Hi guys, I saw this on youtube and I wanted to ask you... is it possible to make copies of a mordheim/warhammer figure with this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz8FwUEFMzY

You know, just use it to get the shape, then put green stuff and have your own mini cloned lol!

Hmmmm... maybe! It may not hold as much detail as you'd like though. It is on sale in Fred Aldous for under a fiver http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/brands/oyumaru.html which is just down the road from my office. I might give some a try.

But obviously this is not to make models for sale - just to make scenery peaces from OoP models and that sort of thing!

Then i go and recommend this one; http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/tools-and-misc/instant-mold.html

My brother toys with it and he says that with a little practice you can get out some decent details. Havent seen the result yet but im get back to you about it!

It seems like casting whole minis would be pretty difficult unless they're fairly 2-dimensional in terms of their pose. The detail on 28mm minis is also small enough that it's probably going to be hard to get a lot out of them (unlike the bust used in the example, which was more along the lines of sculpture from the classical period and on a much larger scale).

However, for specific parts or textures such as cloaks, weapons, barding, etc. press-molding is a great method, and that stuff (or similar products) is supposed to work quite well. I've only used GS before for press-molding, but I like the idea of getting some of this stuff.

You're not turning this into a "how to copy Citadel miniatures?" thread, right? You know I have to ask... Cathayan Monk 1

I have the Instant Mold from CMoN and it's fantastic. Most of my wagon wheels are copies... can you tell which ones? Wink I actually use a 2 part plastic/resin. I know it says "don't" but my molds haven't lost any detail to them.

The Oyumaru and Instant Mold are the same stuff, so don't worry about comparison.

I've bought a cheaper version on ebay...same use but...when cold it's white and stiff, not flexible as IM .
It's harder to use. Oh...i use to duplicate only details I HAVE SCULPTED. When i'll have time i'll try to do the same witha 3d bust to make my own pieces for my convertions.

You're not in violation of any rules. Copying pieces only becomes a problem if you start selling them; & even there you have Folk like Scibor & Game Zone that have built businesses doing modified/improved copies of G.W's stuff. It would not be in the best interest of the Forum to advertise copies of G.W. products for sale here...T.B.M.F. doesn't have a Corps of Lawyers to defend our interests like a certain Megalithic Miniatures Entity.
The repro stuff is of limited use as far as making copies of anyone's pieces...SO have FUN with it. What a Face

I've tried some Oyumaru and it was okay. A little tricky to get the mold right the first time, but as it's reusable that is okay! Dazza has made some cracking Sguig-Parrots using Instantmold to copy the beak from a Pink Horror.

Tried it for the first time today and so far I'm not SUPER impressed. I think there will be a hard limit to how much detail this stuff can achieve, and a decent learning curve to get there. I also think it is necessary to be able to sculpt a bit to use it as you'll need to correct imperfections in your putty to get the most out of your cast.

Instant mold is awesome stuff. I think a big trick with it is to treat it essentially like any other mold-making compound.

There are some great youtube videos about effective ways to work with instant mold.

I've had so-so results with it when I've made molds without the aid of a mold box. However, you can use the material to make very good and reusable two part molds. It is handy when you don't want a million copies of something, so you don't want to go through the hassle, expense, and time involved with making a rubber mold.

The product has limitations, but if you fiddle with it enough, you'll probably find that the limitations are actually much, much less significant than you expect. One of the biggest limitations, in my experience, is that when you use an appropriate amount of material to make a reliably re-usable mold, it is a bit stiff which can make it more difficult to remove pieces from the mold after casting.
