Hi folks, I've been and bought myself an Ogres box set partly on a whim, partly because I've been looking at the awesome conversions and takes on the varied Maneaters.

I've been looking at the various rules people have put together looking at how many I can field for a campaign (if I ever find one to take part in). It seems there's a big variety, with including Gnoblars as warband members or equipment, cost of each ogre and the general character of the warband shown in each rule set.

I'm basically wondering which rule set is the most used, my guess is the BTB set. I'd like to model my guys on what I'll be using the most, and I want to get the look right, there being a hunter in one of them, which really catches my imagination.

So, yeah, which rule set do you guys recommend? Or know which is the most likely to be accepted in one off games and campaigns? Thanks very much and apologies for the essay.

I would be inclined to accept the Ogre Maneaters from BTB other other Ogre warbands. However, that is simply because I have faith in the testing done for BTB and not because anyone has played an Ogre warband in my gaming group.

I do like the look of the BTB rule set. I've been wondering though, what about being able to get in to buildings and alleys? With a couple of the other rule sets I imagined the Ogres sending the Gnoblars in to ransack a building while they guard the door. It's been a long time since I have played any kind of tabletop game, can the Ogres get through doorways and things like that, or are they best left to fight in the outdoors?

Some of the ogres in the warband are specifically indicated as NOT being on a 40mm base because they are young and not fully grown. In addition gnoblars may be taken as equipment and may enter buildings, etc. Finally it all depends on the setting you are playing in and the terrain being fought over. We spend a lot of our campaign time fighting in towns that are not ruined, so ogres and trolls and the like are generally out of luck when the fight moves into a building. However, in Mordheim games the buildings are generally ruined, which makes the big guys more useful.

Also it depends on the normal base size your group might play with. Many groups have abandoned GW bases altogether an use round bases which are often not in GW scales. These groups must make up their own rules for moving about the table, but its not that hard to do so.

Thank you, I wasn't entirely sure on the gnoblars, and the ogre youths would be nice to put in to play. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm currently putting some ogres together so I'll over in the painting and modelling thread soon, wondering what to do about making them damn youths.

The variation of rules among different gaming groups makes me unsure about this warband Laughing , it makes it hard to model your miniatures on what equipment and bases etc would be viable
