Starting Setup Question

We've always played it that 8" from a map edge could be anywhere along the vertical map edge (so you could put your warrior on the 4th floor of a structure, 6" into the map). It has recently occurerred to us that maybe they meant 8" from the ground level part of the map edge (meaning you probably couldn't get anything above 2nd floor very often). How does everyone else play it?


EDIT: May as well ask this one while I'm at it... Are there official rules or restrictions on where animals can set up? For instance, if you could start them in range of the map edge but on a level they couldn't otherwise get too (only ladders or climbing can get to that level), would you be allowed to start your animal there? Let's assume there's a reason you would want to put it there, like a ramp on the far edge of the building leading to an adjacent building's upper floors. I realize you can house rule it however you want, but if it was a tournament type setting, would you be allowed to place the animal there at start?

In my circle we have always taken it to mean 8" in from the edge in the manner you have been taking it rather than from the surface. Nor have we played with any restrictions on where you start your animals. They just have to jump down if they are going to get down.

We play it as 8" from the ground. Since we also put the tall buildings more into the middle, you need crouch or infiltrate for the realle good sniper-positions. Animals can start everywhere within these 8".

We play that you have 8 inchs in and you cannot be within 4 inches of the edge of the board, there is no height restrictions.

Just curious, but why the extra addition of being 4" away from the edge?

I'm not sure why we started that one. I think it was to prevent us from hiding in the corners.

We play that anything in the deployment zone is fair game, not matter the height. First, set up the table, then table side is rolled to determine turn to deploy. Everybody has a chance to get that side with best buildings. We found that when we setup, we try not to give an advantage to one table side, because your opponent may get the advantage you tried to setup for yourself.

We like to encourage people to use the 3D environment we have built so painstakingly, so we allow 8" from the edge at any level from the ground.

If the players have been foolish enough to set up the Lighthouse on the edge of the board(!) they deserve to get shot by the archers in it!

I don't know where it started in my old group, but we just placed markers (usually dice) at intervals a long the board to mark the deployment zone. Everything on within this boundaries was fair game regardless of height.
