| Role-playing and board games are deeply imbedded in my family (My mum recently got hold of some of the board games she played with her brother and parents as a kid: they were caller Sorceror's Cave (a sort of role playing game on tiles) and Mystic Wood (more of a combat game on tiles). Here's my list: Outrage: great game, and desrespectful to the queen - always a good sign. http://www.boardgamecompany.co.uk/Outrage(JD1).htm Mystic wood: a great game for teaching kids how to play Mordheim when they're older: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1152 Sorcerer's cave: basically another gateway game, it teaches kids how to play DnD when they're older. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/1202 ScrabbleShips: never played it, and saw Homer and Bart playing it in the Simpsons once ('this game makes no sense!' Lisa Simpson), but it looks fun! Plague Doctor: a board game that only exists in my mind, plague doctors (the players) have to race around the board treating those infected with Black Death, while avoiding getting infected. | |

| Munchkin great mad game in which one can really harass others with weird ass weaponry and monsters Vroeger of Later (dutch) Dutch history made into a game, in a great way (I just love history, and this is a great way of learning more of my own -truly obscure facts are hidden in this game) Catan still great with friends who are not too much into gaming, but like a game night... Risk Remains a great one... hurray for 6 hours of world domination! | |

| Risk's great, can never perusade people to play with me though (this could be because my friends are either gamers, who'd rather play a tabletop game, or non-gamers, who don't like 6-hour board games. Or it could be that I'm a wildly vindictive player who enjoys taking terrirories just to upset my opponent's tactics.). | |

| If you like Risk you should try Risk 2052 AD (or something...Lets just call it future risk) I love this version, and because there is a turn limit (wich sound dull but makes the game so much cooler) you can always finish a game in about 2 to 3 hours. | |

| Err it's not a wargame or an RPG but my favourite boardgame is Articulate, it's a game where you have to describe words to your teammate(s), so much fun! | |

| No worries, I wanted your list of fav board games no matter the mechanics from dominos (which I love) to Cranium to Tannhauser. Thanks all, this is turning in to quite a list for me to check out the next time I'm down at my LGS. | |

| In no particular order:
Arkham Horror (already been mentioned)
Puerto Rico
Ticket To Ride (I've played most versions, and probably prefer the Märklin one).
Thurn und Taxis
Power Grid
Advanced Civilization (haven't played it for a long time, but played it all the time when I was a teenager)

| Khet: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16991Amazing board game. It's similar to chess in that you have pieces with set movement on a grid. The difference is that each piece has mirrors, and after each turn a (real) laser is fired, reflects off the mirrors, and any piece it touches on a non-mirrored surface is killed. Objective is still to kill the king. Blokus: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2453Geometric game where you try to place all your pieces while blocking off your opponents. Bang: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3955Card game set in the old west. Each player is given a secret role (deputy, sheriff, outlaw, renegade), with varying victory conditions. It's an (often hilarious) shoot 'em up to victory. Settlers of Catan Heroquest There's a new version of Risk out with objective victories. It's actually very well done (unlike many of the previous tweaks added to Risk), and I've played two very good games with it which were exciting yet only lasted 2-2.5 hours. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37198 | |

| Space Hulk! It's no longer available, of course, but I really do believe it was GW's finest hour...
Let's see...Dark Future is also fun (although also no longer available), and I like Arkham Horror too. Oh, Colosseum is a LOT of fun, and I definitely recommend it. Settlers of Catan and Carcasonne, are, of course, a must-have for any serious (or humorous!) boardgamer.
The Munchkin games are fun too - one of the few games I ever actually win!

| No one's mentioned A game of Thrones yet... Based on my favourite books, by George RR Martin. It has both strategy and diplomacy elements and is quite fun to play. | |

| Thanks for that, Duredhel. I've never played the game myself, but I love the books. Tends to be a little pricy where I shop so I've held off getting thus far. Good to know someone's enjoying it. | |

| Ethlorien, the game really captures the atmosphere of the books, in my opinion. If you play it, try playing with the first expansion (6 players is a must...). | |

| Cool - I'll definately consider it. Every Friday we have friends over to play boardgames (sadly, none of 'em are into Mordheim), so we do pick upthe odd game here and there to add to our games. | |

| Trivial Pursuit! The game where you need to know the guiness records book by hearth/be super lucky to win! Random trivia: It was invented by french-canadians Settlers of course (I have all the expension of the previous edition, the new one is just a revamp, right?) Chess! Simple at the first glance, still super fun and never quite mastered. Risk: lets game through the game. For some reasons, it alway end up as the world vs. that guy who took over australia at the begining and has been building up a 100 guy army ever since in Indonesia. And I think that bloodbowl and space hulk don't qualify since they require some hobbying and extensive rules only found in tabletop game. Also there is no such thing as evolution in between the games in boardgames. | |
