Starting warbands - Post them here! (Read first post, plz)

Alcaeus, drop the armour and the spears. Unless you are playing with houserules both are near worthless. I guess a 6+ save is a nice bonus but the cost is too high early in a campaign, and the spears are useless at low initiative models like orcs. They will never strike before anyone charging them, so invest the money somewhere else.
You only have two orc boys and you will eventually want six heroes, since it is extremely unlikely that both will get lad´s got talent you should try to get more orc henchmen either now or early in the campaign.

One ranged boy from the beginning might work, you'd want to get higher Bs asap. I'm not sure what to replace, and as has been noted, you want more boyz. But I tought spears made a model strike first (except against someone with the same rule who has a higher initiative), what's wrong with them? Am I missing something here (haven't played in ages :p).

Spears strike first, as do chargers, so when a spearwielder is charged, who really strikes first is determined by Initiative. This used to work differently, which may be the source of any confusion. In my group we have houseruled the old spear rule back since it makes spears more viable.

Why not? The important thing is that you like the feel of your gang!

Two things though: your boss has a shield, which won't do him much good - I suggest dropping it, secondly your boss has the highest bs, he should have one of the crossbows!

Do you have all of your heroes? or are Shadow Warriors a hero choice?

The DH axe is a bit of a waste (but might be WYSIWYG?) High initiative elves should avoid weapons that make them strike last.

Thanks the reply. Yes the shadow walkers are all heroes and are maxed. What about a spear instead of a DH axe? I put it in because I am kit bashing and using high elf lions of chrace kit, like the look of the axe

A spear is definitely a great tool for an elf, since no one is faster. Or you can include the DH axe but count it as just an axe until the appropriate strength skills have been taken.

Is it worth dropping anyone to add armor?

Not unless you have great house rules for armor. Otherwise armor is a luxury that will usually not help all that much if you do buy it.

Where should I go with gear once I have had a few games? Everyone with bows and swords who hasn't already got them? Longbows? I was thinking of having a couple of bodyguards for the spellcaster, two h2h specialists and alot of ranged punch.

Any improvements for this Dwarf Treasure hunter warband? We are using half armour, half blackpowder and a houserule where warbands starting late into the campaign get a bonus 50gc to start as well as a warband specific houserule rule regarding adding a runemaster to the treasure hunter list.

I've also made a Dwarf treasure hunter warband which I would like to hear your opinions on. It's based on the basic rules for Mordheim.

Bjornur - that looks like a solid list which is almost the list I have seen before. Not really had expeirence AS dwarfs but from what i have seen fighting against them they will want helmets soon. I recommend buying them as soon as you get the gold. Although a 9th model would help for rout tests too so maybe that first. Just do not forget Thunderers are still good in melee. And make sure you do not get stuck in a shooting battle with someone that outnumbers you.

Do Dwarfs really need helmets? Considering their hard heads?

Besides that i like it. I have only playtested my Marienburgers against my brothers dwarfs and he suffers heavily from my shooting. So remember to seek cover when you advance!!

Thanks for the quick and good responses. Looking forward to try it out. I was also wondering what type of upgrades I should aim for, so got a better grip on that now aswell. And yes, will try to use cover since mobility isn't my biggest strength.

Do people not have advice for mine? I realise that it is probably more difficult to give advice for houseruled warbands.

I am not sure how such a well armored force will work, sorry Bale. I would imagine it to be good, but you need to spend money on cheaply geared warriors asap to bulk up your list. Otherwise a bad roll or two would hurt bad. What rules you use for those runes? That could help people review as well.

They are the rules for the runemaster from the Dwarf Rangers warband:

CountBale: I agree with BalrogTheBuff; drop the armour. It's not worth it for the start of a campaign, with the 105gc you save you can buy some Thunderers with Crossbows, that's where Dwarf warbands really shine!

Also, there's a reason Dwarf warbands only have 4 heroes - they're tough as hell! I'd suggest you either use the Treasure Hunter or the Dwarf Ranger warband list, for the sake of balance. The lists aren't that different from each other anyway, it's what you prefer; an Engineer or a Runesmith.

The main reason for the extra hero was because the other warbands in the campaign are: High Elves, Dark Elves, 2 Nuln warbands and some lizardmen. We realised that most of the other warbands could walk faster than mine could run and many of them had ridiculous range capabilities as well that I would spend most of the time walking running after warband that were walking casually away from me peppering me with arrows. So to balance it a bit we gave my warband an extra hero.

I agree with Pfreck. Drop more equipment (armour, some pistols, some dwarf axes) and get more warriors! You said it yourself: Dwarfs are slow. If other can pepper you with arrows, you can pepper them with bolts! Killing a Dwarf ain't that easy with T4 and that special rule they got (plus, when shooting, you always have to roll on the injury chart and don't get automatic OOAs), so they should be pretty save if they get an S3 hit. On the other hand, fragile elves with T3 will suffer way more form S4 crossbow hits, so you shouldn't be in a disadvantage regarding shooting. With the running away it's the same. If they try to play hit and run, shoot them with crossbows.

With only 5 warriors, you will have more problems making up for the lack of speed in objective driven scenarios. Also, you will rout much faster, which isn''t too good.

@ CountBale: having just been massacred by my brothers dwarfs (our first game in years ) I can say that dwarfs are hard as hell. Get many of them though because if your opponent can gang up on them alone you will be in trouble. Oh and the gromril armour seems to cheap considering heavy armour costs 50 gcs (if I remeember correctly) I suggest dropping it and adding a few clansmen or at least beardlings. Beardligns are way better than they seem considering they also get all the dwarf special rules.
