PostSubject: Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure)   Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure) Icon_minitimeTue 9 Jun 2009 - 11:55

Hi

My brother and I have decided to pull together our efforts in order to create a small Mordheim campaing. The timesetting isn't decided 100%, but it'll be before Mordheims destruction, and during the time of the three emperors, and the setting itself will mainly be in Talabecland. Also, I think we will focus more on small "army skirmish" combats instead of the original mordheim merenary background. This will give us the oportunity to go nuts with uniforms etc. But also give us a chance to explore a lot of the very corlourfull warhammer background which haven't gotten much love since it's creation. For example, I'm planning on making the main Talabecland warband consist of the men sent out to purge the nation of "heretical sigmarites", and in respons a Reiklander warband could include Knights of the Fiery Heart, as that knightly order was founded in respons to these hunts.

The overlying goal with the project is (hopefully) to make a whole lot of different warbands. Thus this thread will be all about showing you the progress. First up is a small painting exercise consisting of a Ostermark warband in progress:

As a result of it being an exercise project, and the fact that I hadn't originally planned to make it, the miniatures will mainly just come straight out of the bitz box.

This is the first miniature I have painted for a very long time, and I guess I'm satisfied with it. please note that I didn't plan to paint more than the uniform at first. The model didn't even have a head, but when I had finished painting the corlours and the armour, I thought what the h*ll and slapped on a head and painted the rest too. Thus the Idea of a whole Ostermark Warband was spawned Embarassed

and these two are following him, still a bit wip. Sorry about the dark pictures.

all three together from behind. Could someone explain how you get the images directly into your post? normally I would type [img width=700 height=399] for example, but I can't do that here, so the pictures becomes enormous.

Right now I'm painting handgunners (straight out of the box Rolling Eyes) and converting a captian.

Hummmmm, well this could come out cool and takeing it away from Mardheim is a nice idea and if it's going too be in the time of the tree emps, then, are you going too do Stirland and Middenheim warbands too? After all Stirland,Middenheim and Talabecland where the chef powers in the time.

Oh and what do you think of my new avatar?

Stirland for sure, when I have got a better grasp on painting yellow. Right now I'm playing around with what base corlour to ude for it, and have so far settled for snakebite leather. which can be seen (poorly) on the headles one. The first one's yellow is based white, given a yellow ink, then gryphon sepia wash, then higlighted with sunburst yellow, I think it became far too muddy.

Middenland depends a bit on which time we settle for. Right now i'm inclined to let it all happen before the crusades, where the cult of ulric and Middeland were still enemies and if it goes there, I do not think Middenland will get any attention. On the other hand, my brother want's to include Sylvania and gunpowder, so it will properly end up being closer to Vlad's crowning, and if so, I think we will include Middenland, even though that would mean we would have to change my idea for the Talabecland warband. Do you guys think it would be okay to include wolf priests in a talabecland warband, even though the head of the cult had returned to middenheim support the count of middenland?

EDIT: I think it's pretty cool! where did you find it?

EDIT AGAIN: just to include a picture... A W.I.P fat zombie in puffsleaves.

COOL STUFF! The minis ARE great! Glad you decided to give them heads...for the most part Suspect . What do you have planned for the bases?
I've found the 500pt. War Band Rules work great with Mordheim with the addition of the Open Order rule & the climbing/falling rule, & some playing around with the character advancement.
Watching the minis & the background develop will be GREAT FUN! Keep up the GOOD WORK! thumbsup

My plan was to just let them be as they are. Some rubble made of sand and flock laying on dirt made by woodglue mixed with a bit of polifylla. Randomly covered with leafs and small "grass"/bush things

Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure) Ostermark017

But seeing as people have trouble seeing this, and also because I think the miniatures end up too dark right now, I think I will try to add some more corlour... Maybe by japping on some flockgrass or something.

Thanks to you and all you other guys Very Happy I used ink on the finished one's clothe, and have to some degree used washes on the skin and armour, but I you are thinking about the "shiny" look I think it is mostly due to camera flash.

- I wasn' really sure if it would be al right to post the following in here too, but if not i guess you can correct me Razz We have been playing around trying to make up some fluffy, charecteristic tweaks to existing warbands in order to use them as some thin else. Please let us know what you think of it! Ideas, corrections etc. are welcomed warmly!

Sylvanian Mercenaries

The common folk of The Empire have viewed the backwater county of Sylvania with disdain and mistrust for as long as its thin soil has been inhabitated, avoiding doing business with its mumbling population, and viewing them as beings only a few inches above the thieving Strigani.

As the county bought its independence from Stirland with its aid in rebuilding the nation after the cursed night of the restless dead, this resentment towards Sylvanians has multiplied tenfold. People still tell tales of the time when the dreaded sorcerer Frederick van Hal waged war from the county, spelling dead to the plaque vary nations with newly diseased victims and necromantic power, some of the more outspoken commoners therefore openly accuse the Sylvanian royalty for being responsible for the nightmarish incursion that seemed to ravish far lighter on the province of Sylvania than anywhere else.

