Paint colors advice Empty
PostSubject: Paint colors advice   Paint colors advice Icon_minitimeThu 18 Jun 2009 - 21:17

I have found a guy that used to have a shop, and now it's closed and he's selling games-workshop paints for half the price.

As I am starting again from scratch (my old paint are not very good anymore) I can't decide which ones are absolutely necessary to have a good palette of colors.

This guy has GW's:
Washes
Foundation paints
Metal paints
Normal paints

Could you please name (in GW's paints names) the washes, paints and foundation you would recommend? I am planning on buying 15-20 between all kinds.

Thank you!

Buy the metallic paints. GW does the best metallic paints.

The Foundation set is mostly quite nice. Of the washes, black, red and mud are the best.

For the regular paints... bleh. There are a couple I like, but if I was going to buy 15-20 GW paints, I'd definately get the whole metallics line and the Foundations I like (if you like red, Mechrite red has really good coverage for red).

I recommend:

Normal
Chaos Black
Skull White
Codex Grey
Bleached Bone

Washes
Devlan Mud (a painter's best friend Wink )
Badab Black

Metallics
Boltgun Metal
Mithril Silver

With the rest, it's really hard to say, because it all depends on what you are planning to paint for now. If you want a warband with a red and green colour scheme, it's no use advising to buy a couple of shades of blue or yellow, nd so on. Some browns are always nice, though, as they are very useful for wood, leather, etc.

Thank you for your lists!

I will surely buy the metalic ones, the silver, boltgun and gold.

I'll also buy the washes you recommend.

As I don't quite know what I will be painting, I'll try to buy every possible colour (I mean, red, brown, black, white, green, yellow, blue... at least one of each).

I still don't get what's good about foundation, I keep reading you gotta thin your paint and do lots of passes... but with foundation it seems you need less passes...

If you try to paint red or yellow over a black undercoat, it's a pain, as you need several layers to get a coat which covers nicely so the undercoat (i.e. the black) does not show anymore. If you use Foundation paints, you need less layers (maximum 2 I think) to get a nice coverage. Also some of the foundation paints have a nice colour, too, so they are a good choice regardless of their special abilities).
