I have used the Black Lava product and would recommend. It is easy to apply, typically with a toothpick. The Black Lava is very fine in texture. I've used it for 15mm models and works great for that scale. I'm not sure about strength, but I would tend to think this would hold up better than white glue with sand. The only difference, I applied this to the base before priming and it dry brushed just fine.
