145 new Citadel Paints Empty
PostSubject: 145 new Citadel Paints   145 new Citadel Paints Icon_minitimeThu 29 Mar 2012 - 21:03

I just saw on Games Workshop's web-page. The old colors are gone and have been replaced with 145 new ones (though some of them look the same, apparently the formula is new...). I'm looking forward to test some of the new colors and effects (especially dry compounds and the glazes), but overall I'm just... overwhelmed, I guess. Thoughts?

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1560002a

"Citadel Base paints are high quality acrylic paints specially formulated for basecoating your Citadel miniatures quickly and easily. They are designed to give a smooth matte finish over black or white undercoats with a single layer."

"Citadel Shades are specially formulated to flow over other paints and into the recesses on your miniatures, defining details and accentuating recesses. Once applied, they dry to provide a very effective, matte shading for your models."

"Citadel Layer paints are high quality acrylic paints, and with 70 of them in the Citadel Paint range, you have a huge range of colours and tones to choose from when you paint your miniatures. They are designed to be used straight over Citadel Base paints (and each other) without any mixing. By using several layers you can create a rich, natural finish on your models that looks fantastic on the battlefield."

"Citadel Dry Compounds are of a thicker consistency than other Citadel paints, which makes them perfect for drybrushing - a handy way to pick out the details on a model, or apply highlights swiftly and easily."

"Citadel Glazes can be used to intensify colour, allowing you to emphasise the strong colours on a model. With a similar consistency to a Shade, they provide a translucent layer across the colours beneath them that augments the original colour with a new hue. They are also useful for restoring colour to an area that might have been over-highlighted."

"Citadel Texture paints are designed to provide a swift, effective solution to detailing your bases. They contain a mixture of both coarse and fine grit, which forms a rough, grainy surface that is ideal for drybrushing and ready for further detailing. They give strong, effective coverage over both black and white undercoats."

"Citadel Technical paints encompass four specialist formulas that have each been designed to perform a specific painting or modelling role."

I'll definitely give some of the new paints a go. Also, I'll be interested in checking some of the skin colours which might help me with highlighting and giving human faces a more realistic look.

Getting all 145 new paints in one go is another story. I have no money or space for that whole bunch to invade what's left of my workshop! Wink

I considered buying the old one, but with that at least you saved money. The "free figure case" is just not enough considered the amount of paints I'll never use...

That's right. Or the amount of extra paints you'll always need for some colours. I'm a high consumer of scorched brown and tausept ochre, for example. Smile

Also, there are other companies I would like to try like Vallejo. I've heard really good things and seen stunning results from them.

I look forward to try out some of the new paints, however ill never forgive them for removing the "classic" names. I mean, for how meny years did we have "Skull White", "Chaos Black", "Blood Red", Red Gore, "Sunburst Yellow" or "Chainmail", just to name a few?

... And also the new design on the bottles is ugly.

Now these bottles where cool! and the best part is, they still work. The paint doesnt dry up like it does in all newer GW containers

I'm a Vallejo man so these changes bothers me not - I've had too many bad experiences with drying Citadel paints, I know you can usually rectify it with a bit of mixing but its just a pain - plus Vallejo are cheap and I prefer the texture.

i think it's another peice of bad marketing, (edit: because it gives all citadel paint users a perfect excuse to try something else) but in this economy bad marketing seems to be what works best.

There can only be one reason: the real consumers are (mostly) just plain dumb, and they dont post in these forums.

1) If you push this reasoning further ... the REAL consummers are the people who make money. 2) According to our society's stndards the people with money are "successful" winners 3) if "BAD" marketing works so well it means consumers are dumb = people who make money are dumb = successful people are dumb

conclusion: we're living in a society where beeing stupid is an advantage.

To all the successful people in this forum reading this, dont take it personal. it's just a vast generalisation which should not include everyone, and is written by a bitter boy who cant find his place in it.

Haha, izmerul, you are forgetting that a lot of Western economies are living on a credit bubble (not only government one), and the main customer base is rather the average Joe, so I suppose:
1) a lot of dumb people are not even successful
2) given that GW sells loads of stuff to little kids with rich parents, where the kids are perhaps dumb or just greedy and the parents don't care how much money they spend, it might as well be this group that cannot even make it's own financial decisions that will spend a lot of money on the new paints Wink

Anyway, I am not exactly that hyped about their new colours... I mean, what they did with foundation paints and the washes was great, so they could have in my opinion just discontinued some more paints they didn't sell and add the new ones and improve the formula of the old ones. When I get back home to my paints, I bet half of them are not useable any more and now I have to get a guide to the new paints to see which of the fancy names match the old colours so I can finish my warbands with the same colours...

