Finally… This is for you, Chief Tugboat!
But I also hope others will find it helpful!
In this tutorial I want to show you, how I make my crates and barrels with polystyrene.
Those are the tools I use :
- a sharp mechanical pencil
- a little blunt pencil
- a scalpel
- a flat and thin piece of wood (I use a cocktail stick from which I cut off the top)
- a carving instrument
And for the barrels different tubes to cut out the basic form out of the polystyrene
I will show you two different ways to make crates and barrels.
Crates1) Cut a piece of polystyrene into shape.
Crate 12) With the scalpel cut the planks into the polystyrene.
3) Deepen and highlight the spaces with the normal pencil.
And maybe add some knotholes.
2) Add some wooden texture with your flat impressed mechanical pencil by scratching over the surface.
Crate 2Repeat step 1).
2) With the scalpel cut the planks into the polystyrene.
3) With the cocktail stick and carving Instrument (for the corners) push the polystyrene in.
4) Add some more planks on the pushed-in parts with the scalpel.
5) Deepen and highlight the spaces with the normal pencil.
6) Add some wooden texture with your flat impressed mechanical pencil by scratching over the surface.
Paint the crates in your desired color.
Some more crates I made.
On some of them I added holes at the end of the planks to illustrate nails.
Barrels1) Cut out some round shape.
2) Cutt off some material on bottom and top.
(If you like, you can flatten the surface with some sandpaper.)
Barrel 13) With your scalpel cut a circle on top of the barrel.
4) With the cocktail stick push the polystyrene in.
5) Add some planks on the pushed in parts with the scalpel.
6) With your scalpel cut two steel strips around the barrel.
7) Cut planks into the polystyrene with the scalpel.
8 ) Deepen and highlight the spaces on the sides and the top with the normal pencil.
9) Add some wooden texture with your flat impressed mechanical pencil by scratching over the surface
Barrel 2(This is truly not the best barrel I made with this way, but I hope you can see my intended procedure…
)
Repeat step 1) to 6).
7) With the cocktail stick push the complete side of the barrel in.
8 ) Cut planks into the polystyrene with the scalpel.
8 ) Deepen and highlight the spaces on the sides and the top with the normal pencil.
9) Add some wooden texture with your mechanical pencil.
Paint the barrels in your desired color.
Some more barrels I made.
So…
I hope you like this little tutorial.
As always : Comments are welcome!!
And if you made some crates and barrels with this tutorial, I would be happy to see some pictures of them!!
