that huge axe than with his original weapon.

I just love looking at those faces, these guys really have character.
The blue goes great together with the fur color that you've picked.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent looking warbands you have there, Din!

The Middenheimers are my favourite so far. I especially like the bases you've done, they really tie your models in with the setting. Keep it up!

Undead
(Part One)

I've been using Undead for the first time in one of the gaming groups that I'm currently playing in (and I can't say that I've got the hang of them yet... but I've never been able to master the art of dice rolling!). Anyway, it was time to hit them with some paint.

I'm running them with a very loose Lahmian theme.

The brilliant idea for the Vampire was blatantly stolen (it was too good not to, and credit where credit is due...) from: http://maxxev.deviantart.com/art/Mordheim-...rsion-334849128

Undead
(Part Two)

Zombies
I've got a few more zombie sitting on my painting table waiting for some colour, but I've slowly started to realise that there's really only place for one or two as the main power in the warband lies with the Ghouls. Zombies not being able to run unless you have the right spell... well... sucks.
Later I've also got some conversions to get to should my Necromancer ever get the 'Spell of Awakening' and start raising my unlucky opponent's killed Heroes as 'Uber-Zombies'.

Dire Wolves
I decided to go with the 40K Fenris Wolves as my Dire Wolves, as the current plastics are really not too appealing. Rather than painting them in blacks and dark greys, I went with a patchy and dirty browns. I used the same technique as the Zombies for painting the eyes, to give the impression that they were no longer part of the living and were under the influence or necromantic magic.

Undead
(Part Three)

Necromancer
I decided to trim the staff down and use the hood from the Empire Wizard sprue in an effort to make the model look slightly more subtle.

Ghouls

Handmaidens (Dregs)
Seeing I was running (trying to) a Lahmian theme, I decided to run with some Handmaidens rather than the normal unfortunate looking Dregs. I was picturing these as individuals drawn to the Vampire with the promise of immortality should they prove themselves in the expedition to Mordheim (which so far haven't!).

Vampire
Here's the Vampire in all her undeathly (is that even a word?) glory.

That looks professional, very well executed. What did you use for the Handmaiden's legs? I think I was able to figure out the rest.

The Girls, Guys, & Whatever look HORRIFICALLY WONDERFUL. Your FINE choice of minis & color, SPLENDID conversion & brushwork make for an OUTSTANDING War Band with extra points for coining a new word. VERY WELL DONE once more!   thumbsup