These outspoken few, whose numbers seems to be growing as fast as the misery of the land, speak of the Sylvanian nobility and their depraved manners. They say that in Sylvania, people howl with the wolves and dances with wraiths. They say that nobles are known to wear coats of human skin, and that they all posses powers marking them for the witch hunters’ pyres. This is of course not all true, but that some of the noble houses of the province openly take pride in being descendants of black hearted van Hel is an unsettling fact.

With the civil war raging between the emperors of Talabecland and the rightly elected emperors, the Sylvanians have started to interfere in Empirial history in a way unseen since the time of the necromancer’s reign. The Sylvanian nobility have always gone by the policy that a weakened Stirland means a strengthened Sylvania, in many ways this can be said about the Empire as a whole too, and the nobility is therefore secretly hiring mercenaries and sending soldiers to the different warzones to sabotage the missions of other nations soldiers, cause terror in local populations and make sure that the war doesn’t die out. All of course under the cover of helping the divided Empire in its struggle.

Warband: The warband follows the rules and troop selection of ordinary mercenaries with the following exceptions and special rules.

Backwater nation: Sylvania has never been known for its wealth or innovation, and modern wonders such as black powder weapons are almost unheard of, reserved for the wealthiest of the wealthiest only. Therefore, members of a Sylvanian warband cannot purchase any black powder weapons at all.

Wicked Nobility: Sylvanian Nobility are more infamous for it’s disdain for commoners than any other province’s nobility, and as such they rarely rely enough on a common born man to raise him to the rank of officer. This role mostly falls to young or lowly nobles, who bring with them the old and secret family traditions of practicing the black arts. So even though the young officers might not be the most fitting leaders, they bring something dark and far more dangerous with them to the warzones.

Rename the entry for mercenary captain to “Sylvanian Noble”, and ad the following to his special rules:

Wizard: Sylvanian nobility is corrupted by the lure of the dark arts. The noble counts as a wizard and is able to use necromantic magic. He will first appear as a spell caster after he has cast his first spell in each battle, or the first time he uses it against a certain enemy warband in a campaing. As such, Witch hunters and other characters with hatred against wizards will first start hating the noble if he uses his magic

And secondly. Suggestions for a better new for the following warband is welcomed even more warmly I love you

The Talabecland Hunters of Warlocks, Sigmarite heretics and other foul perversions.

During the time of the Talabecland revolt, and a good long time through the age of Tree Emperors, the counts and countesses of Talabecland officially declared Sigmar a false god, and his worship heretical, in order to gain the support of the Ulrican cult.

Backed up by the Taalites and Ulricans, the self declared emperors set in motion a man hunt to rout out everyone who worshipped Sigmar as a god, openly or in secret, from the soil of Talabecland and Middenland. Quickly developing methods of torture and interrogation to get accused victims to confess and report, the men hired to catch and burn these so called heretics made an infamous reputation for themselves, which would come to ring through the ages, forever staining the county of Talabecland with guilt and horror.

These groups of interrogators and trackers were mostly recruited from the ranks of veteran soldiers or the Talabheim citywatch, although they often had the fellowship of an ulrican or taalite priest. They proved to be horribly effective, catching thousands of “heretics” each year, submitting them to grievous torture, before burning them at the stake or sending them to the guillotine. Only a lucky few of the accused proved themselves innocent and avoided execution, none avoided the torture.

To represent these hired hunters, use the rules and troop selection for witch hunters, with the following changes.

Not Sigmarites: The warrior priest entry is replaced with that of a priest of Ulric, which can be brought for his hiring fee. He is then a normal part of the warband, and no upkeep cost needs to be paid. All the rules for him is still in effect, he can for example, still purchase a wolf.

Bodyguard: If a Priest of Ulric is part of the warband, he can request the protection of a templar of Ulric. To represent this, one of the 0-3 witch hunters may be replaced by a champion from the Middenhiemer Mercenary Warband entry. He must be equipped with a double-handed hammer, and a suit of heavy armour. He has the ability to ride (if only one horse is allowed, he will still be able to purchase a horse, making it possible to have two mounted warriors in your warband). Also ad the followiong rules to his profile.

Hatred: White wolves see Witch Hunters (Templars of Sigmar), Warrior-Priests, Sigmarite Matriarchs and Sisters Superior as agents of an opposing cult, and thus they HATE these models. That hatred does not extend to other models in those warbands, as the White wolf see them simply as misguided followers of an errant cult.

Notice: All entry titles in the witch hunter profile should be changed to something more appropriate, such as witch hunter = Veteran, Flagellant = executioner, zealot = tracker or torture etc.

A very small update just to show that i'm moving forward (although very slowly) and more importantly, to take my mind of the final exam I have tomorrow Surprised

Here is a wip picture of all the models that will go into the starting warband.

Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure) Ostermarkwarband003.th

and some "close-ups" where it gets embarresingly vissible how fast and uncarring some of the conversions were made.
Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure) Ostermarkwarband007.th

Welcome To Talabecland (a mordheim painting adventure) Ostermarkwarband006.th

The reikgaurd and the one with the twohanded mace are going to be champions, while the new acher model and the head- and armless one in the background are going to be youngbloods (representing a young banner bearer and a scout).

This is just to show that i'm also working on some hired swords. The greenstuffed WIP is going to be a warlock, while the slayer just needs painting and basing... unfortunately, I have run out of both spray and money... No

That's all for now I love you
