| i am a noob looking for advice, asking the age old question "what warhammer army should i play?" i currently have 3 warhammer 40k armies, space orks, dark angels, and eldar. my favorite are the eldar because i like their statistics and tactics just a little information about your favorite army would be much appreciated -zulu p.s.not to sound rude, but im not too interested in your suggestion if you don't give me the reason why you suggested it, Moved to Fantasy section. | Welcome to the forums! In the old days I'd have told you that the best Warhammer armies for you would be Orcs and Goblins, High Elves or Dark Elves because the tactics and stats kind of overlapped. I don't play 40K but I doubt that that would be the case anymore. Warhammer has more variety in movement characteristics and special racial army rules. I collect and play many armies some of which even have army books. My favorites are Empire, Dogs of War and Orcs and Goblins. Empire and Dogs of War I like because of their historical inspiration. Fifteenth century Germans and Spanish have always been favorites of mine. The Empire also has fantastic inventions such as Steam Tanks and Helblaster Volley Guns. Great Cannon are also a favorite. Big guns that smash your foes are wonderful things! I like Dogs of War because they allow a little of everything, but mainly I like the pike. And Ogres, I like ogres, too. Orcs and Goblins are my first army. I collected them because of the Lord of the Rings even though the Warhammer orcs are not really much like the Tolkein variety. Warhammer orcs are a combination of absurd silliness and raw killing power. The only army that regularly used to fight itself. Those days are gone as well, now they just stand around part of the time and kill the enemy between unscheduled breaks. I like beastmen because of their fierce raiders of the dark forest image. Skaven because they will gladly shoot, burn or electrocute each other as well as the enemy. Tomb kings because of Ancient Egypt and Mummies. Vampire Counts because they get vampires and zombies. Bretonnians because of the Legend of Arthur. Lizardmen are sort of based on frogs, dinosaurs and aztecs (what's not to love?). Ogre Kingdoms (see above). I don't play any elven armies, I've only painted 3 dwarfs and Warriors of Chaos and Deamons make me sad because they ruin campaigns. Do you play Mordheim? Which warband do you like? Some warbands correspond to Warhammer armies as well... hope that helps, js | |

| Hi Zulu: I think you should post this in the "Fantasy Wargames" section of the forum. This section is for MORDHEIM rules discussion. Not to be rude, but please check the best place to post your threads. Period. Anyhow, as you already have ORKS you can consider that for fantasy. But bear in mind that in WHFB there exists the "animosity" rule, that make them a little difficult to use. The good part is that with the boxed set BFSP you got tons of gobbos to start, including a hero, a shaman and a troll. With a batallion, you're pretty much ready to go. Cons are that all war machines are mewtal and very expensive. --------------------- OTOH, if you like eldar's discipline, High Elves may be your thing. They are elite troops with high WS, BS, I and Ld. They are fun to paint and with 2 battalions you'll have a pretty good force to start with. --------------------- Chaos is a little difficult to play too, because they practically don't have missile troops, and must charge as soon as possible to HTH. Moreover, you'll have to choose one of the 4 gods or absolute chaos if you want a themed army, and if you make the wrong decision at the start that can be very costly in time and money. The good thing is that most models are very expensive in points, so with few models you'll have a decent army. -------------------- Other option is dwarves, as they are included too in the box of BFSP, they are though as nails, have a high magic resistance, and with 2 or 3 BFSP (cheaper than battallions, and you can offer the gobbos to other players to keep cost low), will have a good starting force. Dwarves don't have cavalry and that can be a drawback, but that too can mean you can convert almost any troop type with a regiment box set (longbeards, rangers, etc.) and so your entire army will be plastic, lightweight and perfectly "official". Hope that helps. | |

| Welcome Zulu, Me, I'm a High Elf player myself. My main reason for choosing them when I got into the hobby was mainly because of their looks. The High Elves are row after row and regal-looking soldiers. Also, the fluff was a big factor too. I find their history interesting and rich. I began collecting them in 6th edition, but enjoy them all the more here in the 7th edition. The number of units, added to increase in special/rare slots allowed them makes for a very diverse army as well. I don't win all my games, by far, but I certainly enjoy all of them. Also, with the release of the 7th edition, some amazing sculpts came out for them: lion chariot, dragon, noble on foot/mounted. These are some of the nicest sculpts (in my opinion) that GW has put out and building/painting them was a treat. | |