Gotta admit, some of the classic names were brilliant, remember "Titillating Pink"? xD

I still have paints from 10-15 years ago, so I don't really see myself using the new ones any time soon...I also don't like the blatant money grabbing of the whole "ready straight out the bottle" concept.

Sure it sounds good on paper "Hey I can just use these paints neat without having to water it down or prime it or anything." But in practice that translates to "Aw crap...this stuff is just pre-watered down...so I am basically paying the same price or more for about 30% less paint" -.-'

Seems to me like the whole new range is tailored to an almost 3D "Paint by Numbers" approach to appeal to the kids, which is fair play I guess since that's GWs cash cow at this stage, but I think I'll pass ^^

of course i'm forgeting a lot of things ^^, and to be fair wasnt really thinking about GW while i was writting this Razz

but there are nonetheless trends and it would be interesting to have some numbers to crunch: are there more players playing smaller scale games like Mordheim here and at the same time more people with MASSIVE apocalypse scale (usually unpainted) armies and a gap forming in the middle?

the amount of money spent by players owning huge amounts of minis might well hide a relative lack of new players (or even decrease?)

i dont have the numbers ... it would be interesting to see, if it really is the "average Joe" still driving the game.

Mutate: another example would be if Toyota's customer base decreased but their faithfull customers only buy the biggest model and so their income is stil growing

Judging from the experience I gathered of dropping by at some GW stores now and then, there is still a lot of kids getting new into the hobby and buying things... not sure, however, how long their attention span and dedication to the hobby is, compared to a lot of the people here who have been in the hobby for decades.

When I saw this I was pissing and moaning like the rest of you dorks, then I actually went down and had a look at it myself, these paints are actually pretty good, the Base colours are a reworking of the foundation paints and they're so much better, they have a white that has a one coat coverage over black, ONE COAT COVERAGE WITH WHITE OVER BLACK!, the new washes flow much better than before, the glazes are poretty nice but I've never worked with glazes before so I can't really comment on what makes them any different from other brands, texture paints are quite nice, and will make my muddy tank tracks so much easier to do.

I feel the total name changes are silly and unneeded, they did it as a copywrite issue as they're making these paints in house, no more 3rd party manufactoring(we'll see about that) and so as I could gleen from the staff at my local store the price will stay the same, weather that turns out to be true is another thing.

Yes their dedication definitly is an issue, because GW is thinking short term now (like the rest of the world). It reminds me of a comment from a long time gamer in Under Empire who noted that when he goes for a game at his local GW (which now allows playing with unpainted troops) the kids he plays against look at his army like they've never seen a fully painted 2000 points before ...

the new paints might help them paint them, but then they should have just done a speedpainting box with dry, glazes and even add a Dip for the kids.

No need to scan pages, here is a handy chart which will help you convert your old paint range to the new one, or if you desire a new company's brand: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

Looking at this chart is is quite obvious GW wanted to change all the names to make it harder for people to use Vallejo paints. They are all names with trademarked words now, such as Wazdakka Red and Dawnstone. Can they really trademark the Abbadon in Abbadon Black? That's biblical...

At least i now know my beloved Devlan mud is now called Agrax Earthshade ... makes me sick! blarghhh 145 new Citadel Paints 120792

They also made this guide, though i doubt it is any good for anyone who have seen a brush before. Havent looked it over yet but i like to mix my own colors Smile Citadel Painting guides

A lot of these they already had like Base sound like Foundations.

The Glazes they had back in the day with the same looking bottles, they were like inks, but they worked a little different.

The Shade ones sound like Ink/Washes.

Layer sounds like Traditional Paint.

The Dry Compound, Texture and Technical actually sound new.

I think it is something they do every so often to keep their paint lines seeming "Fresh". We will see. My paints are a mix of Vallejo, GW and paints from my Local Art Store. So it is always cool to get new paints if they are useful. I think that the textures could be cool for tanks, bases and vehicles.
