PostSubject: D&D campaign based in the warcraft setting...   D&D campaign based in the warcraft setting... Icon_minitimeWed 22 Oct 2008 - 20:28

...so I've recently joined a gaming group and we've started up what is, for me, my first D&D campaign. I've played a couple of one-off games before but this is the first long running thing I'll be a part of!
In the first session a horde* religious festival that we were all attending (or, in my case, just happened to be at since it was in my home town) got interrupted by a massive earthquake followed by an invasion by corrupted earth elementals. After dealing with the elementals we went to investigate the earthquake and it turned out to be the result of a massive (talking about a mile tall here) rock that had just fallen out of a portal that had briefly opened in the sky. The magic users in our team investigated it and they worked out that, not only was it from another plane, it was entirely devoid of magic.
Our group consists of
-A blood elf** paladin of the light
-A blood elf** priest (cleric) who seems more interested in the dark arts than a priest should be!!!
-A tauren*** warrior
-A forsaken undead**** warlock
-A goblin***** rogue (me!!!)
We're trying our best to RP our characters in a convincing way, my character was raised as a tinker/mechanic but was entirely useless at it so he left home, I've decided that he's a complete nihilist who cares about nothing but money (and even that he's just latched onto because he can't find anything else worth latching onto!). It's a pretty interesting role to play but quite hard to integrate into the party, I'm thinking he might be susceptible to latching on to whatever religion/ideology comes his way which could prove to provide an interesting dynamic given the other characters in the party.
I know some of you might not be familiar with the warcraft/WoW setting so here are the footnotes to the asterisks:
* the horde are the enemy of the alliance****** and consist of the more bestial/not good races i.e. orcs, trolls, tauren, blood elves and forsaken undead. It's not a clear cut good/evil dynamic as it is in other settings
**blood elves used to be high elves, I'm not entirely sure of their history but something happened to them that made them turn a little bit evil (I think!)
***tauren-think big shamanistic, cow people that are a lot like native Americans
****don't know much about the forsaken undead but they're basically sentient zombies fighting against a really evil group of undead called the burning legion
*****goblins (in this setting) are intelligent and independent, generally tinkers and merchants
******the alliance are the more ordered/good races i.e. humans, dwarves, gnomes, night elves (look like the drow but act like wood elves) and the draenei (blue aliens!)

I'm sure there are other people on this forum that know a lot more about this setting than I do! There's also info here

I don't actually play WoW anymore, only lasted a month but it was eating away too much of my time, I tend to get obsessed with things fairly easily and the only way I then have for them not to dominate my life is just to give up! DnD suits me fine because I can only really do it once a week when we have our meets (apart from all the time I spend in the meantime thinking about how my character might develop!)

Well, your campaign sounds fun anyway. Love the Tauren. Good excuse to use the Minotaur rules at the back of the MM.

My two campaigns are actually pretty generic right now (just easing some new players inot the game). But as I'm a big WoW as it is, I might just have to steal your ideas for the next campaign sometime.

Funny you should write this, as a few weeks ago I read a letter online by James Wyatt (the lead developper guy for DnD 4th ed) talking about how he also is running a DnD campaign with his son in the world of Azeroth too. His son's a Drenai Paladin, he wrote.

Who knows, perhaps someday they will collaberate and put out a campaign guide for WoW with the d20 rules set... or not.

There is a set of d20 warcraft rules! That's what we're using Smile I downloaded mine but the DM bought the books Very Happy We haven't used minis yet, the first session was just setting the scene I think it's more about the gameplay than the minis in this campaign anyway but I might make a rogueish looking gobbo if I get the time (and get round to buying one!).

I have 2 accounts remaining from my origional 4 Mad

1's got a L70 female tauren druid in 4/5 season 3,
1's got a L70 female tauren warrior in the blue set with honor saved up, she was going to be pushed for full s3 since my main warrior had all his, mean i'd have a sword spec and mace spec warrior for fun, and could also have the two main pvp specs so I could swap around each game.

its from my days of multiboxing/mass pvp.

Gave my main account L70 male tauren warrior (My origional character who holds the sexy title of high warlord, and had full season 3) has been given away already.

MMO's are too big a time sink Razz

As you can see i'm a pvp addict.

Maybe he/you could obsessively collect various & sundry religious medallions, JUST IN CASE! Suspect

Yes, an update would be great!

I just recently picked up for myself the Manual of the Planes, Adventurer's Vault, Martial Power, and the Forgotten Realm Player's Book. But reading through them, and my obsession with WoW to begin with, has got me thinking of starting a new campaign. Please, let me know how it's going!

Thanks for asking! The campaign's been on a month long hiatus as we're a university gaming group so we've all been on Christmas holidays! It's all getting very exciting though, we're pretty close to discovering what the cause of the big rock falling out of the sky is, as far as we can tell it's something to do with the hound of Sargeras AKA the eye of the universe that is something that until recently was thought to be a star. It turns out it's some sort of massive malignant entity that ate a planet and spat it out a big chunk of it at us and is now heading towards the planet we're on! We've also been joined by an orc warlock NPC who we're learning more and more about, it seems as though he might have some daemonic blood (he's completely clueless about his heritage though, we're doing investigations behind his back). I've started to integrate my character into the party, he's starting to warm to them but also getting a hefty wage! I'm like four times richer than any of the other characters! (I'm just trying to keep in character).
Unfortunately we lost our undead warlock as the player is too busy but we haven't noticed his abcence too much.
I'm going to take a couple of levels in warlock at some point but I want to keep it within character, luckily the NPC warlock is an orphan so I think our characters will be able o relate on that level, the problem with that is that he doesn't really understand his powers, I don't know how much of a good teacher he'll be...
oh and they do do WoW minis but they're prepainted unfortunately.

Wow, sounds like a great adventure!

I've seen those WoW minis, and I must say - as far as pre-paints go I like them a lot better then any of the Reaper or Rackham pre-paints thus far.

Cool - keep us posted. Smile
