Here's the special rule in question:

Quote :
Slow Witted: Although Ogres are capable of earning experience and bettering themselves they are not the smartest of creatures. Ogres only gain advances at half the rate of everyone else (i.e. they must accrue twice as much experience as normal to get an advance).
I've always read is as they gain a ½ experience point, where others would've gotten 1, but I was reading another post, where Matumaros underlined what it says in the bracket. From this text, I'd interpretate it as they gain the same amount of experience, but where others would gain an advance at 2 experience, they'd need 4 experience.

Which one is correct? I'd say the latter, but damn that nerfs them.

And as a side question; if the latter is correct, will an Ogre then be able to reach 180 experience (or 28 for a henchman), or only roll max 13 increases as a Hero or 2 as a henchman?

Hmmm.  I don't remember the previous post, but aren't 1/2 experience point and 4 experience the same thing?  If you award a 1/2 a point per regular point you have to gain 4 of them to reach the first advance at '2'.  If you instead require that they don't earn an advance until '4' but award regular experience points, the ogre will need 4.  Right? scratch

I found the accounting a pain, but my ogres always died before I earned a second advance so the point was pretty moot anyway.

Edit: I always treated the ogre rule as one of those unfunded Federal mandates our government has become fond of recently. There is a rule but no guide as to how to make it work.

I think you're correct, in that it should just be half an experience point gained, so he get's upgrades slower than everyone else (but still faster than Goblins and Zombies Very Happy)

The problem the OP had, is that if you take the second translation literally, then you would move the 'level up' boxes on the experience chart, so that you would only be able to fit two advances on the chart (by moving the first bold-bordered box to position four, and so on).

It makes much more sense to have them be able to get the same amount of advances as everyone else, but just take twice as long getting there. Personally, my problem with that whole thing was trying to keep track of which boxes were half full and which were completely full... in the end we settled for a '/' mark or an 'X' depending on how much XP the Ogre had in the last box on his chart.

I don't see where there should be a problem with this rule. You only get half an experience point for everything that is worth one point for everyone else. Or you get one point for things that would get others two. So, if the ogre doesn't become a hero, he's need earn 28 experience to fill these 14 squares. I cross out the squares whenever my minis earn experience, so for the ogre I#d probably stick to just making half a cross for every experience earned.

If you don't see the problem, I presume I haven't explained it well enough.

The rule says, that Ogres earn advances at half rate. Also the rule says that he will need to accrue twice as much experience as others would to gain the same advance roll.
This leads to the conclusion, that Ogres would need 28 experience (for Henchmen) or 180 experience (for Heroes) to reach the maximum advances.
However, is that even allowed? Afaik Heroes top at 90 experience and Henchmen at 14 (though I haven't been able to find the section where it says so, except the roster sheet).

Nothing is said about ½ experience, it's the (again) advances, which are earned at half rate. It makes a huge difference concerning warband rating, if Ogres would be able to reach 180 experience, which is why it's an important issue.

But yes, as you've all agreed on, it makes sense to do as I've always done - noting a half experience for where others would've earned a whole point. And having them lose their last 8 increases, because Heroes can only go to 90 experience, would be a shame.
