| I thought it would be nice to make a little thread where everybody can talk about what music they are listening too at the moment. It would help everyone to make insteresting discoveries | |

| I guess I'll start ^^ These days I'm listening 2 new CDs I bought from Amazon recently. The first one is For Emman, Fovever Ago, from Bon Iver. I discovered this guy recently when he made it to the front page of Youtube. I was soo amazed that I went on Amazon.com the second I finished the tune. It's a relativly short CD - 38 minutes - with 9 tracks on it. It was recorded in a hunting cabin during the winter of 2007, in northwestern wisconsin. It's a mostly solo CD featuring the signer (can't find his name but I know it's not Bon Iver) with minimalist guitar. I'd describe it as melanolic-acoustic-folk-indie.. you get the idea? Anyway, a beautiful CD that I love to listen before going to bed. http://www.myspace.com/boniver______________________________________________________________________ I also bought a CD from Chuck Ragan, former signer of the well known Hot Water Music (super popular punk-post-hardcore band from florida that started back in 93 and came back after two (!) hiatus). Anyway, it's a solo album again, named Feast or Famine but this time it's a pure folk CD with some indy influences. 46 minutes, 12 tracks of lovely folk. It's a reallly good CD to listen to on the road. I don't know why, it just sounds like that. http://www.myspace.com/chuckragan______________________________________________________________________ Finaly, between these two albums I mostly squeeze some Glass and Ashes, with their purely awesome Aesthetic Arrest. I've had this CD for a long time but I always come back to it. It's one of the best post-hardcore band I ever listened too, but it's fairly underground, in Canada at least. Normally this type of vocal bothers me after a while but it just fits right with this band. One of my best CD of all time. http://www.myspace.com/glassandashes | |

| What I'm listening to at the moment: 1. Kings of Leon - Youth and Young ManhoodTo me, it sounds like a mix of Johnny Cash and speed rock. Really raises your mood. 2. Babylon Circus - Marchée des IllusionsBeing a great fan of Latin, Spanish and French Ska, this band is a natural choice:) 3. Panteón Rococó - Panteón Rococó (it's their 4th album and they already seem to have run out of original titles...) As above, and additionally the BEST live band ever! Fortunately, they are not as famous in Europe as in Latin America, thus a friend of mine and I were able to dance onstage with the band twice 4. Pendulum - Hold your colourDrum and Base, pretty fast, and I do love fast music 5. Revolution is just a heartbeat awayThis is a compilation of Streetpunk, Ska, Punk, some Hip Hop and whatever... I especially like the lyrics on this CD. 6. 3 Doors Down - Seventeen DaysOne of my two going-to-bed favourites. 7. Amanda Rogers - Daily NewsThe second going-to-bed fav. Also, good for rainy weather. I have once been to a concert of her and the electricity broke down so she decided to play unplugged and it was just fantastic. 8. Musik der Intifada (Music of the Intifada)Traditional Palestinian music with somewhat rebellious lyrics, recorded somewhere at the end of the eigthees. 9. Misfits - Famous MonstersHorror-Punk. Hilarious lyrics. That's it for the moment, I belive... Now I'm going to have a look for links. Nothing to do at work anyway... | |

| I've been listening to a few things recently, while I'm painting and building terrain:
Smut Peddlers - Porn Again: Dirty, dirty hip-hop. Very funny (but slightly sick) lyrics which include the mantra for my life: "I stay married to D-Cup breastresses with music, weed and porno as my mistresses". They only did one album and an EP unfortunately before splitting up and going on to other things. Another great lyric is "Am I angelic or just slighlty off-track, my bones shift where my ripped-off wings flap."
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: One of his finest albums which tells the tale of alien love god and guitar fiend Ziggy Stardust. His rise, fall and eventual Rock 'n' Roll Suicide.
The Kinks - Village Green Preservation Society: While the Beatles and everyone else went to America to have fun in the sun the Kinks were banned from entering the country and so stayed at home to produce a decidely English take on the whole 60's pop thing.
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing: An odd instrumental CD that just builds and builds in the background. The tracks have been used in more films, TV shows and adverts than I can think of so you've probably heard at least one of his songs.
Other random tracks that end up being played a lot are:
Peter Tosh - Stepping Razor: One of the best reggae tracks ever.
Pandemic Studios - Oh No You Didn't: From one of the ads for Mercenaries 2. You can download the full version from their website. Very funny.
The Specials - Ghost Town: Probably my favourite Ska track, although Lip Up Fatty comes close.
Busta Rhymes & Ozzie Osbourne - This Means War: Busta sampled Iron Man and got Ozzie to sing a new chorus, pure class.
Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills: Everyone should, by law, love the Maiden and accept Bruce as the coolest guy who ever lived.
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart: I know, it's so cheesy it hurts but I love it all the same. Especially the Dan Band version.
Oh, and Mr Brettonia, you've just surprised me by being the only other Man 'O' War fan on the planet. I knew there were at least two of us!

