The Black Hats - a marienburg warband

Hi this will be the plog of my first mordheim warband.

One thing I love about this game is thar your band is made up of individuals, and I find great joy in coming up with back stories for my characters.

First some words about the gang itself. The are the personal guard force of a wealthy merchant called Helmut Händler. They call themself the Black Hats after the black hats that are their signum. The merchant is based in marienburg but I will not use the marienburg color scheme.

When Helmut heard about Mordheim he saw an opportunity to add more wealth to his allready fat treasure chest and gave his Chief Guard Captain, Franz Jäger the task to hire some more men and depart for mordheim.

I knew i wanted to use purple as a dominant color in my band as it implies wealth and then I just chose color that went good with it.

Here's the first painted minature. Helmut Händler himself. I love this model. He looks so pompous!
He will probably never be on the battlefield himself. That's what he got his guards for. But you never know.



Here's the first actual addition to my warband. The mercenary ogre Jürgen. He has been part of the guard force some time and his imposing stature can be very handy in trading negotiations. Kapten Franz thought it would be a good idea to bring Jürgens extra muscle power to the city of murder.





Next up is putting together my characters and the rest of the band.

The overall painting job is good. Some criticism: Since Helmut is rich, I wouldnt drybrush his belly, it looks like cheap clothing now. The oger is somewhat too shiny, varnished? Maybe it's only because of the camera.. whatever. Good job anyway!

It' s the new washes that give of that shine. I'm giving the ogre a dull coat varnish to bring down the shinyness. I agree with the belly of helmut. I shall go over him and give his purple a deeper richer quality.

That is a FINE start to a potentially VERY COOL War Band. The brushwork, particularly the flesh tones, & basing are TERRIFIC. Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Wow , love the background,; reading # 2 Marienburg novel Massacre in Marienburg, and i think you´ve found the Black cap, hat thing somewhere in those novels......., , like it! And the way you highlight looks great, the face and skin on the ogre in particular! Thumbs up!

You could use the Merchent Hired Sword for your Merchent or have him be one of your Young Bloods.
Another option is get the BtB supplament and make this a Merchent Caravan... The leader is a Merchent and you will get to build a wagon or two. I think fluff wise this will fit a lot better.

Thanks alot guys! I took special care with the ogres skin. I brought out my old wet palette and really worked with blending highlights. Since this is such a small project I want to raise my bar painting wise.
Actually the black cap/ hat idea was something that came up when I painted the merchant. The black just worked and voila, the black hats were born!

I read the merchant list I must say that it's very tempting. But since I'm new to mordheim I want to start with something more vanilla before I go into the more exprimental stuff. But I had forgot about the merchant hired sword. That's a great idea. Will definietly include him in the list! Thanks
