The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal Empty
PostSubject: The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal   The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal Icon_minitimeFri 11 Apr 2014 - 20:03

East of the gulf of Medes, the oasis of El Marhal has long served Imperial traders from Sudenburg traveling to the southern reaches of the World Edges Mountains in search of gold. Recently, the ever shifting Great Sandy Desert has revealed the long concealed ruins of a city. The superstitious Arabyan guides quickly recalled stories of the lost Al Shewdin, a Nehekharan outpost. Unsurprisingly, fortune seekers and cut-throats from Sudenburg quickly took to the desert...

I've just started working on a new board, deliberately limiting myself to the Arcane Ruins, the 40k 3rd ed. Jungle Trees and the usual foam and foam board. Here are the results of the first couple of weeks of work Smile

The Temple of Shemlek (Magic Circle)
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0297
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0298

The Gate of Mahalik (Sorcerous Portal)
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0299
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0300

The Obelisk of Tahaluk (Way or Bane Stone)
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0257
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0258

The idea is to use some of the Fantasy special effect terrains to guide me in the development of a multi-purpose board.

That does look to have a considerable amount of potential cool...the Obelisk is already VERY COOL. I hope you have as much FUN making it as we will watching it develop.   What a Face

This time, to add a bit of colour I went for alternating tiles.

The Palace of Ramehelik, east wing (Acropolis of Heroes)
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0371
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0372

The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0374
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0375

I'll never do it again! I was unable to focus distant objects for an hour or so after I finished it Rolling Eyes

I'm with Fat Rat on this: that is REALLY COOL! The tilled floors look TERRIFIC with the Evil Temple bits. AND the color selection & brushwork are EXCEPTIONAL. It brings to mind for some reason or other From Dusk till Dawn. VERY WELL DONE!   thumbsup

Reminds of From dusk till Dawn...because of this, perhaps?

Unintenionally, but it's almost the same sand colour.
And I think there were bas-relief skulls on the walls of the Titty Twister Bar.

I think it's the view of the brothel on top of the Aztec Ziggurat at the end of the film that did it.

We all know how life gets in the way of the really important stuff, but I haven't left this project Smile

The Palace of Ramehelik, north wing (no point giving it 8th ed. rules now that AoS is upon us)
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0847
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0848
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0849
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0850
The Ruins of Al Shewdin and the oasis of El Marhal DSCN0851

I kept the tile work pattern simple this time, for the sake of my poor ol' eyes Wink

Real life is obviously a diabolic invention that interferes with "making a joyful sound". That aside, the Royal Ruins did turn out SPLENDIDLY; I love the stairs. VERY NICELY DONE!   thumbsup

Indeed, Warboss Kurgan Wink
Let me get the entire city done and we'll have a new campaign there.
I have plans for a ziqqurat, an arcane ruin, another portal and some trees for the actual oasis Smile

Why not? I have used the 6th edition terrain chart since it came out. It is a fine resource for themed games.

Well, just because with Warboss Kurgan and a few others here in Manchester we really got the AoS bug, so we're no longer playing 8th ed.. Anyway, the original plan was to use it as an Haunted Mansion Wink
