| Hi All, If you haven't heard of or don't have firefox, please download Firefox. It's a Safer and Faster Internet Browser, and its freaking awesome. Not to mention all of the add ons you can get that are freaking awesome. (I have an add on that blocks all advertisements, so they just don't show up. I also have a the weather forcast for my area at the bottom of my screen. It's 25 (F) and still snowing... I could look outside, but that would take to much energy ) Here's to a better Internet =) Ashton | |

| I have them both, but I work more with IE, just because i'm too lazy to look for it on my background, i only press the button on my keyboard, which opens IE, and I'm too lazy to change it. _________________ ..and by a roll of the dice you go under..

First: Firefox loads pages/websites faster. Second: Firefox is safer, and blocks more harmful viruses and attacks than other browsers. (If you know what Phishing is, Firefox will tell when you're on a Fishing site and pop up with a warning "This site is trying to steal your password: Click Here to Get Out of Here" How rad is that?) Third: Firefox has a huge community of programmers who have created millions of "extras" that you can add to your firefox. (For Example: If you're on myspace, you know how freaking annoying the Advertisements are. But I don't, cause I have an add on, that blocks all of them. I never see any advertisements! EVER!!!) And if you need another reason: HTML is a very precise language with very precise rules and regulations. Internet Explorer is supposed to follow these rules when reading and displaying your page. INTERNET EXPLORER DOESN'T FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE INTERNET! They made up a whole bunch of random "HTML Rules" that do not follow HTML, and they left out a lot of the HTML rules that it should have. As a website designer, After I have spent hours 5 hours making a website design in HTML, I have to spend another 1-2 hours trying to get it to work in Internet Explorer... Please help make the world a better place! Get Firefox! (I will also add: I am very pleased with so many members already having Firefox! )

Good question. And I only have one answer... The community. Firefox has a MUCH larger community of clients and open source programmers. Which ends up meaning that Firefox has many more add-ons, themes, etc. From a web standard View, I have heard that Opera is 100% valid HTML, CSS, etc. (which is debatable) and It has a lot of Awesome ideas that make it very rad. (not to mention they own opera.com =]) The only reason I use firefox is because it's the biggest Competitor to IE, who will one day rule supreme! (and if Opera started gaining headway over FF, I'd advertise that too.) I have both Installed on all of my computers. The point is that both Opera or Firefox is NOT INTERNET EXPLORER. And As long as you're not using IE, the world is a little bit happier. Thanks for the note Yorik. Happy Browsing, =]

| @ Thomas: Hmmm... doesn't sound like that was Firefox's fault to me. Sounds to me like you had all those nasty progs already on your PC from insufficient protection. Don't forget that a browser like FF or IE are not really supposed to guard you from Viruses and Trojans. An Antivirus software is. And only if you update it around 2x a day. So the malware you got on your PC was very probably NOT ushered in just because you installed Firefox. And Norton Antivirus is not a good antivirus software. I know, I know, it comes with windows... doesn't make it any safer though. Try the new Firefox 2. I am sure you'll like it And as an antivirus, Antivir (from Avira) is a good (free) alternative. Take care! _________________ | |

Yes, Ubuntu a version of Linux that's completely free (the O/S, the applications, everything), very stable, and is growing quite a following. Dell has even begun selling computers with it preloaded. You can read more about Ubuntu here, but here is their basic credo (from their web page): * Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates. * Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world. * Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer. * Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on. It comes in several flavors, including a desktop edition and a server edition. I use the desktop edition. Oh, and I think you can still download a "live cd" that lets you try out the operating system without even installing it. You just boot to your CD drive instead of your hard drive. Hope you give it a try!

| We also use Ubuntu at school, Firefox is the standard browser over there. At home and other PC's I made use of, all have Firefox. Why? Because, Firefox simply rocks your socks! (now that's a nice slogan.. ) | |

| Thanks for the explanation guys. ( I don't know why I didnt' respond when I read it a couple days ago... but better late than never)
That sounds freaking awesome. I've been trying to get away from Windows for a long long time, but I just don't seem to have the time.
I will make sure to come back to those links when I'm ready to do it.
Do you have any insider tips that would make it easier ?
thnx again | |

Not really any insider tips, though when you are ready, I can help you figure out how to partition your hard drive for the install. But I'd recommend starting out with the "live cd" first, to see if you even like it. I bet you will. Download it using Windows, burn it to a CD, and then boot to it. Ubuntu has the OpenOffice suite, so if you need a spreadsheet or word processor, it has those. They can read Microsoft Office files. Also, it has a finance tracking application called GnuCash, which I use instead of Quicken or Microsoft Money. GnuCash is actually kind of cool, in that it uses the double-entry system of accounting, which I had never used, but have grown to like. The other applications I use frequently are Firefox, Evolution (mail client), and Rhythmbox (music player), but there are many applications available. One of them is a fantasy game called Battle for Wesnoth that's kind of cool (and challenging), but it's a 2D game - not anything like World of Warcraft or other PC games. But all of it's free Also, it looks like you are a web developer, and I'm SURE there are lots of web development tools available. Still, there may be Windows programs you will still need/want, so you will probably want a dual boot (which is what I have). The main app I still need Windows for is iTunes (though Ubuntu has some support for the iPod, just not iTunes). If there any PC games you like, those too. If you do decide to install it, ping me and I'll tell you what I know. Just to make one thing clear, though: I am by no means any kind of Linux expert. I only switched to Ubuntu maybe 6 months ago, though I do love it!

| Thanks a bunch for your time Doug. That is very useful.
I have an old laptop that is slowing down a bit, and I don't even use any more, so I was thinking of reformatting it, and putting Ubuntu on it.
Thanks a bunch. (I'm all about Open Source.) I will definitely take you up on the Ping =)

Firefox 3.0 is freaking awesome. I didn't think it could get any better. Boy was I wrong.
You know the password memorizer? Now it lets you load the next page first (to see if your password was right) before forcing you to save it!
Not to mention the new address bar.

| FF for sure! problem is, I can't get msn to load my mail in it.. so I still need IE... sucks balls.. .
And on the new OS on my mac, FF refuses to work on login sites... (which limits my visiting of forums severely...
as to Ubuntu... not that enthousiastic about it... (a friend runs it, but he has problems with it, but now he can't uninstall it, and is basically screwed! )
Windows... not allways your friend, BUT, when it comes to media applications or webapplications, I deffinetaly prefer it over Mac ... (plus, I truly hate the way Apple manages to hype the sheep... ooooooh I need the new iPhone, ooooo I need a macbook, and then I will only work with Office for mac (which is crappy) just because I only need to handle texts and internet and music, but the mac looks soooooo good (and is sooooo much more expensive...) ... it makes me want to cry....
Professionally, I love the mac, (Graphic design etc.) as it is a bit more stable, and the shortkeys are better planned...

Have you tried FF3 on your Mac?