| I WAS rather tempted to chime in with "Sounds of Silence", but this had guilt trip connotations that were TOTALLY unintended. NOW, what I hear you say , can a deaf old coot contribute to the thread. Beats me! Actually until a couple of decades a go music WAS a VERY big part of my life, AND ALL the Folk, Folk Rock, Acid Rock, and an ODD mix of Broadway STILL are running through what passes for a brain. When I'm happy which is MOST of the time, it seems an appropriate melody pops up. The description of Kings of Leon turned me on, althought after listening it I think it's a bit too poppy. The vocals is the same as the majority of the mainstream rock bands, I guess that's why. I've listened to Babylon Circus. Great latin-ska band. I'm just not into that type of music anymore But they are verrry good at what they are doing . Pendulum is a nice discovery. Thanks Eliazar, I think I'm going to download a couple of their tracks and buy a CD if I really like em. (I had apprehensions, I thought it would be hardcore drum n' bass techno because you said it was pretty fast) The Misfits are pure awesomness! Who doesnt like ol' punk-rock with lyrics about space and zombies haha! Played by guys with ridiculous muscles and dressed as skeleton on top of that. - mrbretonnia wrote:
Gwar - Meat Sandwitch
I see you're a metal guy eh? I don't listen to most of these band but I know they are good ^^. A man of taste haha. I know there is a guitarist from Gwar that plays in a hardcore band with a couple of other famous musician from the US metal/punk scene. It's called Only Crime (http://www.myspace.com/onlycrime), there's like the drummer from Black Flag in it, signer from good riddance and a guitarist from Converge. - Admin Tom wrote:

I don't know why, I was expecting some metal here Anway. I'm glad i'm not the only one to love Destination Calabria . Are you talking about the version with that jamaican signer that died a couple of weeks after recording the tune or the original one? Anyway great tune even though there's *almost * only saxophone on it ^^ - Rancid wrote:

OH MAN, that brings up SOO many good old memories Especially Lars Fred & The bastards and Rancid. I saw them live back in 2004. What a show! | Nice Idea!
I love discovering new music!
Here's my current selection:
The Faint - awesome electronic rock band with one of the best live performances seen yet (2 weeks ago, and still I'm trippy!)
Turin Brakes - at first something you might put up when you're having a girl over cause it's easy to the ear, but then, when you really listen to it... it rocks! - also, this live performance ranks up with the faint.
Black Sun Empire/Pendulum (equally good D'n'B)
Harry Gregson Williams - Soundtrack composer, for amongst others Kingdom of Heaven, which I deem his best work.
Tool - Will allways remain high on my list, just brilliant Rock.
The Mars Volta - though their new album isn't that great, I love the experimental rock thing - plus... sampling over a birdcage is great! hehe
A lot of Classical composers, exept (sorry JohnYoung) I really hate Mozart... overrated fool... - Composers I DO like are Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Stravinsky, Bach, Grieg, Rachmaninov, and a lot of their modern day performers.
Nada Surf - most likely due to nastalgic feelings, but I still like their sound - same goes for Incubus
Ali Farka Toure - Great African artist. Brilliant album together with Ry Cooder
iron and Wine - Well composed songs most of them
Zoot Woman - Also a great electonic rock band
Other than that, I like the whole minimal techno crossover thing... so clubs do me well.. hehe

Unfortunately they are the wrong Smut Peddlers but glad you're enjoying them. If you search for 'The Red Light' on You Tube you can find some of the good stuff. The other band I forgot to mention is Handsome Boy Modelling School which is just strange, funny and incredibly tight hip-hop from Prince Paul and Dan the Automator. Oh, and Gravediggaz, and Del Tha Funky Homosapien, and Big'n'Rich (Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy!) and, and aaargh. There're just too many to mention.

I love Mars Volta albums but live they are kind of crappy. It might because I saw em in an arena though. It sounded like a wall with some organ vibration peeking up over the rest of the sound. That was terrible. Classical: I don't like mozart either. I'm more into the romantic and early contemporary composers. I think my favorite is Debussy. La Cathédrale Engloutie is a blast to play/listen, trust me Oh and a random tought: Check this funny video about Rachmaninov, you might enjoye it.. Funny thing you're talking about Ali Farka Toure. I happen to have bought a CD for my mom last chrismas. It's playing sometime in the house. I enjoye his african-blues sound Very original indeed. - KingSkin wrote:

Oh then I enjoy these rappers. This clip is kinda like the one for Sabotage from the beasty boys haha. Pretty good rap tune. Nice flow, but the lyrics.. OMG If you're into that kinda of old-school rap tune then you might like DJ Format w/ MC Abdominals. One of my recent discoveryHandsome Boy Modelling School is pretty weird T_T! | I love DJ Format and MC Abdominals! Format is from Brighton which is just down the road from me and I saw them live supporting Ugly Duckling a few years back. I liked it so much I bought him a beer and then bought his album the next day. Format's beats are great and Abdominals is like the coolest geek ever with some great lyrics.
Along similar lines is Buck 65, he's like a country rapper sort of thing but that doesn't get it across. 'Blowing Smoke in People's Faces' is a great song that ponts out what's wrong wth a lot of the rest of hip-hop.
And yeah, Smut Peddllers do have some very, uh, raw lyrics but for me, it's like they're low-rent and they know it so they don't mind reaching into some pretty sick places for great rhymes.

| Cheers for the list dude, I'll check those out. I've got some of Buck 65's stuff and pretty much everything Roots Manuva has ever done. The man is a legend and I recently found out he records in my girlfriend's sister's studio and they've promised to invite me along next time they throw a party! Mos Def and Jurassic 5 are cool too. I'd recommend trying out Del Tha Funky Homosapien (especially the Deltron 3030 album) and Ugly Duckling. Del did a lot of stuff with Gorillaz so you'll probably recognise his voice. Saul Williams is good too, did a great cover of Tobacco Road and his new album was produced by Trent Reznor. I can't stand NIN personally but Reznor is a great producer. I quite liked 'Kick, Push' by Lupe Fiasco but I can't help hearing the lyrics as 'Kate, Bush'. | |