| My favourite is Empire. The detachment system is great, the variety massive, and the fluff and freedom to make your army personal is a huge boon. | |

| WOOD ELVES!*Ahem* Sorry. Have you considered Wood Elves my good man? While I agree that high Elves are one the coolest looking armies in theory, I find their models (other than the super cool looking Heroes and the excellent chariot) rather clumsy. The spearmen's lack of elegance is only surpassed by that of their Dark Elf counterparts. If you look at the amazing artwork in the High Elf Codex, you'll be disappointed by the looks of your troops in real life. The minute GW brings out High Elves that look like HIGH-ELVES, I will rush to buy that Battalion box. But fear not! There is another Elven Army that is tactically challenging and rewarding to play, and that boasts excellent minis if you are into cloaked rangers that blend into their surroundings, walking trees and guerilla tactics. I like LOVE wood elves mainly because of the theme. I think the whole dark enchanted Forest, living in symbiosis with it, casting spells to make trees walk around and shapeshifting into wolves and birds thingy is just awesome. Add to that all those minor forest spirits (Spites) either malignant or kind and you have the stuff that children's dreams are made of... well, at least MY daydreams were made of this, but maybe that's because I come from an alpine country. Wood Elf Pros: - Look cool - Fast - Extremely good at ranged infantry combat - Versatile tactics (MANY ways to build/theme your army). - HUGE selection of different troops. - One of the most beautiful codexes with all new artwork (not like that rip-off Dark Elf codex I bought). - One of the armies with most special rules (which seems like a con at first, but really makes it sooo much more replayable and enjoyable). The army is extremely customisable. - Not very popular (for inexplicable reasons), thus making it something a little more special (everyone plays Chaos or Empire... boooooring! ) Wood Elf Cons: - Very very very thin armour - Unforgiving. You better think of every move you make twice. A slight miscalculation can change a crushing victory into a terrible defeat. But you will get used to that. Wood Elves are a very strong army when played correctly. _________________ | |

| Yarr, but I have to agree with Tom about the High Elf spearmen. Ugh, they are not the finest looking of my troops. But all painted up, you hardly notice the blocky hands, flat faces, and stature of an innatimate carbon rod. Yeah, the popularity of Wood Elves has dimished around here as well, it's all about the lates and greatest. Even VCs and WoC are making way for the new '09 Lizzies. Lizardmen are the new black! Now, excuse me while I go off to bake my own damn cookies! | |

| DARK ELVES!
If all of the Elves were named here, so I suppose you should also consider a Druchii army. I have an army of them myself and I think they rock!!! However, since you are the one who wants to play and is new to warhammer fantasy battle world, you should take your time to think. I personaly would suggest to take a close look at the miniatures - all of them! not just heroes and some cool things, but compare entire armies. If you like the look of the slayer regiment and a stone thrower and while looking at it you think 'hmmm, I could do some nice damage with them' pick Dwarfs, or you can hear a loud WAAAAAGH! in your head when you look at Orcs, pick them. Photos of all the models could be found on GW website. You shouldn't be asking people what to choose - choose yourself! You are the one who's going to paint that army, and you're going to play with it, so you shouldn't leave the decision for someone else....
Best of look | |

| NIGHT GOBLINS ARE THE WAY & THE LIGHT! My Band of Drug Crazed Psychos ARE SO intimidating that they've NEVER found an opponent to face them...on second thought, maybe you MIGHT want to go with some other army, if you'd like to ACTUALLY play a game . | |

You WOULDN'T believe JUST how much Fungus I have in the army, well...YOU might, but nobody else would. I have Mushroom [2" to 4" high] on all the bases, with the Night Goblins perched on some, hiding behind others. I think the whole thing was a '60s flashback thing, Man. | |
