Scenery a la Me

Hey,

I'm something of a Little Men collector based in Bournemouth with my main focus as a long-running Warhammer map campaign.

My friend Joao suggested I post some pictures of my latest scenery projects for you guys.

It's good to see you're still with us, timplanet. You're Gothic Horror style is a favorite with moi; there's an underlying eerie quality to the pieces that provides a tangible sense of unease. GREAT STUFF; VERY WELL DONE!

I have to say that the Sylvanian Gothic Horror theme you have going on here is among my favourite settings too! I love what you have done with the GW kits!

It looks terrific! What kind of fabric do you use as ground level, it looks so alive, great movements on it! Thumbs up!

Amazing table really, the vegetation too looks great!

My wife brought herself the hard-foam graveyard you have used in the 2nd pic down, and its been sat on the shelf since before I met her (8 years now) while we figure out what to do with it.

I am totally digging this set-up... a nightmarish moorland. Lots of inventive touches and some fantastic use of the Warhammer terrain sets.

Really hope that yourself & Joao cross paths with myself, geekgirl & frogprince at some point.

I'm really trying to push the interesting scenery angle in my Warhammer campaign (as well as having a lot more story-based scenarios).

Tim, the new scenery (which you've managed to paint super fast) looks great! Can you remind me which colours you used for the stonework?

Sure. It was just all the greys from Adeptus Battlegrey to Codex to Fortress.

whoah! Your Scullvane manse looks so cool! These are also the first non-gw photo's I see of it and they really show off it's potential! You should model the inside of the dome so you can fight mordheim games in it!

Well, because I'm more of a hobbyist than a player, I might be the one with the camera, capturing the highlights and great scenery.

Actually, I was quite surprised with how thin the whole piece is... Looks great, though.

I've got to ask though.. just HOW did you do the basic surface of your gaming table? It's gorgeous... and I want to take... inspiration(*).... from your board @)

The board was made from a huge piece of towelling (£25 pounds from a fabric shop and worth every penny twice over). I dyed it black, then used a sequence of different paint I bought from B&Q to paint as an overlapping drybrush. The colours pretty much matched the GW colours: Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, Bubonic Brown and Bleached Bone.

I use the same colours on all my bases of course.

It’s the most useful thing I’ve ever made and laying books underneath it makes it as hilly as you like.

Ingenious! I was going to post something like, "dude is that a towel you've gone and painted!?" but I figured it would all come out in the wash - *ba-dum*

I'd be curious to know whether you drew 'material' inspiration from anywhere/anyone before committing to such a dastardly scheme?

Well what may have got the wheels turning was about seven
years before I did it I saw a White Dwarf battle report where someone had
planted irregular shapes of material on their war board of long-threaded
material, similar to long grass.


Basically the grass sheet REALLY wasn’t doing it for me as
it wasn’t realistic to have such a large expanse of perfectly same-coloured
lawn. At the same time I deliberated for literally years what colour to end up
with. I’d experimented with snow boards (but hated the join lines and flatness)
and grey cobble wallpaper boards for Mordheim and flat desert wallpaper boards.



I needed something that would cover it all, would provide
variation and be able to flow over piled up books for hills. And I wanted it to
look like a variety of surfaces, depending on the context (so it makes a good
town surface too.


Here’s some more pictures, showing, my snow blanket (made
using similar principles), and the way the blanket looks on streets.
