Painting yellow over black? Help!

Hello everyone, just another question for you painting experts out there. How do I get yellow to layer smoothly over a black undercoat? I'm using GW paint (sunburst yellow over chaos black) and it seems like no matter what I do the yellow looks mottled and slightly lumpy. I usually thin my paint down with water and build up a few coats, but for some reason I can't get it to look smooth and clean. I even tried using less/more water and that didn't work either.

What do you guys recommend? Should I paint the section I want to put the yellow over a different color first? It doesn't look horrible right now, but it's definitely not as smooth as other parts of the model.

Hey Synder,

Don't start with the yellow. First lay down a base coat of an orange or red-orane; then a brighter shade of yellow-orange; and finally the yellow.
If you dry brush the mini with white you can get the effect of a white under coat & still have the black shadowing effect [it's easier to see the details that way].
That's the way I do it anyway, & I've gotten a compliment or two on the result [there are so many tasteless people out there ]. Hope this works for you.

Thanks a lot, that really made it look much better. The night goblins are coming along...I'm fairly pleased with them seeing as how I haven't painted in so long. It's fun.

i find that brown is good for this task as well

Alternatively you could use an orange or yellow foundation paint.

If you dont have foundation, the absolute best starter is bleached bone.
